JorgeLuisBorgesLos Encuentros Internacionales de Arte ARTifariti celebran su IV edición abriendo espacios deencuentro en los Territorios Liberados del Sáhara Occidental. El eje central que inspira estosEncuentros es la existencia del llamadoMuro de la Vergüenza construído porMarruecos: unafortificaciónde2.700kilómetros,sembradacontresmillonesdeminasantipersona,quedivideendoselSáharaOccidentalyseparaalapoblaciónsaharauientrelaocupaciónyelexiliodesdehace35años.AtravésdelosEncuentros,elGobiernosaharauiquiereposicionarelenclavedeTifariticomounreferente cultural, convirtiendo cada año la capital simbólica de los Territorios Liberadossaharauisenunenriquecedorlaboratoriodeartes,fomentandoelintercambiodeexperienciasyconocimientosentrecreadores,contribuyendoaladifusióninternacionaldelarealidadsaharauiypotenciandoeldesarrollodeestepuebloatravésdesupatrimoniocultural.Enoposiciónalmurode lamuerte,ARTifaritiutiliza lasherramientasdelartey la culturaparaabrir espacios de unión, zonas geográficas, políticas y de la imaginación con el potencial paraflorecercomozonasdeencuentroycomunicaciónentrelaspersonasylospueblos.Enelcontextodeunatierrainvadidayliberada,quehasufridolasheridasdelaguerrayqueaúnsufrelaterriblerepresióndeMarruecos,laIVedicióndeARTifaritivienedelineadaporlarelaciónentreelarteylosDerechosHumanos,lanzandoalmundotantounmensajededenunciadelasgravesviolacionescometidasporelgobiernomarroquícontralapoblacióncivil,comoendefensadelderechodelaspersonasylospueblosasutierra,sucultura,susraícesysulibertad.Enesta líneasedesarrollaráelproyectoLos desconocidxs, retratos de desaparecidxs saharauis.LaAsociacióndeAmistadconelPuebloSaharauideSevilla(AAPSS)ylaAsociacióndeFamiliaresdePresosyDesaparecidosSaharauis(AFAPREDESA)haniniciadounproyectoenelqueinvitanaartistas internacionales a realizar retratos imaginados de personas saharauis desaparecidas acausadelaocupaciónyrepresiónmarroquí,apartirdeentrevistasconfamiliaresytestigos.ConestapropuestaqueremosinvolucraralosartistasparticipantesenARTifaritienunproyectoquepermita visibilizar la grave situación de violación constante de los Derechos Humanos en elconflicto del Sáhara, recuperar lamemoria de personas desaparecidas y así usar el arte comoherramientaparailuminarhistoriasdevidaquesehansilenciadoyocultado.LaIVedicióndelosEncuentrosacogeunSimposiosobrearteyDerechosHumanos,jornadasdereflexiónsobrelasrelacionesentrelaproducciónartísticacontemporáneayladefensaactivadelos Derechos Humanos. Este seminario del 20 al 26 de Octubre se programa en base aconversaciones,accionesyproyeccionesaudiovisuales.


Alonso Gil y Federico Guzmán son artistas que en la actualidad viven y trabajan en Sevilla. Están vinculados a ARTifariti desde su participación en la edición de 2008 y conocen en profundidad el contexto del proyecto y su evolución. Ambos se desenvuelven en diferentes campos de la creación visual y también han colaborados en numerosas ocasiones desarrollando proyectos de arte público y agitación cultural. Producciones de arte que generan situaciones que vinculan y permean los lugares. Trabajando con los contextos y no “en” los contextos. En 1997 colaboran en Ceuta con Local Cultura, una intervención del proyecto Almadraba en las tres orillas del Estrecho de Gibraltar proponiendo una reflexión sobre el contexto cotidiano y geopolítico. Son miembros del colectivo Cambalache junto con Carolina Caycedo y Adriana García Galán. Con el museo de la calle ponen en marcha prácticas de trueque y redistribución informal basadas en la economía del don. Cambalache ha rodado su carro de reciclaje desde Bogotá a Kassel, Torino, San Juan, Fortaleza, Estambul o Sevilla. Han participado en proyectos, talleres y jornadas de debate como las organizadas por el colectivo Gratis en Copilandia, una isla libre de propiedad intelectual (2005), el Salón del Carbón con Quico Rivas y el grupo refractario, periódicos como La Infiltración y La Escoria, Vacaciones en Polonia y con el grupo Moakara

