Three years after the Government made its fi rst announcement, on 5th April it became illegal to own a dog which hasn’t been microchipped. Owners in Nottinghamshire are being warned that they could face a fi ne of up to £500 if they do not comply with the new rules. Government fi gures reveal that more than 100,000 dogs are dumped or lost nationally each year, at a cost of £57m to the taxpayer and welfare charities. But over half of stray dogs cannot be returned because their owners cannot be found or identifi ed, leading to around 6,000 dogs are put down annually.
