Welcome to Dorking FC at Westhumble - our home venue for what promises to be quite a season in
the history of Dorking FC, both on and off the field.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to our visitors today - all the players, management, staff and supporters of Balham.
With no fewer than eight games, October has been the busiest month we’ll see this season. We’ve enjoyed a number of very exciting matches, even if we haven’t always achieved the results we would have liked.
We all want the Chicks to finish as high up the table as possible. But its far more important that we lay the right foundations in place to ensure the club can return home to Meadowbank next season with a strong base for the future. That means no quick fix just to move a couple of places up the league.
Instead, it means placing emphasis on developing local and youthful who have an affinity with the club and make it mean something to the local community, giving them time to improve and progress under first rate coaching. It means playing football in the right way with the right values, reflecting our ambition to build Dorking as a club with an amateur ethos but professional standards.
So, even when results don’t go our way, we have to take the long-term view. It’s rewarding to see a new look, locally based and youthful team come together under the expert guidance of our manager Danny Fox.
Danny has huge knowledge of local football, reflected in the fact he was invited to be the first-ever guest co-host of Surrey’s non-league radio show Back of the Net last week. On the programme, he set out a clear vision for developing not just a team, but a whole football club - and it’s a huge tribute to the work being done by Danny, along with his assistants Chris Wye and Greg Fidele, that we’ve made such progress so quickly since they took over the first team in the summer.
More than half the squad is currently from Dorking and

the immediately surrounding villages and, throughout October, our starting XI regularly included eight or nine local players and five teenagers.
We might have liked a few more points last month (although it’s worth remembering that six of our games were against teams in the top five of the division), but the performances are constantly improving and we can see the younger players learning fast.
So we have to be patient. There’s little doubt that putting together a team based around youthful players representing their home town is the right course to create a thriving and sustainable club that appeals to the community. We’re seeing a real enthusiasm for Dorking FC from local people and, since coming back to play in the town this season, our attendances have been running well above the average for clubs in our league – sometimes as much as double. Thank you very much for your support – it means a lot and is really important as we all work to revitalise this great old club for the benefit of the whole town.
The exciting move back to our new stadium at our ancestral home of Meadowbank gets ever closer. This week, we met with Surrey FA for an initial meeting on the terms of our long-term lease, and we also met once again with Mole Valley District Council to finalise the internal detail of what will be a superb new clubhouse, offering a seven day a week facility for Dorking FC and local football.
With Surrey FA relocating their headquarters to the new ground, Dorking Wanderers’ first team playing home matches there and local youth clubs training weekly,
our rebuilt ground will be at a thriving hub of Surrey football – a lasting legacy for sport that will regenerate that area and bring people into the town centre. We’ve come a long way from the days when Meadowbank was expected to become another supermarket and be lost to sport forever!
Finally, I would like to bring attention to two big Under 18 games coming up here at Westhumble in the next week or so. Our new unified youth set up, being run by Dorking FC on behalf of the Dorking Football Development Alliance, has made good progress in recent weeks with both teams winning through to the next round of the Surrey FA Midweek Cup. On Thursday November 10th, the Ryman Youth League team will play Abbey Rangers and the following week, on Thursday November 17th, the Southern Youth League side have a glamorous tie hosting Woking FC Academy. Both games kick off at 7:45pm, so please do try and come along to support our players of the future.
I hope you enjoy the game and your visit to Dorking FC today – and look forward to welcoming you back here again soon.
Kind Regards
Alan GoutChairman, Dorking FC

Good afternoon and welcome to Westhumble for our second home game against Balham
this season. I would like to welcome Greg Cruttwell and his players back for today’s league game.
It was good to have a full week’s training with the players this week after a month of midweek and Saturday games.
October was always going to be tough, with eight games including six against teams in the top five of the division. Although we may not have got as many points as we wanted, the performances were good enough to convince us that it will only be a matter of time before we get the results we have deserved.
However, talk is cheap and it’s over to the players now to prove their point. We start today by trying to reverse what was probably our worst performance of the season - the cup tie in September against our visitors this afternoon.
Injuries have taken their toll recently and it has required those who haven’t had as much game time lately to come in to the team and prove a point. In most cases I think they have. I was happy for Paul Davies scoring our opener against AC London last week, George Knight’s contribution against Banstead in the league certainly gave us food for

thought, and it was good to see Kieran Lunn returning in scoring form after his paternity leave.
The youth team have played their part as well, with Will Conroy joining fellow Under 18 Alex Watts as the latest of our young crop to make a fantastic debut in challenging circumstances. It’s times like these that show the importance of the squad as opposed to the team and I think, in that respect, we have been strong.
Will Hearn has returned to Dorking Wanderers after his month-long loan. We’re sad to see him go after some good performances in the centre of the park but we wish him all the best in the future. We are talking to a couple of other players at the moment with regards to strengthening the side and I will hopefully be able to update you with that in due course.
I hope you enjoy the game.
Up the Chicks.

