DOOSAN HEAVY INDUSTRIES & CONSTRUCTION
Enhancing the Value of the EarthAffordable and sustainable water supply is a key factor for the sustainable and continuous growth for the society and economy. 94% of
the entire globe’s water is in the ocean; converting seawater into fresh water is inevitable in water scarce regions. As of 2006, we are
supplying fresh water to the millions of people in the Middle East, giving them the true value of being on the globe.
Pioneer in Desalination TechnologiesDoosan is always striving for new and different ways of thinking and doing. In 1993, world witnessed that a plant as large as 100 MIGD
production capacity could be constructed safely when we got contracted and successfully accomplished Al-Shoaiba Ph.2. When the first
private investments were required, we helped client to win the project. When 24 months were common to build a large scaled MSF
desalination plant, we proved 12 months were enough. When a number of researchers claimed a hybrid would give more values to clients, we
simply built the first and largest hybrid plant in Fujairah.
Evolution, to be the Total Water Solution Provider We did not invent the MSF, but we dare to say that we have made it flourish. Around 40% of the fresh water desalted by MSF is produced
from Doosan distillers. As the global water treatment market evolves, we recognize the need to become diverse. Not one solution meets the
everchanging needs of our clients, so we are evolving and adapting to become a provider of many services and specialties. We are adding to
our business spectrum MED, RO and plant rehabilitation & retrofitting. From front end studies to value-added customer service, thermal to
membrane desalting, municipal water and industrial water to waste water treatment; Doosan is simply specialized in water solutions.
Adding more values to the Earth, Doosan
Water, being indispensable for the existence of humankind,
has become one of our most precious resources. We are
Doosan, one of the most competent players in the world
market making “life-giving water.” Doosan has turned sea
water into potable water for a thirsty land with its 475 MIGD
desalination plant and now Doosan is supplying a 194 MIGD
desalination plant to the world as of Dec. 2005. Doosan has
provided the most advanced solutions to supply highly
innovative and economical desalination plants through a
module evaporator and hybrid MSF-RO design.
Establishment of Doosan Hydro Technology reinforces the
RO/Water treatment capabilities and allows Doosan to
become a true total solution provider; having expertise with the most predominant desalination technologies ranging from MSF, MED, to
RO. “Management by Customer Satisfaction and Maximizing Client’s Values” This is our commitment which will guide Doosan through
the way to the future.

DOOSAN WATER PLANTS
DESALINATION PLANTS
Known for delivering advanced and reliable desalination facilities, Doosan is one of the few companies in the world that has proprietary
technologies for all three desalination types; Multi-Stage Flashing (MSF), Multi-Effect Distillation (MED), and Reverse Osmosis (RO).
Doosan is currently the best in the field of MSF desalination with a global market share of over 40%. Our proficiency in desalination
technologies and our expertise with our innovative hybrid system fulfill the critical demand in the Middle East. The hybrid system results
in operational improvements in plant efficiency, output, and cost-effectiveness.
We are currently building an 1,030,000m3/day desalination plant in Shuaibah, Saudi Arabia. Upon completion, it will be the world’s
largest facility of its kind. This water and the combined cycle power plant will serve three million people in the sacred city of Mecca and
the surrounding areas.

MSF PROCESS
07
MSF (Multi Stage Flash)
MSF is famous for its robustness and reliability as shown for the last 40 years. Commanding
around 80% of the seawater desalination, MSF has been a major fresh water resource in
Middle East. Also, its large unit capacity simplifies the layout of the plant as well as the
operation and maintenance. Up to 20 MIGD of the unit production capacity in the moment,
Doosan MSF are becoming land marks in your country. Doosan is building and securing the
safe, affordable and sustainable water supply for the people in needs.

MED PROCESS
DOOSAN WATER PLANTS
Multi Effect Distillation
MED is no longer considered as only suitable for small and medium water production plants. With advanced technologies in scale
control and material selection, MED is now playing a major role in larger seawater desalination plants.
MED is inherently superior in economy with its low electricity consumption and allows easy operation at relatively lower cost. The
minimum losses of the system contribute to higher production per unit input of heat to the plant.
In order to meet the diverse needs of the market, Doosan expanded its own capabilities in MED technology. As our track record
clearly shows, Doosan has successfully contributed to the development of MED technology and the overall MED desalination market.
Although Doosan started with a small MED unit, with the future demand for higher growth together with our determination and
experience, we are poised to meet the future demands of the growing MED desalination market for larger units.

RO PROCESS
DOOSAN WATER PLANTS
RO Process
RO process is a technology that applies pressure to reverse osmosis membranes in order to extract salinity from sea water, creating
desalinated water. RO is the most widely adopted desalination technology which can be characterized by using pressure, not usingsteam which is required for Thermal desalination process such as MSF and MED. RO technology has a broader range of use beyond
desalination such as water and waste water treatment and reuse system. Doosan has already gained experience in design and
construction of large scale RO plants by completing a hybrid (MSF + RO) plant in Fujairah of UAE. Currently, Doosan is commissioning
Shuaibah Expansion SWRO plant (33 MIGD) and constructing Jeddah SWRO phase 3 plant (52.8 MIGD) in Jeddah of Saudi Arabia and
Shuwaikh SWRO plant (30 MIGD) in Kuwait. Shuaibah Expansion SWRO plant will be completed in 2009, Shuwaikh SWRO plant in
2010, and Jeddah SWRO phase 3 plant in 2012.

HYBRID PROCESS
DOOSAN HEAVY INDUSTRIES & CONSTRUCTION
Hybrid Process
Hybrid plant mixed with different desalting processes has better performance, higher efficiency and lower costs.
Hybrid processes have
Balanced use of thermal and electrical energy,
Flexibility to the water and electricity demand,
Combined advantages of thermal and SWRO by blending high quality distillate with SWRO product.
In Fujairah plant, hybrid desalination process as MSF+RO type is constructed and operated successfully.
Total capacity 100 MIGD (MSF 62.5 MIGD+ SWRO 37.5 MIGD)
Fujairah plant can actively cover the seasonal variation of water products due to operating flexibility of RO plant

WATER TREATMENT PLANTS
DOOSAN WATER PLANTS
Doosan’s water treatment business covers water, wastewater, and water reuse areas, where design, procurement, and construction
services are provided. Water reuse systems applying membrane technologies are mainly focused in our business portfolio. We have
accumulated membrane technologies by building large-sized UF and RO plants.
Water treatment technologies aim to produce safe drinking water by achieving complete removal of microorganisms. Advanced
treatment technologies such as UV, Ozone, MF, UF, and RO are applied to establish quality-assured systems. Advanced technologies
are highlighted in wastewater treatments as well. We are applying state-of-the art technologies capable of raising treated effluent
quality suitable for industrial, agricultural and even potable use. For example, Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) technology converts
domestic wastewater into recycled water meeting water quality standards for industrial and agricultural uses. Further, addition of
disinfection and RO processes elevates the treated effluent quality up to drinking water level.
We enhanced our advanced water treatment capability by acquiring Doosan Hydro Technology (DHT) that has abundant experiences
in advanced water business including the membrane technology in 2006. In 2008, we allied with Carollo Engineers which is the
largest engineering company in water and wastewater area in the US. Not one solution meets the ever-changing needs of our clients,
so we will evolve by continuously developing new technologies to become a total water solution provider.
