The Christmas season is my most favorite time of the year. It’s a season of decorating our homes with bright lights, the signing of Christmas Carols, and the opening of our hearts to the needs of others. It is a time when most of us get involved with community service and giving to others. The gift of giving is a path my parents started me down through Girl Scouts, 4–H Club, and our Church Youth group, so I grew up learning the importance and rewards of giving to others at a very young age. From collecting can goods and other needed items, to cleaning

yards and houses for those that could not do it for themselves, these organizations and activities taught me so much. Investing me in others comes naturally because it was instilled in me at a young age; it is a part of who I am. Community service expands your perspective on life and every small effort we put forth counts for someone. To take the opportunity to do something selfless for someone else is priceless, and those feelings you get back are so rewarding.

Just this past week, my Sunday school group had a wonderful time gathering to share stories and snacks while we wrapped gifts. We adopted a family of seven in need this holiday season. We, the givers, through this one evening, enriched our own lives more than even this family in need in which we were helping. For me, providing service to others is a way of showing gratitude for all those things that I do have, and at the same time trying to give others a better life in some small way. Each time you can do an act of kindness for someone else, you have the opportunity to learn new ideas, discover new perspectives, and ultimately grow as an individual.

I look at IAAP and the Galveston County Chapter as a gift I give to myself in life. I have discovered my greatest strengths through serving others and being a part of this great organization as it has helped me grow more than I ever knew I could. Experiencing and succeeding in new areas such as serving in leadership roles has grown my confidence to new heights, and I’m grateful to be able to have learned this in the loving comfort of this wonderful Chapter. Other chapter member’s contributions in my life and friendships have enriched my personal growth and joy in ways words cannot describe. The Chapter’s service projects are always well received by our generous members each year, in fact, just as this month we collected and donated food, toys, and money for two non-profit organizations within our community.

I wish all my fellow members A Very Merry Christmas and A Blessed New Year and I thank each of you for the spot you take up in my heart!

Please support the 2012 Host Committee by purchasing the pin for yourself, your officers, chapter members and others in the administrative profession. The order form can be found at http://iaap2012.org/index.php?p=1_12

A Sunny ChristmasEvery year at Christmas timeThere's not a sign of snow.

Instead we spend our yuletide daysIn the sun's warm cheery glow.

We have the best of Christmas things,The lights, the gifts, the bells,

(And "snowbirds" who arrive en masseTo fill our beach hotels.)

The glorious weather fits right inWith our happy Christmas mood,

And we can also walk and runWithout having to be snow-shoed.

So don't feel bad for your Galveston County friendsWho have no snow or ice.

We think our sunny Christmas here,Is a holiday paradise!

10. Your commute is 30 minutes longer because you have to find new routes to avoid roads near the malls.

9. Even the senior executives admit that not one dag-gone thing is going to get done until January 4.

8. The administrative professionals in the office are doubling as office holiday party planners.

Top Ten Ways You Can Tell It’s the Holidays at Work

A True Blessing From God!

Cannon, Grandson of Rikki Killebrew

When my daughter, Dana, first texted me back on March 16th to tell me she was six weeks pregnant, I couldn't have been more happy until Tuesday November 15th when I saw my grandson's photo via text from Dana!  Cannon Jace Backe arrived at 3:54 p.m. (4 days late) weighing in at a whopping 8 lbs. 8 oz. and 21 inches long.  Dana had a rough time of it having to push for about an hour but said it was all worth it!  Brandon was just beaming with fatherly love when he came and got me from the waiting room to come see Cannon for the first time.  It was so amazing to finally meet my new grandson!

By Chuck Hanson – www.chuckhanson.com

7. All the NON-administrative professionals show up at the office holiday party 15 minutes late and think party fairies put the holiday event together. (Apparently they also think the party fairies clean up afterwards too.)

6. The guy who has used up all his vacation already will constantly talk about how much work he will get done during the week between Christmas and New Year’s.(He won’t get a dag-gone thing done, of course.)

5. Half the office will be joyful at the prospect of spending the holidays with family; the other half… not so much. Neither group will understand how the other group can feel that way.

4. Thanks to the Internets (right), folks will be able to blow off work to do their Christmas shopping without actually having to leave work.

3. More than two months of work will be postponed due to the holidays, but will be due two weeks into January. This is called holiday math. Well, this is one kind of holiday math. The other kind involves credit cards.