DFC PLAYER PROFILE
jamesherouvin
One of the breakthrough players from last season’s Under 18s, James Herouvin is a model for the
Dorking FC pathway bringing players through from local youth clubs to represent their home town in senior football.
Having played as part of the academy set-up in Aldershot during his mid-teens, James finished his youth football at highly-respected Brockham Badgers, leaving to join the new Dorking FC U18s two years ago under the tutelage of club legend Steve Lunn.
With his pace and desire to take on full backs, James was a prominent member of the youth squad but had to prove himself once again in the summer as first team manager Danny Fox began assembling his side, looking at youth team players who could make the step up.
He’s had to remain patient, limited to appearances from the bench until mid-September, but James has really made his mark in October. Danny Fox challenged him to show he could make the same impact from the start as he had shown when coming on as a substitute, and James responded with three goals during the month.
“My aim this season is simply to score as many goals as I can and establish myself as a regular part of the starting eleven,” says James. “Alongside that, obviously I want to play my part to push Dorking as high up the table as possible.”
James says he’s really enjoying his first season of senior football, coinciding with the Chicks’ return to playing in the town.
“It’s been good playing at Westhumble,” he says, “and those times when there’s a large crowd of local people supporting the team, it really encourages you and pushes you on. That’s been the best thing about playing for the first team.”
A Liverpool fan (“Blame my Dad!”), James rates scoring a winning goal for Aldershot in a youth County Cup Final as his best moment in football so far. But, based on his first months in senior football here in his home town, don’t bet against him getting something to top that with the Chicks at some point in the many years to come.

A first goal from 16 year old Alex Watts and a brace from striker Jimmy Brazil set Dorking on their way to a
thoroughly deserved win over league strugglers Cove.
The Chicks went into the match knowing it as important to get a good win, following a run of games against strong sides without getting the results that their overall level of performance probably deserved.
Despite that, manager Danny Fox stuck by the club’s commitment to develop local and youthful players, once again naming five teenagers in his starting XI, which included eight players from Dorking or the adjacent villages.
After some even early exchanges, with both sides playing at a pace but misplacing passes in the rush, the Chicks slowly began to build some pressure on the Cove defence. The warning signs for the visitors came just before the quarter hour mark as an Owen Hunte corner found Alex Watts at the back post, but his header was blocked in the line.
After ten minutes of Dorking dominance, winning several corners, the Chicks did eventually take the lead through the same combination. Hunte delivered the dead ball and the young centre back Watts rose to power the ball into the net at the far post, to score in only his second appearance since becoming the latest player to step up from Dorking’s increasingly productive Under 18 squad.
It might be the youthfulness of the Chicks this season but, having taken the lead, they appeared to slacken off a little - at least enough to allow Cove to get a foothold back in the game, and it was little surprise when the visitors drew level less than ten minutes later, Jordan Ekpiteta tapping in a cut back from three yards as the Dorking defence gave their opponents too much time and space in the box.
The goal provided a wake up call and Andy Miller restores the Chicks lead with an excellent side-footed strike on the stroke of half-time.
The second half was a different story as Dorking dominated from start to finish, rarely letting the pace or effort drop, pressing constantly, working hard to retain possession and always looking to extend the lead.
The rewards came as early as the 46th minute. Will Hearn fed captain Jimmy Brazil who edged forward before unleashing an unstoppable 20 yard shot high into the right hand side of the net, past the diving Cove keeper’s despairing hand.
It was the keeper’s fantastic one-handed save on the stretch that just prevented Jordon Boukhari extending the Dorking lead with a header from Brazil’s cross, but the Chicks did eventually make it 4-1 on 73 minutes. Substitute Paul Davies won a header from Jake Nimmo’s goal kick, knocking the ball down for Brazil to run on and round the Cove keeper, before calmly tapping it into an empty net.
The goal was Brazil’s sixth in the eight games since new manager Danny Fox recognised his attacking threat and converted the one-time utility player to a striker.
Right-winger James Herouvin slotted home a fifth for the Chicks from a tight angle, his third goal since graduating from the youth squad to become a senior player this season.
A fine strike with the last meaningful kick of the game was nothing more than a consolation for Cove, and the very late goal conceded could not take the gloss off a fine performance enjoyed by another large crowd (including representatives from Dorking’s twin town of Gouvieux), the Chicks once again attracting an attendance among the very best in the division since returning to the town to play at Westhumble this season.

