    Postmodernism

Premise that no definite terms, boundaries, orabsolute truths exist.

Irony and humor are among some of thecharacteristics used.

Postmodernism involves the combination of manyelements of other genres and styles to create a

    unique tone of voice.

Metafiction is used in postmodernism which is, insimple terms, writing about writing.

    Postmodernism

Some novels fictionalize historical events andcharacters, such as DeLillos Falling Man, which centersaround the September 11th attacks.

Paranoia is a common effect used in postmodernism. Itis when the author writes under the assumption thatmodern society cannot be explained or understood.

One of the more distinct characteristics is magicrealism. It is when the author introduces impossibleelements into a literary work.

Participation is also a characteristic. Authors use thistechnique to actively engage the reader throughout thecourse of a novel.

Characteristics of Writing Described to have an obsession with

Some of his works have been described as jig-saw

puzzles assembled on a card table that is bumped -the pieces are all there but, they do not seem to fit

    neatly together.

DeLillo tends to write outside of the usual

    framework.

Novels have obscure characteristics that take muchthought to solve.

Ponders the meaning of life in many novels, including The Body Artist.

    Quotes

When you try to unravel something youve

written, you belittle it in a way. It was created asa mystery.

Every sentence has a truth waiting at the end of itand the writer learns how to know it when he

    finally gets there.

For me, writing is a concentrated form of

    thinking.

Ive always liked being relatively obscure. I feel

thats were I belong, thats where my work

    belongs.
