Power and Water for Tomorrow is one of our mottos and with the shipment this month of the first unit of four “Made in Vietnam” desalination evaporators for Yanbu 3 in Saudi Ara-

bia, the ground breaking for the Vinh Tan 4 power plant in Viet-nam and the recent announcement of Doosan Vina’s ASME cer-tification as a nuclear equipment supplier those words are more than just a hope they are reality! You can read more on the ASME story in our last issue and for more on the Water Shipment or the VT4 groundbreaking simply read on. The desalination unit was the size of a football pitch, weighed a massive 4,500 tons and will produce 95 million liters of fresh water per day, which will supply the daily needs of more than a quarter million people. For details see page 06. We also had a super VIP visit from YS Park, Former Chairman of the Doosan Group and current Chairman of Doosan Heavy In-dustries and Construction, and the visionary who is responsible for the $300 M investment that is now Doosan Heavy Industries Vietnam. He visits as often as possible to review the progress of his dream and you can read the complete story on page 03. Another fantastic event that is featured in this issue is the Fourth Annual One Mind Festival. This year 2,700 employees and guests had a day of fun and teambuilding at the company complex. The sport field was transformed into the festival grounds to accom-modate the event. During the day there was some serious foot-ball and volleyball matches, hours of wild and crazy games plus a grand stage performance by a dozen finalists in the annual tal-ent show, plus many lucky draws that saw thousands of dollars’ worth of prizes given away. Full coverage of the OMF is on page 12 and as always we welcome your comments or ideas. Remember if you’ve missed any of the issues you can always view them online at issuu.com under Doosan Vina and for vid-eo coverage of all the events at Doosan Vina open YouTube and search under Doosan Vina DVTV.

YS Park VisitsPark Yong Sung, the visionary former Chairman

of the Doosan Group and current Chairman of Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction. He

is the person generally attributed with being the “Father” of Doosan Vina and he visited his growing offspring in March. Since conceiving the plan and launching the company YS Park has made it a priority to visit as often as his schedule permits which unfor-tunately it’s not as often as we’d like. His time constraints are so intense because in ad-dition to nurturing Doosan Vina and Chung Ang Uni-versity in Seoul he is also President of the Korean Olympic Committee which is deeply involved in the preparations for the 2018 Winter Olympics to be held in Pyeongchang, South Korea in February 2018 be-tween the 9th and 25th. Park’s visit to Vietnam was timed to the minute and organized to maximize effect that allowed time to review progress, tour the facility and meet with em-ployees. He was welcomed by Ryu Hang Ha - Senior Vice Pres-ident, Kim Yong Soo - Vice President, Kim Gwang Ju, Director of Management and Human Resources and other members of Doosan Vina’s Board. In spite of an extremely tight schedule Park took time to tour the 110 hectare complex to meet employees and stress the importance of safety and a clean environment. During his stay, Park said he was especially pleased with recent achievements and specifically with

Doosan Vina’s successful certification as an ASME nu-clear equipment supplier. He also mentioned that he’s looking forward to returning again soon to celebrate even more success with his friends and colleagues here at Doosan Vina.

MEET THE TEAM

Every journey begins with a critical first step and a products first step is design. Every product must go

through the design phase in order to assure that safety, form and function meet customer requirements and qual-

ity standards. To achieve that the design needs to be as perfect as possible because as with any journey if the first step is correct the steps that follow will lead you to the correct destination.

Inaugurated in October 2012, the Doosan Vina Design Division now has 97 highly skilled designers, engineers and technicians who are responsible for designing the products made by the Boiler and the Material Handling Systems shops (MHS). To meet the needs of the two shops, the Design Division is cur-rently divided into three departments, Steel Struc-ture Design, Pressure Part Design and Duct Design.