Desde finales de los 70s, Hausswolf ha trabajado como compositor usando lagrabadora como instrumento principal y como artista conceptual visual trabajando con elperformance, las instalaciones de luz y sonido y la fotografía. Lamúsica deHausswolf ha sidointerpretada en Europa, Norte América y Asia en festivales como el Sónar, Electrograph eI.D.E.A.L. Enestos conciertosunaspectomuy físico, casibrutal, de laestéticadeHausswolf se


fundeconunamonótonabellezapolifrecuencial.Laaudienciasuelecaerenunaformadetrance,adormeciéndose en sus asientos. Otras veces la gente le ha agradecido "el masaje" o haexpresado"lasensacióndequelacarneselecaíadeloshuesos"debidoalasvibracionesdelasbajas frecuenciasutilizadas.El trabajoaudiovisualdeHausswolf tambiénhaencontradosalidaspictóricas. Su serie "Roja" utilizando luces rojas en diversos espacios arquitectónicos ygeográficoshamostradounaspectomásbiencríticodesuobra.Suinterésenlaarquitecturaylatopografíaadado lugara laspelículas "Hashima, Japan2002"y "AlQasr,BahriyaOasis, Egypt,2005"encolaboraciónconThomasNordanstad.CarlMichaelVonHausswolffproponeuna intervenciónenelpaisajedeTifariti iluminandoconfocosdeestadiorojosangrelasruinasdelosbombardeosdelaaviaciónmarroquí.EltítulodelaobraesRed Domestic Death – Tifariti 2010(Muerte Roja Doméstica – Tifariti 2010).AbrahamLacalleSevilla,EspañaAbrahamLacallenacióenAlmeríaen1962,comenzósucarreraenladécadadelos80syen1994ganó labecadepromociónartísticade laCasadeVelázquezenMadrid.Suobrasecaracterizaportenerreferenciasliterarias‐Lowry,Pessoa,delaSerna‐,disciplinaquetambiéncultiva.Ensustelas hay referencias a grandes maestros de la pintura, como Marcel Duchamp, Picasso,Mondrian o Philip Guston. Sus obras impactan por la especial subjetividad que hace en eltratamientodelcolor.Asuvezenellahay,deformairónicaysarcástica,constantesreferenciasalos grandesmovimientos artísticos y literarios del siglo XX y una crítica social. En cuanto a sucreación,Lacalledice“todos lo elementos que integran los cuadros, ya sean apropiaciones o no, resuenan como partes indispensables de mi relación con el exterior. El artista nosmuestra al joven dejado por lamareaenlaplayadespuésdeunnaufragio,yencarceladoporlapolicíaespañola,quiendescifrasugris‐gris,deconstruyendosuidentidad,dejándolosinnadadesuorigen.EltrabajodeOumar,queusaobjetosencontradosdenaufragios,fotosdeprensa,señalesdetráficoeuropeas,mantasyamuletoschamánicosafricanos,exploralosvaloresperdidosyencontradosporesteinmigranteposmodernoensuviajeiniciáticoatravésdelasfronteras,invitándonosamirarnuestropropiomundoconojosdiferentes.ElcreadorsenegalésvaarealizarunainstalacióninsituapartirdeunajaimanómadaentornoalosconceptosdefronterayexclusiónconeltítuloÀ La Limite (En El Límite).


RubénPolancoMadrid,EspañaRubénPolanconacióenReinosa(Cantabria)en1965.ViveenTorrelodonesytrabajaenVillalba(Madrid). Es graduado en la especialidadde Técnico Superior en Escultura en la EEAAnº 1 deMadrid. Ha trabajado en el teatro, el cine y la televisión, principalmente, elaborandoescenografías y decorados. Trabaja principalmente la escultura y la instalación, desarrollandoprocesosnarrativospróximosalcuentoylafábula.EnsusobraslaconfusióndelasdimensionestemporalesnosconducenaplanteamientossubversivospropiosdelgenerodelaCienciaFicción,produciendo un efecto desconcertante y distanciador. Sus trabajos, también apelan a unaperentoriedad de la conciencia para romper los efectos “Ilusionistas” de la obra de arte, paraello, utiliza procesos de producción que parecen estar excitados por una estrategia de la“distanciación”,iluminadoradelanaturalezaficticia,ytransportadoraaestadosdeensoñación,porlaquesepretendequelacreacióntoquelaconcienciadeestemodofurtivo;constituyéndoseasílacreación,enunprocedimientodidácticosocializado.Rubén Polanco construirá una estructura metálica en el paisaje de grandes dimensiones queevoca “la respiración del desierto”. Conectando cielo y tierra su escultura se titula Estrella Saharaui. MauraSheehanNuevaYork.EE.UUwww.maurasheehan.net Maura Sheehan es una artista visual que hace instalaciones y es la directora del proyectoeducativosinánimodelucroMap(ManhattanArtProgram).Entresustrabajosrecientescabendestacarlasdosinstalacionesparala“GallerieBerlinamMeer”quesereferíanalaausenciadelMuroyalaunificacióndeAlemania.Conunusoinnovadordelosmateriales,Sheehancreaunarespuesta escultórica a la dinámica social o a la situación arquitectónica del lugar específico.Sheehan está comprometida con el arte como herramienta de transformación, en un sentidopolíticoypoético.La artista norteamericana va a trabajar con la luz del Sol en el espacio creando una cámaraoscura que conecta Texas con Tifariti. El título de su obra esEnergetic Exchange (Intercambio energético).