The Chicks found themselves outmuscled by promotion challengers Chessington & Hook in the first half and,
despite growing into the game to have the best of the second period, couldn’t quite force an equaliser.
The hosts and former Premier Division side started at pace, having seen their ambitions to gain promotion back at the first attempt dented by back-to-back defeats. But having survived the early onslaught and in a game of contrasting styles, Dorking began to piece some good moves together.
Andy Miller, Jordon Boukhari and Will Hearn began combining well to play the ball through midfield, while frequently picking up the second ball from Chessington’s knocks forward.
Still it was Chessington who took the lead, through a goal that used to be a Stoke City speciality. A throw-in in line with the Dorking six yard box was hurled into the area all the way to the far post, where it was perhaps a too-easy task to head it into the Chicks’ net.
Buoyed by their success, the hosts began to take control, loading balls and players into the box at every opportunity. As Chessington stepped up their physical presence, another youthful Dorking side with five teenage starters found themselves bullied out of the game.
Jack Wisbey, Luke Harmsworth and Brandon Watts stood firm at the back, alongside Owen Hunte who, at left back, was putting on his best display of the season, showing the way by battling for the ball and then breaking forward.
However, Dorking had the woodwork to thank for keeping the score at 1-0 as a 20 yard freekick crashed against the crossbar, and a superb stop by keeper Tom Day from a point blank header ensured the Chicks were still in the game at half time.
It was a much brighter start to the second half for Dorking as the players, many in their first full season of senior football began to show more of the edge and desire required to match their physically stronger opponents. Jimmy Brazil led by example as he held the ball up at the front, bringing Owen Hunte and substitute Stuart Russell into play. He also showed skill when he dropped deeper, a visionary through ball nearly setting James Herouvin through on goal.
Despite the Chicks working their collective socks off, and playing the game largely in the Chessington half, clear cut chances were scarce, but trailing by just a single goal and with little in the way of an attacking threat now coming from the hosts, Dorking played with a belief they could get something from the game.
The best opportunity arrived when Andy Miller was in on goal, but his shot was lifted over the top of the goal and Chessington held on for the points.
It was a disappointing outcome, bearing in mind the second half effort - but the disappointment is a measure of how far the team has progressed this season. Two months ago, Dorking might have crumbled in a game like this, but this new, young and locally-based team is on a steep learning curve, building for the future. Danny Fox’s squad will have benefitted enormously from facing and then coming to terms with such physically more imposing opponents.

Despite rounding off October’s packed eight-game schedule with a narrow defeat, the Chicks made
promotion favourites AC London work hard for the win, in a game that demonstrated just how far Danny Fox’s side have progressed in two months.
When the two sides met at Westhumble in August, AC London ran out 5-0 winners and could have won by an even more comfortable margin. This time around, the game once again produced five goals, but they were far more evenly distributed.
AC London entered the Combined Counties League this season with the stated aim of achieving promotion through the divisions as swiftly as possible, investing in the recruitment of players from far and wide, including internationally, to achieve their goal.
By contrast, Dorking has set out to use this season to build a locally-based team, developing younger players who can proudly represent their home team and lay the foundations for a club prioritising the community, where players and team can develop together.
Manager Danny Fox has stuck resolutely to that pan. Despite injuries and suspensions depleting the squad, the Chicks’ boss resisted the temptation to bring in new players form further afield, instead using the absences as an opportunity to hand a first team debut to local youth team centre back Will Conroy – one of five teenagers in Dorking’s starting line up.
The early signs were ominous for Dorking, when keeper Jake Nimmo came for an AC London long ball over the top but couldn’t collect it, giving the hosts the simple task of passing into an unguarded goal for a 1-0 lead with just six minutes gone.
Undeterred, the Chicks took the game to AC London, carving out a number of chances and forcing four corners in quick succession, only to see each one scrambled clear.
Dorking’s midweek meeting with Chessington had seen the youthful Chicks bullied out of the game by physically imposing opponents, and AC London also brought a physical approach to their game.
But this time, Danny Fox’s side remained resolute, despite being on the receiving end of some debatable challenges and getting little in he way of protection from the referee, even when a late challenge forced Ryan Lunn to retire from the field after half an hour – the 17 year old replaced by his older brother Kieran Lunn, making an unexpectedly early appearance from the bench on his first game back from paternity leave.
When Dorking’s determination eventually received its reward, it came in spectacular fashion. Andy Miller played the ball to Paul Davies, who finished with a brilliant left footed lob from 25 yards to make it 1-1 at half time.
If Dorking had been punching above their weight in the first half, AC London quickly re-established the lead expected of their widely-recruited team after the break. Their second goal came on 50 minutes and, a quarter of n hour later, it was 3-1 as the hosts stole the ball in midfield and, three slick passes later, put it past Nimmo in the Dorking goal.
Still the Chicks looked for a way back into the game and, with just a few minutes remaining, Kieran Lunn crashed a superb 20 yard free kick off the underside of the crossbar and into the net, brining the score back to 3-2 and ensuring a grandstand finish.