Steel Structure

Design Leads the Way

The Steel Structure Design Department has four sec-tions: Cranes, Tekla, Stress Analysis and Detail. The Crane Section is responsible for designing MHS’s products like Rubber Tired Gantry Cranes, Rail Mount-ed Quayside Cranes and Rail Mounted Gantry Cranes. In addition this section also supplies drawings, techni-cal requirements, material requirements and material characteristics for other projects.

The Tekla section gets its name from the sophisticat-ed cutting edge software they use named Tekla. They use the program to design structural steel buildings to house and support the massive boilers made in the Boiler shop for a power plant. The Stress Analysis and Detail sections are both in-volved in stress analysis and design for steel structures for power plants. They are also involved as technical advisors for fabrication and site erection solutions.

The Pressure Parts Design Department has two sec-tions: Pressure and Non-pressure. The Non-Pressure section is responsible for design-ing parts that don’t operate under pressure such as Buckstays, Hangers, Casings and Brils, while the Pres-sure section is responsible for the design of Coils, Panels, Headers and Links for a boiler.

The Duct Design Department now has the Stress Analysis Section and the Detail Section. These two sections draw the detail of piping systems for boiler projects such as those we’ve done or are being done for Tripoli, Libya and Kudgi. “Design is a job that requires in-depth knowledge and extreme attention to detail, we must be meticu-lous and uncompromising in our work. All of us in the Design division are aware of the critical nature and importance of the work we are doing, so every mem-ber in our division is always eager to explore, learn, gain more experience and innovate so that we are not only producing the best products but also grow-ing professionally and improving our skills,” Nguyen Van Thanh, Assistant Manager said.

Fourth Annual One Mind val

Ryu Hang Ha, Senior Vice President & CEO of Doosan Vina en-

couraged all to have a safe and fun filled day

as he kicked off the event and opened the

Festival.

VIP’s from Quang Ngai and Doosan Vina declare the Festival open.

At 7:30 AM on April 5th the company’s sport field came alive to signal the opening

of Doosan Vina’s

4th annual “One Mind Festival.” The scale of pag-eantry that the teams had prepared for the open-ing was worthy of an Olympiad and employees and guests were excited and eager for things to get un-derway. The One Mind Festival or OMF is a companywide team building event that involves all 2,400 employ-ees and this year’s event built on prior year’s suc-cess and alumni of previous festivals were antici-pating a fantastic fun filled day. The annual festival gives employees an opportunity to have some fun,

grow as a dynamic and unified force in Heavy In-dustry as well as having a chance to meet a few celebrities. The festival began with a series of games and sporting events that lasted throughout the morn-ing and into the afternoon. When the sun set the focus shifted to a stage that was brought in spe-

cial for the festival that was complete with concert grade lighting, sound systems and special effects. The OMF is one of many programs at the company designed to give employees a healthy balance be-tween work and family life. It is also a time for com-radelier and an opportunity for the company to say “thanks” for the hard work last year. The more than two billion Dong festival created a level of synergy that could not be achieved while working so the team building was an important part of the event and provided a platform to promote strong bonds that will help employees grow person-ally and professionally.

Page 15: Doosan Vina News V6N2 - English

The theme for the 4th annual festival was “Let’s go! Doosan Way!” This was to focus employee atten-tion on the impor-tance of the global Doosan Way pro-gram that was launched last year to all of Doosan’s

37,000 employees worldwide. The April 5th festival took place at the company’s 110 hectare Quang Ngai complex with all 2,700 em-ployees and more than 300 guests from government agencies, clients, partners, the local community and the families of employees joining in. Highlights of the festival’s sport section included a Vietnamese-Korean football match, wrestling, vol-leyball and the championship round of the Doosan Vina Football Cup. The grand finale of the festival was the talent show where a dozen employee groups performed a vari-ety of acts vying for the title of “Doosan Vina Star Performers.” Throughout the day employees had a chance to win spectacular pries in twenty lucky draws. The

prizes included LG TV’s, Sanyo refrigerators and the grand prize of the event was a Honda Wave Alpha won by Nguyen Huu Khoi of NDE/CPE in drawn at the conclusion of the festivities. Winners of the Games were HRSG & Design.