PROYECTOSSELECCIONADOSENCONVOCATORIAABIERTAART2010‐Visible/invisible,deCarlotaBeltrameySebastiánFriedman(Argentina).Losartistasproponenla construcción de cámaras estenopeicas conmateriales encontrados para establecer vínculosconstelares históricos a través de imágenes en las que la luz solar tiene un lugar de máximaimportanciaporsupresenciaenelterreno.

‐Jaima: Symbol and Solidarity Space(Jaima: Símbolo y espacio de solidaridad),deNeilRudden(Irlanda). Transformar una jaima en un espacio para las prácticas creativas como símbolo deesperanzaydeconexiónentreelpueblosaharauiylacomunidadinternacional.

‐La acumulación de la memoria, de Gonzalo Sáenz de Santa María (España). El artistaextremeño propone una aportación a la construcción de álbumes familiares como acto deacumulacióndelamemoriadelacomunidadsaharaui.

‐Diario enterrado (27 de febrero), de Miluca Sanz (España). El proyecto consiste en el actomágicodeenterrarlafechadel27defebreroenBirLehlu(fechaylugardelaproclamacióndelaRepúblicaÁrabeSaharauiDemocrática)paraquecrezca,genereenergíaasualrededoreinfluyaen los que la rodean. El lugar será señalado con un gran escultura que representa la hoja delcalendario.

‐Parábola acústica Tifariti, de Pablo Serret de Ena (España). ELSÁHARAOCCIDENTALElconflictodelSáharaOccidentaltienesuorigenenelmalogradoprocesodedescolonizacióndeeste territorio. En 1975 España, la potencia colonial hasta entonces, cedió a los interesesexpansionistasdelaspotenciasvecinasentregandoelterritorioaMarruecosyMauritaniapesealassucesivasresolucionesdeNacionesUnidasquereconocíanelderechoalaautodeterminacióna la poblaciónde este país africano. Esto provocó el estallido de un conflicto armadoentre elFrente Popular para la Saguía el Hamra y el Río de Oro (Frente POLISARIO) y los estados deMarruecosyMauritania,éstaúltimaseretiróendelconflictoen1979.Desde1990,unaltoel fuegodiopasosucesivosplanesdepaz(1991,1997y2003)auspiciadosporlaONUylaUnidadAfricana,quehanfracasadoalahoradeponerenprácticalosacuerdosyquehanalargadodosdécadasmás(másde34años)elsufrimientodelpueblosaharauiquevivedivididoaunoyotro ladodelmuromarroquídemásdedosmilkilómetrosde longitud.Porelladosaharaui,elejércitomarroquíhasembradouncampominadodemilmetrosdeanchuraalolargodelmuro,unalíneademuertedibujadapor3millonesdeminas.El muro, recorrido también por acuartelamientos marroquíes equipados con sofisticadatecnologíamilitar, atraviesa todo el territorio saharaui desde el norte hasta la CostaAtlántica,obligandoa la separación forzosade familias ypersonas.Aun lado, lapoblación saharauiqueviveensuterritoriobajoocupaciónyquesufrecontinuasviolacionesdesusDerechosHumanosyelexpoliodesusrecursosnaturales.Alotrolado,entornoa180.000refugiadosquevivenenloscampamentosdeTindouf,enlaHammadaargelina.TIFARITILaciudadliberadadeTifariti,escenariodegrandesbatallasydeunamasacre,elbombardeodelapoblaciónsaharauiconnapalmyfósforoelmismodíadelaentradaenvigordelaltoalfuego;seencuentraenlaporcióndeterritoriodelSáharaOccidentalquecontrolaelFrentePOLISARIO.Aescasadistanciadelmurodefensivomarroquí,esteenclavehistóricoestásiendosedeen losúltimosañosdemovilizacionesyaccionesreivindicativasporlosderechosdelpueblosaharauiylosDerechosHumanosenelSáhara.Entreestas iniciativasseencuentraArtifaritique,desde laexpresiónartística,aportanuevasvoces,imágenesyargumentosparalaresolucióndelconflicto.Durantelacolonia,Tifaritifueunpequeñopobladoalrededordeunpuestomilitarespañol,conpista de aterrizaje y un pequeño barrio de viviendas en bóveda que llevaba el nombre de laempresaconstructora,Colominas,comoenelbarriodelmismonombreenElAaiún.AdemásdeserenclavedelosacontecimientosmásrelevantesdelaRASD;sehaedificadounhospital,unaescuelayseestáconstruyendoeledificiodelParlamento,elBarriodelaSolidaridad,unapresaquepuedagarantizarelsuministrodeaguaaunapoblaciónestableysetrabajaenlamejoradelhuerto.Tifariti seencuentra localizadaenunamesetadesértica ypedregosa,dondecomienzahaciaelinterior la Hammada, con poca vegetación, aunque bajo la superficie existen algunas bolsasnaturalesdeagua.Elpaisajedetodalazonaesdeunagranbelleza,conunclimamássuavequeenotros lugaresdeldesiertoydibujadoporpequeñascolinasyrocassueltasde impresionantetamaño, forma y belleza. En las épocas de lluvia, el suelo se cubre de flores y trufas. En losalrededores de Tifariti se asientan por temporadas las jaimas de los nómadas dedicados alpastoreo de cabras y camellos. En la zona hay importantes yacimientos arqueológicos, que


