Located along the Leyte Gulf coastline, Barangay Tingib in Basey, Samar was close to the central trail of destruction wrought by Typhoon Yolanda . Inside the Barangay Tingib Elementary School, Analiza Bermudo lay huddled together with four of her six children. “I was afraid. It was really the first time I had experienced something like that. I thought there would be nothing left,” Analiza later recalled. Thankfully, all five would weather the storm, shaken but unscathed.

Emerging from the evacuation center, Analiza saw that her low-lying house had been destroyed, but not completely washed away by the storm surge. “I thought to myself, ‘Who would fix the house?’ After a pause, Analiza added, “At least we had something to start rebuilding with.”

This was not the first time that Analiza had to rebuild her life and her home. In fact, for the 47-year old fisherwoman, Yolanda was just one of many tragedies inflicted on her unfortunate family.

A mother’s

Analiza had always been a fisherwoman. She had her own baloto or canoe for fishing. Her husband, William, was a jeepney driver in Tacloban, and, together, they were able to bring in enough food and income for their growing family.

It was in 1992 when the first of many disasters struck the Bermudo household. Shortly after giving birth, doctors diagnosed her newborn Ralph as having a critical medical condition that required him to be treated at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) in Manila. Desperate to keep her baby alive, Analiza decided to sell off her baloto, the very source of her livelihood, in order to pay for their airfare. Ralph eventually got better but in later years, he was diagnosed as having a mental disorder. Today, at 22, Ralph has the mental maturity of a five-year old. He would frequently throw fits of tantrums.

Ralph’s condition was something that the strong-willed Analiza could cope with. It was her husband, William, and his many infidelities that almost broke the woman’s spirit in half. In 2001, while she was pregnant with her sixth child, William abandoned the family for a new life in Tacloban. In sparse detail, Analiza recalled how William had run off with one of the many mistresses he had acquired as a jeepney driver. The couple had always had a rocky relationship, but his disappearance came at the worst possible period.

Based on the Area Development Plan, ALKFI has identified certain sectors to implement the recommended projects. These include: school building, school development, fishing boat building, fishing gear provision, fishing market chain development, banig weaving development, eco-tourism, agriculture, housing, patrol boat provision, and passenger boat provision. The following are the updates that ALKFI has made as of July 31, 2014, in these areas.

As of July 31, 2014 ALKFI has spent Php 215,910,539.75 in delivering relief to various Typhoon Yolanda affected areas and rehabilitation services to the municipalities of Dulag in Leyte and Basey, Sta. Rita, Marabut in Samar and other areas across Eastern and Western Visayas and Palawan.

EDUCATION School Development (Programa Genio)

Analiza had no time to come to terms with the sudden separation. While her husband was away enjoying a new life and a new woman, she was left with five hungry mouths to feed, plus another one on the way. With no one else to turn to, she had no choice but to continue setting out to sea in her delicate condition. In the face of these struggles, Analiza pushed herself to do all that she could for her kids.

In 2013, after typhoon Yolanda destroyed her home Analiza once again felt a great despair. Little did she know that after the storm, a blessing for her

family is in the horizon.

In April 2014, Analiza was hand-picked to receive a motorized fiberglass fishing boat from the ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation Inc. (ALKFI) as part of the foundation’s rehabilitation program for Yolanda-hit areas. When asked how she felt about this, she responded with much thanksgiving and a few choked-back tears. “With my own motorboat, I can keep fishing any time of the day. I can even bring my kids to school in the mornings whenever I come back from the sea!” she exclaimed with pride.

More than six months after Yolanda, Analiza had managed to rebuild her modest home. She had even been able to setup a small vegetable garden in her backyard to supplement the family’s diet. Most of all, Analiza looks forward to setting out to sea each day to support her family.

Analiza is just one of more than a thousand recipients of motorboats and fishing gears from ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation Inc. in several municipalities across Leyte and Samar.

Every day, our teams work side by side with the local people to continue to build back better. Seeing the progress brought about by our efforts in partnership with the resilient people in Yolanda

affected areas has made our experience of helping a rewarding endeavor.

All of this would not have been possible without your donations which make us capable of implementing interventions that engage communities, provide real value, and restore life to people

that so badly need it.

On behalf of the survivors, our team, and the Filipino people, we thank you!
