From the Executive DirectorDear Friends,

Welcome to the Dorchester Center for the Arts!

For nearly five decades now, DCA has been leading the way as the major arts provider for Dorchester County, advancing opportunities for all age groups and supporting artists young, old and in-between. In 2020, DCA will celebrate its 50th Anniversary. What an incredible

milestone! Multiple generations have been impacted by the arts at DCA, and thousands have come through the doors on the quest to discover their inner artist. In the past two years alone, over 25,000 people have experienced the arts at DCA.

The DCA art community inspires creativity and empowers artists at all levels. From art classes and music programs to interest groups and gallery exhibits, there is a broad array of programs and services to nourish the mind, body and spirit. I hope you will find offerings within these pages for enjoyment and enrichment during these winter months.

To all our members, friends, partners and supporters – past, present and future – thank you for being a part of the arts at DCA. Your participation is a vital part of the process of creating community through the arts. Fiber FridaysJoin the fiber group on Friday mornings. It’s much more fun to share your ideas and experiences so bring whatever project you are working on, from knitting to quilting to rug hooking to needlepoint, all are welcome. This group is facilitated by advanced needle artist Windy Karpavage who is always willing to offer help. DCA membership encouraged but not required.

Friday Morning DrawingThis is a weekly portrait sketching group, open to artists of all levels and experience. No instructor. Participants take turns for 20-minute poses. Bring your choice of medium: pencil, graphite, charcoal, colored pencils or pens.

Choptank WritersThe purpose of this group is to encourage all genres of writing; to provide a setting for sharing those writings by giving one another helpful feedback and to promote our community’s wealth of knowledge and appreciation for the written word. Baywater Camera ClubFriendly and supportive environment for photographers of all abilities. The mission of the club is to provide opportunities for members to learn and enjoy the art and science of photography, to present lectures, courses of study, demonstrate techniques, participate in exhibitions and contests and to sponsor any activities that further the purpose of the club.

Stained Glass Class with Jan BoettgerChallenge yourself and try something new this year. If you’ve ever admired a stained glass window and marveled as sunrays passed through its brightly colored panels, try making one yourself. Anyone can learn the art of creating beautiful stained glass plaques and panels. Detailed instructions include: design, cutting, foiling, and soldering. This class is geared toward beginner and intermediate students but more advanced students are welcome. Each piece created becomes a masterpiece that will delight you for years to come.

Advanced Open Clay StudioOpen Studio allows advanced ceramic artists to work autonomously in our clay studio. You must have taken a previous ceramics class prior to this program. Exceptions may be made if knowledge can be proven. The studio fee includes 50 pounds of clay. Additional clay can be ordered at the student’s expense. Participants must provide specialty glazes, hand tools, towels and plastic to cover the projects. Ceramics pieces should be average size, not exceeding 14” x 14” x 14” unless approved. Firings are done 2-4 times a month. If requested, a clay instructor will be available on the first and third Tuesday of the month from 4-7pm for an additional $25. fee per session. Studio clean-up is required.

Ceramics and Sculpture With Robert GladneyThe perfect class for newcomers to ceramics. You’ll learn techniques for both wheel and hand building. Basic tool techniques needed to throw a variety of vessels will open up a new world. Students will create cylinders and bowls along with learning the fundamentals of making more complex projects. You’ll learn to glaze your own pieces. Class includes all tools and materials, but students should have trimmed fingernails and dress to get messy!

Carving Decoys with Warren SaundersLearn to carve from a world renowned Master Carver. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced carver you will learn more than you thought possible. Warren has the patience to teach beginners and the depth of knowledge to teach experienced carvers. Students of all levels will learn how to carve using power tools, knives, wire brushes, and paint brushes. No matter what, if you’ve carved before, or have always wanted to learn, you’ll be amazed at your finished project. Beautifully carved and beautifully painted.

Fiber Fun: Exploring Contemporary Knitting & More with Windy KarpavageBeyond the basics, you’ll be amazed at what you didn’t know and how much more you will learn from Windy. Left and right hand knitting can be taught. Students will learn the many different types of fibers and how they affect the outcome of a project. You’ll learn how to understand patterns, how to add your own unique style to the pattern you’ve selected and how to grow by thinking outside the box. Want to learn felting and where to find the best selection of fabric liners and hardware for projects? All these secrets will be revealed to you in this class.

