The next round of census data was released last week, which focused on the age and sex of the popula-tion. While it’s no surprise that all townships and the village of Hilton Beach have more older people than young, it is perhaps somewhat surprising that this is the trend Canada-wide with 5.9 million Canadians aged 65 and older, compared to 5.8 million Canadians aged 14 or younger. This is the first time in history those aged 65 and older have outnumbered those aged 14 and younger. Good news for everyone, as anyone who reads this and even those who don’t: the population segment with the highest percentage increase in Canada’s is centenarians, those over the age of 100. There are now 8,320 people in

Canada over the age of 100 (a 41.3% increase).While there are no year round centenarian residents, there are several people over the age of 90 still calling St. Joseph Island their primary residence.

For those who’s 90th birthday is a long ways away, you may be surprised to learn overall there are 215 is-land-wide year round residents under the age of 14. We would guess lots of summer residents also bring their children as well. While much of the census information does focus on older people, in no township nor village do seniors make up more than 40% of the population. Still, they are all more than double the

The Art of Stillness; The Adventures in Going NowhereWritten by Pico IyerPublished by TED Books, Simon &Schuster (2014)(73 pages)

“The Art of Stillness” had been on my own “to-buy” wish list so was very pleased to see it at the library. Pico Iyer is a celebrated author best known for his travel writing – in fact he has spent his life traveling the world and writing about it.

This book is entirely different. He begins his story by telling of his visit to a monk, who is living a simple existence high in the mountains. The monk, as it turns out, is Leonard Cohen.

Iyer interviews many such individuals and the take away message often is “In an age of constant movement, nothing is more urgent than sitting still”. I suspect for many, including myself, learn-ing how to “sit still” is easier said than done. In the “Art of Stillness” Iyer reports on the brain changes and the relationship between stillness, happiness, positive emotions and creativity. He also provides “how to” strategies.

Iyer does not behoove travelling and learning of other peoples and cultures. What he does try to encourage, however, is that it is equally important to learn how to be still. That it is within stillness that our humanity, our empathy grows.

This great little book can easily be read in a few hours, as it was designed to do. Beyond the lesson and strategies in the book – the Luna Einarsdottir’s photographs are wonderful.

BUTTERTART BBQ RUB

This is great for chicken, ribs and pork …. Makes 1 cup

½ cup kosher salt 1 tsp sweet paprika¼ cup brown sugar 1 tsp ground cumin2 tsp garlic powder1 tsp dried mustard powder1 tsp onion powder 1 tsp cinnamon1 tsp chili powder ¾ tsp black pepper

Combine all ingredients. Before applying the rub, coat your meat with Dijon or yellow mustard, just like the pros, then sprinkle rub all over and bbq as desired.

Keep this rub in an airtight glass jar for a maximum of 6 months. REMEMBER TO LABEL THE JAR!

BUTTERTART BBQ SAUCE

1 head garlic 1 Tbsp buttertart BBQ Rub½ cup brown sugar, packed juice of ¼ lemon¼ cup butter 1/8 tsp nutmeg¼ cup water

Preheat oven to 350 deg. FBake the whole head of garlic (in its skin) on a cookie sheet for half an hour. Cool then peel and chop about 10 cloves, more if you like.

In a saucepan on medium to high heat, melt the sugar and butter. Add the re-maining ingredients, stir, and bring to a boil for 5 minutes. Reduce the heat, sim-mer for 5 minutes, and stir occasionally. Let cool.

Use to glaze chicken, ribs, or pork in the final stages of cooking.

Clippings Note: We try to make most of the recipes Susan graciously provides us and after mentioning our thoughts to her she suggested we include this brief review.

We ended up making this the other evening and there was lots of extra rub for future grilling. First we put it on chicken breasts... It almost tasted like Butter Chicken. Very familiar, but a little different at the same time. I wouldn’t have known there was mustard on it if I hadn’t put it on. It was also the first time we cooked garlic whole, it certainly made peeling easy,.. Next time we’ll have to try it on pork chops and ribs.. Several days later we did try it on pork loin and again it was fantastic! For the loins, I cooked them entirely on the BBQ then coated them in sauce and put in the oven for 5-10 minutes to avoid burning the sauce. (and having a messy grill to clean). Final note: a RIB recipe will be inlcuded next week which uses this great sauce!

St. Joseph township has 610 males to 630 females. Hil-ton, Jocelyn, and The Village of Hilton Beach all have more male residents than female, which is unusual both because the overall population of Canada has more women than men and because women tend to live longer than men as well.

Keep in mind these figures are all from the forms we filled out in 2016. Unfortunately, some of these people counted have passed away, but some new people have been born as well. Some have moved away, and some like ourselves have unofficially added to the popula-tion at least until the next census rolls around. Besides age and sex, household types and size figures were also released. It should come as no surprise almost all resi-dents here live in detached homes (plus a few in low rise apartments). The average sized household is just over 2.1 people per household.

White sucker fish

If you’re passing by the I Line creek anytime soon, take a look and you’ll likely see dozens, maybe hun-dreds of these guys in the shallow waters! This past weekend we received a tip that they were all over the creek just down the street from us. After 2 seconds looking we were not disappointed, as they were liter-ally jumping right out of the water as we passed by!

When the water temperature is above 40°, the white sucker ascends streams to spawn in clear flowing streams, in gravelly and stony areas, like the creek. Once they have finished spawning, they will return to calmer waters so if you want to check them out head out soon. Adult suckers may live to be more than 15 years of age and return to spawn to the same spot annually throughout their life.

Suckers are bottom feeders and can survive in fairly polluted waters. They suck up all sorts of creatures that they find on the bottom, including insects (mainly insect larvae), crustaceans, molluscs (snails and small clams) and annelids (worms and leeches). Suckers “hoover” up their food and swallow it, they have no teeth, just really big voluptuous lips. They

The St. Joseph Island Branch of the Canadian Cancer Society is pleased to announce the forma-tion of Team ISLAND HEART & SOLE to par-ticipate in the Relay for Life being held on June 16, 2017 in Sault Ste. Marie at the John Rhodes Community Centre. We are honouring Barb Gajda, an ‘Island’ resident, who is battling breast cancer. Barb is the mother of Brent Ralph who is also battling cancer. Barb is a huge supporter of her son. Their story was published in the April 13, 2017 edition of Sault This Week. Brent and Barb are this year’s Honorary Survivors for Sault Ste. Marie’s Relay for Life.

You can support Team ISLAND HEART & SOLE in either one of two ways: 1) By making a donation to the Team online or by joining the Team. Some members of our Island Branch will also have pledge sheets for donations; 2) By supporting our Island Branch fundraising ‘project’. When sold as food they are often referred to as “Mullet”. Because that sounds so much more appetizing.

Xplornet Communications, in accordance with its obligations under the Radiocommunications Act and Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) procedure CPC-2-0-03 (2014), hereby notifies the residents in the vicinity of Base Line and Hilton Road, Hilton Beach, of its intentions to develop a Communication Tower at the location shown here consisting of : A 45-metre lattice tri-pole internet communication tower An equipment shelter at the base, and perimeter security fencing The purpose of the proposed tower is to provide infrastructure to improve wireless Internet broadband services in the immediate area.