algunosexpertoshanacuñadocomodel“neolíticosahariano”porsussingularescaracterísticas.El más famoso ‐el complejo de Erqueyez‐ está a unos 40 km., en cuevas excavadas en unacantilado y con una meseta superior rocosa absolutamente fascinante. projectsofpublicartandculturalagitation.Projectsthatprovidesituationsinvolvingtheplaceandthecommunities,workingwiththecontextaswellasinthecontext.In 1997, Gil and Guzmán collaborated in Local Culture, an intervention within the projectAlmadrabaonthethreeshoresoftheStraitofGibraltar,embracingareflectiononeverydaylife and the geopolitical context. They are members of the Cambalache (Swap) Collective,togetherwithCarolinaCaycedoandAdrianaGarcíaGalán.WiththeStreetMuseumtheyhavestartedupdynamicsofbarterandinformalredistributionofgoodsandservicesbasedontheeconomy of the gift. withnapalmandwhitephosphorusonthesamedayofenforcementoftheUNcease‐fire) islocatedintheportionofWesternSaharacontrolledbythePolisarioFront.Atashortdistancefrom the Moroccan defensive wall, this town has been in recent years the home ofdemonstrationsandinitiativesinsupportoftheSaharawipeople'srightsandHumanRightsintheSahara.AmongtheseinitiativesisARTifariti,aprojectthatusesartisticexpressionasawaytobringinnewvoices,imagesandargumentsfortheresolutionoftheconflict.Duringcolonialtimes,TifaritiwasasmalltownwithaSpanishmilitarypost,anairstripandasmallresidentialneighborhoodofdome‐shapedhousesbearingthenameoftheconstructioncompany,Colominas,asintheneighborhoodofthesamenameinElAaiún.InadditiontobetheenclaveofthemostimportanteventsoftheSADR,Tifaritihasahospital,aschoolandtheParliamentbuildingisunderconstruction,thereistheSolidarityNeighborhood,adamthatcanguaranteewater supply to a stable population and there iswork carried on to improve theorchard.Tifaritiislocatedonaplateauofstonydesert,wheretheHammadabeginsinwards,withlittlevegetation,butbeneaththesurfacetherearesomenaturalwaterdeposits.Thelandscapeoftheentireregionisofgreatbeauty,withamilderclimatethanelsewhereinthedesert,drawnby smallhills and rocksof impressive size, shapeandbeauty. In timesof rain, theground iscoveredwithflowersandtruffles.Duringthisseason,thetentsofnomadsheepherd’sofgoatsand camels settle around Tifariti. The area has significant archaeological sites, which someexpertshavenamedasthe"SaharanNeolithic"becauseofitsuniquecharacteristics.Themostfamous is the Erqueyez site, about 40 km. away. From caves dug into a cliff above a rockyplateau, the view is breathtaking.