Beginning Watercolors with Diana EvansTrue beginners will love to see the progress they can make with even one class with Diana. Let your creative spirit soar. You’ll learn which brush to use, the proper water to paint ratio, how to set up a palette, how to mix colors and whether to use wet on wet or wet on dry to achieve the look you want. Students will experiment with several techniques and produce a finished painting. No experience needed! Materials list will be available upon registering for the class.

Thursday Sandwich Scholars: A lunchtime learning experience for cold winter daysBring your sandwich, we’ll provide hot and cold drinks and dessert. Rev up your brain over the winter months and warm your heart by joining us to learn and discuss various topics. Topics will include: The Psychology of Color and its effects on mood, How the right frame can make your art pop, Relax through the art of Zentangle, Social Media Basics, What determines the value of art? Eastern Shore road trips, Aspects of art, Exploring Dorchester, Skipjack Heritage, and many more.

Life Drawing with Robert GladneyStudy interpretations of the human figure using various mediums. You’ll learn how to show the differences in the skeletal structure and body composition by using shading, sharp and soft line while drawing from a live model. Picture Perfect Pets with Robert GladneyImmortalize your special non-human. Now you can learn the techniques that will achieve that everlasting drawing of your favorite pet. This is the perfect class to achieve that dream. Bring in an 8”X10” photo that you’d like to work from along with the tools you’ll need in your desired medium. Not sure what you’ll need? Intermediate Watercolors with Barb ZuehlkeBeyond the basics in watercolor techniques. Paint what you love, love what you paint. Basic Drawing for Beginning Artists (Ages 8-13)Have fun learning the basic skills. An art class for the young person who has a strong interest in developing their skills. Students will gain confidence and understanding through knowledge learned and experience. Under the tutorage of skilled artist Robert Gladney you’ll learn to use several different drawing mediums and to develop at your own rate. All materials will be provided.

Painting Still Life In Oil with Maggii SarfatyJoin this award-winning artist as she unlocks the secrets of painting in oil. As you paint still life, you’ll learn how to see like an artist. This is an introductory class where you will explore good composition, how to create an underpainting, evaluation and application of color through still life. All theories explained will help painters grow and improve any artist! All materials will be provided.

Song Writing 3 Day Workshop with Paul LewisDo you have a song in your head that you know is good but want to make it great? Learn lyric and melody so that you’ll be able to develop your own song on your first and second day. Then, on the third day, you’ll perform in front of an audience of friends, family and neighbors. Students will be shown on guitar, piano and harmonica how to build a melody, then we will focus on the lyrics in order to complete your song.

Social Media Workshop with Katie HurleyIn this class you will learn how to properly get your art on the Internet. You’ll also learn the best platform (Facebook or Instagram) to use, how best to photograph your work and how to create engaging content and connect to your audience in this two-day workshop. Zen Weekend 3 Day WorkshopIt is said that “Art and Zen are the same”. Whether it is flower arranging (ikebana), calligraphy (shodo), brush painting (sumi-e), or the famous tea ceremony (chanoyu), Zen is inseparable from these arts, the artist, and the viewer. Come take part in the culture that inspired Impressionists like Degas, Monet, and Van Gogh through a variety of programs including public demonstrations and workshops on flower arranging, calligraphy, and brush painting, a Japanese flute concert (shakuhachi), a tea ceremony, and others.

The Art of Screen Painting with John IampieriA three hour workshop where you’ll create an historically accurate screen like those developed in Old Baltimore back in 1913. These screens created privacy for row house owners. Magically, the painting on one side of the screen is visible to the street but only the people inside the room can see through the screen. Each student will paint their own 14”x19” wood framed, tear resistant screen.

Pysanky: Ukrainian Egg Decorating with Cheryl PriceLearn this ancient art of decorating blown out eggs and the history behind the art. Each student will learn the techniques passed on through generations and be able to practice these techniques on two eggs. Bring your own thoughts and ideas or copy one of the samples available.

