The explorations of the Pachyphytum oviferum succulent plant served as a departure point for the design of my pavilion project that was intended for an outdoor exhibition of cacti and succulent plants at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. Derived from the spiral pattern that made up the Pachyphytum oviferum’s petal, I created a module that when repeated across the facade would provide a place for the cacti to be stored as well as create an unique shadow pattern.

My tone drawing represents be-ginning explorations in abstrac-tion as well as light and shadow. As a class we were instructed to take a picture of an object in such a way that the true identity of the object started to become concealed. Using only a single graphite pencil we were forced to truly think about how light interacted with our object to define its character.

For the Austin Green Center Project I was tasked with designing a building that housed the offices of the Austin Energy Green Building Program as well as an auditorium, library, and community spaces. My design process started with a watercolor gradient that represented how the building embodied the evolution and gradual development of sustainability over time. Being a center for sustainability, the building incorporates several sustainable practices such as solar shading depending on orientation and a trellis that functions as a guide to the entrance as well as a rainwater collection system. In addition, being constructed out of concrete the building stays cool while outside temperatures heat up.

In this project I took several geometries from a previous assignment and created a single volume. I then used Revit and Rhino to create plans and sections of the resultant form as well as create a template to help produce a physical model.

This project was done in collaboration with Alex Wu. The housing complex we chose to analyze was the Kitagata Housing Complex by SANAA. This building’s design is based off of a modular system that arranged 4 room types (outdoor terrace, bedroom, dining room, and Japanese tatami room) in various ways. This arrangement allows for a huge variation in the overall layout of the apartment. The diagrams on the left help illustrate the arrangement and layout of apartments.

This project was done in collaboration with Ana Kurzan, Alex Wu, Hattie Sherman, and Rachel Larson. The driving thesis behind our project was to transform South Lamar into a vibrant hub of dense urban living while still preserving the culture and character of the South Lamar district. In addition, we wanted to reduce urban sprawl and encourage density so we improved pedestrian, bike, and rail transit in the surrounding area. In keeping with our sustainable theme we added green zones, cut down superblocks, consolidated parking, and envisioned an urban rail system to run along the South Lamar corridor.

For this project I designed a multi-family housing complex on South Lamar. The complex was designed as a place where artists and architects could come live and work as there would be communal studio spaces within the complex with an art gallery in front to display their work. The main idea behind the project is connecting the street edge to the river edge behind the apartment. For this reason I sunk a pathway several feet below the ground from the sidewalk all the way to the river edge. In addition, I had the roofs slightly slanted downward to allow the rain to drain off into a stream of water that would flow all the way to the river.

In Object 1 I wanted to explore the idea of a form intersecting into itself and creating several interconnected voids. After creating the digital model I used a folded technique to construct the physical model out of museum board and tape.

In constructing Object 2 I wanted to create a duality between the first and second objects. Object 1 was a surface that was constructed using a folded method. Object 1 was very lightweight and fragile. Object 2 on the other hand is very heavy and all about the mass. I constructed it by stacking masonite pieces on top of one another. There is a certain density in Object 2 that is not present in Object 1.

Object 3 was a collaboration with Alex Wu and Rossina Ojeda. We wanted to explore the relationships of envelope, mass, and void at a larger scale than the previous objects allowed. Object 3 is a combination of the stacked and surface construction method. The form itself can be described as a surface floating on top of a mass, however what makes this object unique is that a thickness is added to the surface and the mass is hollowed out, subverting preconceived notions of mass and surface. In terms of construction and assembly we CNC routed 1/8” MDF and horizontally stacked the pieces together using dowels to align them properly as well as counteract shear.

I worked with Sol Design Lab on designing a logo for a solar charging station that will be installed in two lo-cations on campus. With these sev-eral iterations I was trying to convey the idea of power being derived from nature in a simple, yet clear manner. The bottom two logo prototypes were my initial explorations in the design. After talking with the director, the design took on a more geometric influence, which can be seen in the top three logo prototypes.

This project was done in collaboration with Austin Ablon and Alistair Beckenstein. The site we chose for our luminaire was a park across the street from Austin’s house due to the lack of ample lighting in the area. To combat the darkness we created a light fixture that creates ambient light around the table and that projects direct light on the table’s surface. The light fixture has 3 unique lighting settings to adjust for the amount of light a user needs.
