It is my pleasure to introduce the 2015 Henley Business School Donor Report, and to thank you for the contribution you are making to the future of business education here at Henley. This year’s report reflects the impact of your generosity.

This year we celebrate 70 Years as an institution. 70 Years of helping individuals and organisations around the world excel in ever more challenging times. I am proud that the values and principles that were established in 1945, including personal development, ethical leadership and an international perspective, remain as relevant and powerful today as they have always been.

Your support ensures that Henley remains one of the very best business schools in Europe and worldwide.

Henley Business School continues to promote a diverse and inclusive learning environment – welcoming students from around the world to develop future business professionals and leaders. This would not be possible without the generosity of donors to the Henley Alumni Fund, which helps to ensure future generations of students continue to thrive here at Henley and beyond.

This past year the Henley Alumni Fund made possible the award of eight bursaries to self-funded MBA students and three Hardship Fund Grants. We are proud to be able to offer this extra hardship support to students across the Business School.

Contributions to the Henley Alumni Fund through the Graduating Class Gift continue to grow, with an increase of 35% over last year in the amount raised, and almost 20% of graduates choosing to give.

Thank you for your continued support; we look forward to being able to demonstrate greater impact next year and beyond.

Supporting studentsThe generous support of Henley’s Pioneers and Friends enables the Henley Alumni Fund to offer the opportunity to all students to fully embrace the Henley experience, regardless of their financial circumstances.

Henley Hardship FundProviding grants to students in unexpected financial difficulties, who would not otherwise be able to complete their courses, the Hardship Fund removes the associated mental burden and empowers students to fully concentrate on their studies. The growing group of donors committed to supporting business education at Henley meant that in 2014/15, the Henley Hardship Fund was opened up to all Henley students on all programmes.

Henley Alumni BursariesThe Henley Alumni Bursaries are designed to create a wider impact on society through the funding of students who would not otherwise be able to afford the cost of studying for their MBA at Henley.

The Bursary’s criteria mean that applicants must illustrate how the experience and knowledge gathered through their MBA studies will allow them to create a positive impact within their community.

Developing futures, togetherThe Henley Alumni Fund embodies the philosophy of collective philanthropy. By supporting Henley our alumni are not only supporting current and future students, but a centre for world class research, teaching and learning.

Henley TelethonSince February this year, a number of Henley alumni from all programmes have started giving in response to our inaugural annual telephone campaign. Over £34,500 has been pledged to support the Henley Alumni Fund, and from the conversations had with the student callers, it is clear that Henley continues to have a profound impact on the lives of our alumni.

Graduating Class Gift (MBA)An annual campaign first launched in 2012, the Graduating Class Gift provides graduating MBAs the opportunity to come together and demonstrate their commitment to business education at Henley.

Thanks to the generosity of the Class of 2014 more than £20,000 was donated to support the Henley Alumni Fund, creating an immediate impact on current and future students.

Five of these graduates benefited from the Henley Alumni Fund themselves, and they have all chosen to support their Graduating Class Gift.

Corporate collaboration

Henley Business School has a long tradition of working with the corporate world, and that will continue to be of ever increasing importance in the years ahead, reflecting Henley’s practical approach to a business education.

Our December 2014 ranking in the top 10% by the Research Excellence Framework (REP) for internationally excellent and world-leading research reflects Henley’s 70 year history of producing academically rigorous work that resonates fully with industry leaders. We are grateful for the visionary support of organisations such as Deloitte, who recently funded research that explored the link between corporate tax and corporate reputation.

Sponsorship of competitions and events are also key ways in which businesses are helping us to create the business leaders and professionals of tomorrow. The legal firm Pitmans has been instrumental in the launch of the annual Ideafest competition, with the winners having the opportunity to gain priceless mentoring with a view to developing their ideas commercially. Similarly, Santander supports our Summer Start-Up Boot camp at the Centre for Entrepreneurship, now in its third year, which is open to students and alumni interested in starting up their own business.

Thomson Reuters plays an integral role in the world class teaching and learning facilities of the ICMA Centre through their provision of all three dealing rooms equipped with Eikon, their flagship product. Because of their ongoing support, Henley Business School has the most extensive non-investment bank dealing room facilities in the world.

Corporations and the Henley Business School continue to be natural partners, and we are inspired by the enduring support provided by the business community.

Reading Real Estate Foundation

The Reading Real Estate Foundation (RREF) is a unique and forward thinking educational charity, with a global reach.

Established to support real estate and planning education at Henley Business School, it fulfills its mission by engaging and financially supporting students. RREF and its donors are building futures, together.

Supported by individuals and corporate donors, RREF works to develop top level, industry-ready graduates through activities such as the Careers Fair, the Evening Lecture series and the Mentoring Programme.

RREF bursaries, scholarships, hardship grants and awards, along with research funding, enhance the Henley experience for all.

Additional opportunities for less connected students are provided by the RREF Access Internship Scheme. Addressing ‘fair access to the profession’ the Scheme helps to overcome obstacles to participation in the industry.

Pathways to PropertyEstablished in 2012 by RREF, Pathways to Property is an initiative that aims to widen access to the real estate profession by raising awareness of real estate as a subject of study amongst academically able pupils from disadvantaged and under-represented backgrounds.

Supported by 23 firms and over 70 industry volunteers, Pathways to Property continues to engage schools across the UK. The impact of this work has been raised awareness of the industry, as well as the creation of a richer pool of talent, from which the industry can benefit.

The Alumni Relations and Development Advisory Board

As Chair of the Alumni Relations and Development Advisory Board, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support of the Henley Business School.

Alumni can play an important role in enhancing the Henley experience for future, current and past students, through financial support or by volunteering skills, knowledge and expertise. This support from alumni can have a profound impact not only on Henley, but on communities worldwide.

The aim of the Board is to help shape and inform the Business School’s future alumni relations and fundraising activities. Over the last year the Board has played an important role in the development of the new alumni relations offering; has ensured the Board provides better representation from all study programmes, by inviting new members; and has created both a Development Committee and Events Committee, for Special Interest Groups and Alumni Groups in the UK.

On a personal note, I was delighted about how responsive alumni were to the first Henley telephone campaign in support of the Henley Alumni Fund. It is vital that alumni from all programmes at Henley are contributing and supporting all Henley students.