Fun & Funky Furniture with Terri GriffinThis two-day workshop will teach the art of up-cycling furniture. Through the magic of your ideas, paint, glue and other materials will transform a shabby old piece of furniture into a one-of-a-kind piece of art. Students learn how to decoupage and embellish with a variety of items, then seal the piece with polyurethane so the piece will last a lifetime and more. You bring a small piece of furniture, all other supplies will be provided. Participants take home their completed piece of furniture as well as an instructional printout of the process for future reference. Ideas for a piece to decorate are, an end table a small cabinet, or a small chair.

Teen Poetry Workshop (Age 13-18)Grace Cavalieri, Maryland’s 10th Poet Laureate’s Workshop on Writing Poetry. Tell your story through poetry. This course involves talks, prompts and writing on the spot. “We don’t make poems as instant relics, but rather access the ideas always available to us.” The students will learn methods to jump start poems at home. Please bring writing materials to the workshop. Grace will record each poet with at least a few of their new lines created, to make a podcast of the event.

For those under 18 years of age, please bring signed permission slips which will be furnished at registration so that photos may be taken and used by the Maryland State Arts Council.

Children’s Tales Told, Dance and Sing along with Storyteller Granddaddy, Walter Jones (Age 3-10)Granddaddy is a musical storyteller and some-what of a pied piper. Well known in Baltimore where children flocked to his performances. This promises to be a fun and engaging educational experience that opens the door to the world of knowledge by presenting quality “edutainment” that not only stimulates young minds with the best of contemporary culture but also teaches vital social and educational skills. Adults are encouraged to stay and watch their children be enthralled.

Walter brings the early life of Frederick Douglas to life in an engaging presentation that is sure to enlighten and delight young and old alike. Concert, “Still Hoping” with Maris Wicker and FriendsThis was a popular concert two years ago when she last performed at Dorchester Center for the Arts so we know you’ll enjoy this refreshed version. The group will perform both original and well known songs, and was formed by Maris from talented local musicians who enjoy combining their talents of singing and playing various instruments.

Instructor Bios

Robert’s profession is art and design. He is multi talented and has studied the fine arts of drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, and graphic design at various art schools across the country. Always keen to help others experience the joy that he hasfound in art, he particularly enjoys the beginning students and is always there to answer questions and help the student figure out the answers.

Robert Gladney

Diana Evans has been teaching watercolor technique for over 9 years. She enjoys painting landscapes, seascapes, flowers, and the wildlife of the Eastern Shore Diana enjoys teaching beginning students and encourages her students to request subjects thatare of interest to them.

Grace CavalieriGrace is an American poet, playwright and radio host of “The Poet and the Poem from the Library of Congress. In 2019 she was appointed the 10th Poet Laureate of Maryland. Grace has published 24 books and chapbooks of poetry, written and produced 26 plays and texts for 2 operas. She has co-founded or founded several publishing houses and presses and operates a small press where she is very active. She has most recently won an appropriation of $1,050,000 made available for the 13 most distinguished Poets Laureates in America. Find Grace at https://www.gracecavalieri.com/

Diana Evans

Jan BoettgerJan started by taking a glass class at DCA under the instruction of Bill Wise, a teacher at the center in the 80’s. When Bill retired, Jan continued to produce her sparkling images as well as teach the art of stained glass. Jan’s love for working in glass and teaching the craft shows in both her students’ work and her own. When asked Jan says, “My greatest joy over the years has been the variety of students I have taught and the pride these students have for the beautiful pieces they created.” Much of Jan’s work can be seen in various buildings around the shore.

John IamperiJohn is a visual artist interested in sharing the magical, very functional art form of screen painting. He is a member of the Baltimore Painted Screen Society and has traveled throughout Maryland teaching this 104-year-old folk art. In windows, screen doors, as wall hangings and as porch enclosures, John’s paintings are commissioned worldwide and exhibited in numerous venues. Find John’s work on YouTube and Facebook

Walter JonesWalter Jones is a musical storyteller, performing arts educator, certified special educator and children’s minister. He is a graduate of Yale University and Howard University Divinity School. He received training in special education and reading instruction from Goucher College and Towson University. Walter strongly believes that children are our future and that we should do our best to provide them with positive experiences that will not only educate them but also inspire them to strive for a brighter tomorrow.Find him on LinkedIn