2. The company holds its annual company-wide holiday party, which will be either: A. a quiet, somewhat boring affair; or, B. a drunk-fest that provides a year’s worth of office gossip fodder.

And the #1 way you can tell it’s the holiday season at work:

1. Everyone is complaining about their weight but you can’t understand them because their mouths are full.

Merry Christmas!

On-Line CAP Study GroupThe Illinois Division of IAAP is offering an

online study group to prepare for the Certified Administrative Professional (CAP) exam. It will be led by Marie Herman. The group will meet on Monday nights from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. CST via webinar from January 9, 2012 to April 30, 2012. Space is limited to 20 people and priority will be given to Illinois Division members until Dec. 16, at which time any remaining spaces will be opened up to other IAAP members. The cost is only $50 and $25 of that will be rebated following successful completion of the study group (which means you stick with it all the way to the end!).  No refunds will be given once the study group begins.

Group participants will be expected to fully commit to this process. There will be a lot of reading and homework assigned that must be completed between sessions. You will need to purchase two text books as part of this process. You will need to have computer speakers and preferably a microphone headset for interaction (though you can type questions in the computer chat window if necessary).

Additional information will be posted on the Illinois Division website at http://www.iaap-illinoisdivision.org. The registration link is available now.

If you need more information about the study group in general, contact Marie Herman at [email protected].

The A & M Craft Fair

Janine Cmaidalka and Rikki Killebrew worked the Texas A&M Galveston Campus Craft Fair on Friday December 1, 2011.  A big thanks to Brenda Slawson for making the multi-colored popcorn and chocolate chip cookies, Janine Cmaidalka for the chocolate peanut clusters, chocolate dipped peanut butter cookies and the puppy chow (which is not for dogs!), and Rhonda Driver for the shortbread cookies and the crocheted advent hangers and snowflake ornaments.  Fellow member, Margaret Cuellar was there shopping so we were able to include her in our photo with Santa. There didn't seem to be as much traffic thru the fair as last year but we still made a profit.

I would like to give a special thanks to Patrick Dispensa of Texas A&M for providing us with a map of the campus and the exact location of our tables to make our experience with this event as easy as possible!

Dolphin Tales Page 6 of 10ICC & Chapter Holiday Party!

The ICC & Chapter Holiday Party was a huge success. It was held on Tuesday, December 6th at Red River BBQ, and there were 22 members and guests in attendance. A special thank you to all our members who attended, their husbands, dates, and to the Clear Lake members who joined us. It is so wonderful to belong to such an awesome organization and be able to network with members from other chapters. The night was an absolute blast as it was filled with good food, lots of giggles, stealing of gifts during the white elephant exchange, and lots and lots of good cheer. The members really opened their hearts in donations to our community service projects.

Page 7: Dolphin Tales - GCC December 2011 Newsletter

Rikki Killebrew visited the Boys & Girls Club of Galveston on Saturday December 10th to deliver a $100 donation from the Galveston County Chapter of International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP).  Ms. Cheryl Chatman is the Branch Director of the non-profit organization and has been with them for 19 years.  Ms. Chatman gave Rikki a tour of the facility which includes a study room with computers where the kids do their homework after school; a teen room; a library; a kids cafe where the kids get a hot meal; a kitchen (food provided by the Houston Food Bank); a craft room and game room.  The children in the photo below are Sha'Kira Carlisle (11), Aundre Smith (7) and Ariana Smith (9).  They were very appreciative of the cookies she shared with them and of the donation to the organization which helps them along with so many more families.

Rhonda & Tim Driver made the delivery of non-perishable items collected from the ICC & Chapter Holiday party on Saturday, December 10th to the H.I.S. Ministries in Santa Fe, TX. With a Mission Statement of: The Lord Provides......We Distribute, this wonderful non-profit organization helps so many people in our community through their food pantry and resale shops. It is sponsored by 13 area churches, and supported by several organizations and individuals who volunteer in the numerous programs they provide. We had the pleasure of touring the facility and learning of ways that we can contribute to its success. They are very appreciative of all donations. It is highly recommended that we keep this non-profit organization in mind for our future community service projects.

If you would like to donate or volunteer, they are located at 4205 Jackson Street, Santa Fe, TX 77510. They are only open during limited hours – Monday, Wednesday, and Saturdays – 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. They have a food pantry and a Resale Shop!