In the sport category events the winners

were: The Football Cup was won by the Water shop, CPE took the Vol-leyball trophy and for

the second year in a row IT won the

entertainment category.

EDUCATION

HRSG’s BBHD Training Da Nang Foreign Language and HCM Eco-nomic & Law University Interns

The Bang Byol Hoal Dong (BBHD) program encourag-es employees to find creative and innovative ways to increase production, eliminate waste, improve qual-ity and enhance safety. To upgrade the skills and train the trainers HRD hosted a BBHD training course for 19 HRSG Theme Leaders in March and April. The course covered nine topics: The BBHD process, Brainstorming, The 5S’s, One Point Lessons, Visual Management, Fool Proof, Eight types of waste, Meet-ing leadership skills and The 4M’s & 5W’s.

Since opening five years ago Doosan Vina has hosted thousands of students from Universities, Colleges and Vocational Schools all across Vietnam. Most recently ten students from The Da Nang University of Foreign Languages and three from The Ho Chi Minh Univer-sity of Law and Economics came for an internship. The internship for the students from Da Nang who were majoring in Korean lasted from March 3rd to April 27th 2014. This was a great opportunity for stu-dents to work with native speakers in a Korean com-pany. The three HCM students were IT majors and worked with our IT department to get hands on expe-rience with cutting-edge hardware and software.

The HRD Department also held an orientation course from March 24th to April 1st for 39 new employees to help them assimilate quickly and easily into their new environment. The training program combined theory and practice that gave the new staff a look of the Doosan Way and allowed them to connect and bond with colleagues in a neutral environment. Led by a team of experienced internal teachers and staff, barriers came down and they quickly learned to cooperate and work together on a variety of team-building and learning activities.

On March 19th, the Education Division held a Men-torship Closing Ceremony for 77 pairs of Mentors and Mentees. The mentorship training began in Septem-ber 2013 and the mentees spent six months being trained by their mentor. Eight pairs who had been recognized for their excel-lence were evaluated and from those the “Best Pair” was selected to do a presentation. The lucky team was Huynh Ngoc Tien (Mentor) and Nguyen Minh Thanh (Mentee) of the PSD Division. “Mentoring is a very useful program, which helps us to integrate into a new work environment and cul-ture. The program was especially helpful because this all very new and strange so the information and expo-sure gives us a foundation basis to build our careers on,” said Nguyen Minh Thanh.

20 DOOSAN VINA NEWS- QUANG NGAI, VIETNAM

International Women’s Day at Doosan VinaBecause International Women’s Day is second

only to wedding anniversaries in relation to maintaining a happy home, Vietnamese men

who are wise mark March 8th on the calendar as a day that is not to be forgotten. And in the spirit of keeping the ladies happy at work the Public Relations & Communications Department established the tradition of honoring the company’s women employees to recognize their achievements with a special celebration. This year marked the fourth annual International Women’s Day Celebra-tion at Doosan Vina and with each passing year we’ve

seen the event gain momentum and support from other departments and clubs. This year we had more than 250 women employ-ees attend and they certainly came prepared to have some fun. When they arrived at the main office from the five shops and support divisions the first thing the ladies saw was a huge backdrop to celebrate the day. The program was held in the lobby of the Main Of-fice and featured serenades by the men of the Music Club, Gifts, Games, prizes and thanks from the lead-ers of the company. Speaking on behalf of the compa-ny was Director of Education, Park Seung Won, who thanked the ladies for their outstanding contributions and dedication to the company. The highlight of the event is always the game por-tion and this year the game was “Find the Ducks.” Five women were selected and taken away to be blindfolded. Unbeknownst to them their husbands had been secretly recruited for the game and doz-ens of rubber ducks were hidden on the men. The object of the game was for the blindfolded women

to find more ducks on the mystery man (they didn’t know it was their husband) than the other ladies in 60 seconds. The resulting search by the ladies had the audience in stitches as the ladies were torn between wanting to win the prizes and being too familiar with their mystery man. Interspersed between the entertainment, speeches and games “lucky draws” were held and at the end of the event a cake was brought out and all ladies received a piece of cake, a bouquet of flowers and a special gift to mark the occasion and most important-ly, to be sure that they knew exactly how much their hard work was appreciated.