THE HISTORY OFDORKING FC
Football has been played in Dorking since the 1830s. The first matches took place in the street.
An annual game was staged every Shrove Tuesday in the High Street, preceded by a procession led by a band as well as men dressed as women collecting donations and carrying a cross.
On the left of the cross was a red, white and blue football, on the top a gold ball and on the right a red and green football representing the ‘cockerel colours’ of Dorking FC - the same colours we wear proudly today. The Shrove Tuesday game tradition continued until 1905 when it became outlawed - although the club is now looking at ways to reintroduce the historic community event.
Dorking Football Club was founded in 1880, shortly after the FA had defined formal rules for the game, and now lays claim to the title of the oldest senior club in Surrey. The cockerel logo was also immediately adopted as the club’s badge. It still remains there today and is why we are affectionately known as ‘The Chicks’.
The club first played at a pitch on West Bank before moving to Fairfield Drive and then on to Pixham Lane in the 1920s. In 1953 we moved to our current home location at Meadowbank - an iconic, picturesque location just behind the High Street, where the bells of St Martin’s can be heard peeling during the games. The new stadium was the pride of the town with a capacity of 5000, including a stand accommodating 700, opened by the then FA Secretary Sir Stanley Rous.
In 1974 we joined forces with Guildford City to become Guildford & Dorking United FC for an ill-fated three year period, before being reconstituted as Dorking Town FC, before reverting to the traditional named of Dorking FC in 1981.
On the pitch, our record over the years reflects the traditional highs and lows of non-league football, including many notable achievements as well as the occasional despair. In 1955 we became the first
Surrey club to defeat a professional team when we beat Folkestone 3-1 in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup in front of a record crowd of over 4000 spectators.
The late 1980s and early 90s are considered to be our glory years with cup victories and a league title, along with a promotion in 1989 followed by another promotion in 1993 to the Premier Division of the Isthmian League. In 1992-3 we won the Southern Counties Combination Cup and reached the first round proper of the FA Cup, losing a thrilling game 3-2 at home to Peter Shilton’s Plymouth Argyle in front of TV cameras and a bumper crowd, many of whom still talk about it today while continuing to support the Chicks with a passion.
We continued to play at Meadowbank until 2013 when the ground was closed by the local authority on health and safety grounds. A lack of investment and years of decay came home to roost and the club, now playing in the Combined Counties League Division One, was forced to leave the town and ground share in Horley.
The future was uncertain for the Chicks but, in early 2014, a new Board of local enthusiasts took over control and set out on an ambitious plan to rebuild the club as a community and social enterprise that would re-establish itself in the town, developing local talent.
An agreement was made with Mole Valley Council for the ground at Meadowbank to be re-developed and Dorking FC have returned to playing in the town this year - initially at Westhumble Playing Fields before finally going home to the new Meadowbank for the 2017-2018 season.
Our new ground will feature the latest 3G artificial playing surface and, as well as having a new clubhouse, the site will also house the new headquarters of Surrey FA. Dorking FC will once again be very much at the centre of football activities in Surrey.

OPPOSITION HISTORY
BALHAM FC
Balham FC was formed in 2011 in order to provide player progression
into open age football for the hugely talented, high achieving age group teams of Balham Blazers FC, which was founded by Greg Cruttwell in 2001.
Having won back-to-back promotions in 2011/12 and 2012/13, Balham did the league and cup double in the Surrey South Eastern Combination in 2013/14.
In 2014/15 Balham finished in a promotion position again in the Surrey Elite Intermediate League however promotion was denied due to Combined Counties League facility requirements not being met.
Having moved to ground share with Cobham FC in order to meet the facility requirements Balham finished as runners up in the SEIFL in 2015/16 and as a result have been promoted to the Combined Counties League for the 2016/17 season.
Having begun on Wimbledon Extension before moving to Cobham,
Balham will be playing at Colliers Wood Utd for the next two seasons, ground sharing with the CCL Premier Division club.