Re-cycled furniture is Terri’s passion. Being able to save an old worn piece and turn it into a beautiful whimsical piece of furniture is her mission. She creates useful unique furniture made from various papers, dried leaves, foil and fabric and loves to share her knowledge and inspire whimsy within her students. Katie HurleyOutside of being the Visual Arts Coordinator for Dorchester Center for the Arts, Katie has a freelance Graphic Designer business. Her work encompasses branding, print design, web design and social media consultation. Maggii SarfatyMaggii Sarfaty studied fine art at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Growing up along the Chesapeake Bay of Maryland instilled a love of the water and all things coastal. In 1990 Maggii embarked on her career as a muralist and faux finisher with work featured in Women’s Day, Traditional Home and several regional publications. She works in watercolor, gauche and oil. Cheryl PriceCheryl is an active community member throughout Dorchester County. It is because of her enthusiasm and love of teaching; she is often seen with Girl Scouts enthusiastically trailing behind her. One of her passions is creating pysanky eggs. These Ukrainian crafted batik painted eggs are a specialty of Cheryl’s that she is happy to share with all.

Windy KarpavageWindy is a fiber artist and owner of Kaire’je Studios, a fiber arts retail business on Taylor’s Island that carries high quality and unusual fibers and materials. Windy is passionate about knitting and felting and is familiar with many fiber art forms. She has worked as a test knitter for a knitwear designer where she perfected fine finishing details. Maris WickerMaris is a Cambridge institution; always involved in helping others, or creating music wherever she goes. She started her music career in Baltimore singing with her father in various venues. She learned piano at an early age and has always been happy to share her talents with others. You can often find Maris at DCA hosting Open Mic on final Fridays where she has also performed on her own and with friends in concert.

Warren SaundersWarren is a master decoy carver born and raised on a farm in Dorchester County. Warren spent his early life studying waterfowl in their natural surroundings. Warren studied with noted carvers over the years and has become one of the noted experts in his craft. Heparticipates in exhibitions and shows throughout the eastern United States. He became an Open Class Carver over 22 years ago and was notified by the international Wood Carver’s Association congratulating him on being amongst the top 120 top carvers in the country. Barbara ZuehlkeBarbara Zuehlke is an award winning Eastern Shore artist. She works in various mediums from serigraph to oil, focusing primarily on watercolor. Using wet pigment on wet paper (wet on wet), Barbara creates a softness and flow that is exciting when combined with the sharp, clean edges of working on dry paper. ExhibitsExhibits change monthly in the Dorchester Center for the Arts galleries. We showcase all types of art from local and regional artists throughout the year.

JanuaryJanuary is our annual members exhibition. For details visit us online to download the application. The second Saturday Artists’ Reception and awards ceremony will be held Jan. 11 from 5-7:30pm. In conjunction with the annual members show we are honoring Dorchester Center for the Arts founder W. Robert Tolley with a retrospective of his work in the front gallery.

February February showcases the Baywater Camera Club’s members in their annual photography show. This show will be judged by the Maryland Photo Alliance of which Baywater Camera Club is member. The Second Saturday Artists’ Reception will be held on Feb. 8 from 5-7:30pm.

4. Credit card payments (MC, Visa, Amex, and Discover) are accepted in person or by phone. Call 410.228.7782.

Upon receipt of your registration and payment in full, you are registered. If the class is full or canceled (due to lack of enrollment), you will be notified. In either case, you will receive a full refund. Please enroll and make payment at least two weeks prior to the first class. Advance enrollment allows the instructor appropriate preparation and reduces the risk of cancellation.

Class Registration

Refund RequestsNo class or workshop refunds are given unless the Dorchester Center for the Arts is notified one week prior to the start of the class or workshop. For all cancellations there is a nonrefundable registration fee of $15. If you are ineligible for a refund, you may obtain an acknowledgment from the finance office which enables you to claim the unused tuition as a tax-deductible contribution.

AbsenteeismThe Dorchester Center for the Arts does not prorate the classes or provide refunds for missed classes. If an instructor is unable to attend the class, the class will be rescheduled. If a student is unable to attend the class, no refund or makeup class is available.

WeatherIf Dorchester County Schools are closed due to inclement weather, the Center is also closed. Check the local TV networks or radio stations for cancellations, or the Dorchester County Schools’ website. Classes cancelled due to inclement weather will be rescheduled. Please note: If the schools are closed due to inclement weather, DCA will be closed all day and night even if weather conditions improve.
