Double Page Spread Analysis

Page 2: Double page spread analysis

• The Vaccines are an English ‘indie-rock’ band. In this double page spread, the first thing you notice is the band, as the image of them is so large and spills over the two pages. The colours that have been used across the pages are browns, blues and blacks, all with a sepia filter on them. This has the effect of the pages being a bit old. The Vaccines don’t particularly play “21st century” music, they’d be more described as playing older music with their own twist, so this could be a reason for the colour scheme. The text is along the right hand side of the pages and the fonts that have been used are all the same. The target audience for this would firstly be for fans of The Vaccines, but secondly for fans of ‘indie’ music, this would be instantly recognisable because of the image and text. The shot of the band that has been used is a medium shot. I believe that this shot has been used on this particular occasion because it is a band. It shows all of the members, their clothes and postures.

• In this double page spread, Jamie T is shown sitting on a wooden bench in a garden. The image shows us a lot of what we already know about Jamie T. He is wearing ripped jeans and faded trainers, showing us of his laid back and chilled personality. His effortless face also reflects his thoughts on the world, which he portrays in his songs. The colours used on these pages consist of red, white, blue and black. The red, white and blue colours are the colours of the British flag. These have been used because Jamie T is from London and is evidently English in his voice, lifestyle and opinions. The fonts that have been used are varied. From the “Bard of” writing being a fancy font, to the “Battered Britain” being different sized and stand out letters. This could be a contrast of what people think of the English, being posh and well presented, to what they really are, scruffy and bold. The audience for these pages would have to be people that know of and like Jamie T, as people either have never heard of him, or love him. I feel like this double page spread is very effective and does exactly what it is intending to do, which is to sum up Jamie T.

• This double page spread shows Miles Kane and Alex Turner, best known from being the lead man in the Arctic Monkeys, together they are The Last Shadow Puppets. The first thing you notice about this spread is the masthead “Best Of Both Worlds”. The masthead implies that as Miles Kane, from a popular band at the time called The Rascals, and Alex Turner from the Arctic Monkeys, were together it makes a ideal duo. The whole page is presented in black and white, apart from part of the masthead and the names in the text. The text that isn’t in black and white is a dark orange colour could relate to the brick wall they are standing in front of which relates to both their style of music their rural dress sense. The text is centred in the middle of the two pages, with the two main men separated. The reasons that the text could be separating them and not showing them together is because they quite simply, aren’t together, they both belong to different bands. The image shows both men in a medium shot. Miles Kane is shown smiling at the camera, this could be showing that he’s more of an open and honest man than Alex Turner, who is shown facing away from the camera, which shows that he’s “not bothered”, going with his personality. The target audience is quite broad, as it reaches out to both Rascals and Monkeys fans, who despite having similar styles of music, have a different fan base.

• The very first things you notice about this in particular double page spread are “Noel Gallagher” in large text and then Noel, himself. The image shows him in a medium shot, with his head down, but still looking at the camera. He could be positioned like this because of the split of Oasis and the rise of his new band “Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds” showing he’s ‘down but not out’. The clothes that he is dressed in are clothes that he would wear out in everyday life, or perhaps on stage performing. This could have been done for the benefit of the reader as this is the way that he is most often seen. The colours of these pages have a white, blue and black theme, with most of the white based around Gallagher, almost in the way that a saint would be religiously portrayed. It is clear why this has been done, as Noel Gallagher does see himself as a god, both generally and lyrically. The text on the right hand side of the spread is all in a uniform font. It is very neat, very consistent, which is how a large number of people see the songs he writes. The audience for this page is very vast, as everyone seems to have an opinion on the Oasis front man, whether it be good, or bad. So people will want to read this to see what latest antics are.