MARRIED & WORKING TOGETHER

A Labor of LoveWhat do you think it would be like if both

you and your spouse worked for the same company? Do you think working together

would be a plus or a minus? Would it nurture the re-lationship or be too much of a good thing? To answer this question we decided to explore the is-sue with some of the 43 married couples at Doosan Vina where both husband and wife work at the com-pany and who incidentally, represent 4% of our work-force. Dynamite is a popular way of saying how great some-thing is and when you take the first names of one of our married couples, Tran Khac Tuyen of OE and his wife Nguyen Thi Tam from Accounting you get Tuyen “n” Tam, or TNT which is as they say is “Dynamite!” Tuyen is from Ha Nam Province, which is more than a 1,000 kilometers north of Doosan Vina and Tam’s home is here in Central Vietnam’s Quang Ngai Prov- ince where Doosan Vina is located. Tuyen has worked

at Doosan Vina for almost five years and Tam will cele-brate four years in September. “TNT” met at a friend’s wedding, Tuyen was on the bus to the wedding when he spotted a beautiful lady. He knew he had only a short while to impress her and so he pulled out all the stops and grabbed the seat next to her at the party, one which he has now happily continued to occupy at all parties since. When we asked Tuyen whether working together was good or bad he said, “Our two departments are quite close and we see each other rather often. It is a great benefit to have Tam so near; we can share things instantly and not have to wait until evening. Since our wedding last year and moving into Van Tuong Nguyen Thi Thuy and Pham Thanh Hung of Boiler shop

(Doosan Vina’s married couple’s apartment complex) I think our relationship has blossomed, she is not only my wife, but also my best friend. We share everything and it has been great, that’s not to say there are never any disagreements, but that is just a part of life and love is the glue that gets us through it all.” Another of our couples; Bui Xuan Truong of Ma-terial Handling Systems and Le Thi Huyen Trang who works in the Public Relations & Communications De-partment were drawn together at birth, not theirs, but that of a mutual friend at Dalat University who invited them both to her birthday party in 2006. As chance would have it they met and fell madly in love. Truong came to work at Doosan Vina in May of 2008 when he graduated and Trang followed later in 2010 after finishing school and spending a year working for another company. The couple married in 2012 and a daughter joined the family in 2013. “No matter how much you are in love one still needs to respect the other, everyone needs to have time and space for themselves, it’s not good for a relationship to exclude everything else, we feel it’s important to reserve time for friends or doing things that we may like that the other doesn’t; and that’s OK, it healthy and good for the marriage,” said Truong. “Our plan is to save so we can one day own our own home, car… We know that it is going to require a lot of hard work and patience, but anything worth having is worth the wait!” Trang added, “Working at the same company allows us more family time and also gives us a better understanding of what the oth-er is experiencing in their career, which makes for a smoother relationship.” Our final couple is Pham Thanh Hung and Nguyen Thi Thuy, they both work in the Boiler Shop and met here at the company. Thuy was on an internship program with Da Nang University of Foreign Languages and

came to Doosan Vina expecting to gain some ex-perience, but not necessarily one that would prove to be life chang-ing. Cu-p i d has in-deed been busy at Doosan Vina and by all indications he still lurks in the halls and shops all across our 110 h e c t a r e c o m p l e x , waiting and w a t c h i n g for unsus-p e c t i n g couples to work his magic on. The next chapter in this story is waiting to be writ-ten and will happen when the first offspring from one of these couples grows up and joins the Doosan Vina family as a second generation employee, continuing the tradition started by his or her parents!
