How many dolphins are there at Dubai Dolphinarium?

    - We have 6 bottlenose dolphins Senya, Ksyusha, Jerry, Tetka, Fekla & Kai.

    How do dolphins sleep?

    - Marine dolphins sleep with one eye open and the other eye closed. A dolphin has to be

conscious to breathe and two parts of their brain take turns to rest. When the left hemisphere

rests, the right eye of the dolphin is closed and when the right hemisphere rests the left eye is

    closed

    Do dolphins drink water?

    - Salt water dolphins live in the seas and oceans, but they do not drink water as the sea water is

too salty and drinking salt water can make them sick and can even kill them. Dolphins do need

water to survive and they get most of their water from their food (mainly fish and squid). They

can also make water by burning their fat. Just a tablespoon of water in a dolphins lung could drown it.

How often do dolphins have a baby & how is it born?

    - A mature Dolphin will give birth every 2 to 3 years and have as many as eight birth cycles in a

life. Dolphins give live birth, as mammals do. The gestation period can range anywhere from

seven to seventeen months depending on what type of dolphin it is. For most mammals,

including humans, babies are typically born head first. But, a dolphin calf is born tail-first to

prevent drowning. After the mother breaks the umbilical cord by swiftly swimming away, she

immediately returns to her baby and take it to the surface to breathe. The mother nurses the calf

with milk until the baby is old enough to eat typical dolphin food, such as fish and squid. The

baby dolphin travels by its mother's side for up to three years before making its own way.

Do dolphins have teeth & jaws?

    - Dolphins have about 100 teeth that they use for grasping food. Dolphins cannot chew their food

as they have no jaw muscles for chewing. They have to swallow the whole fish

    What do dolphins eat?

    - Dolphins eat fish & consume up to 5% of their body weight daily.

    How do dolphins swim?

  • - Unlike a fish, which moves its tail from side to side, a dolphin swims by moving its tail up and

down. A dolphin carries more oxygen in its blood than a fish and can swim longer than a fish and

hence a dolphin is a better swimmer than a fish

How long does a dolphin live for?

    - The life expectancy of a Dolphin differs from species to species and even from region to

region. It varies from 10 to 70 years. The bottlenose dolphin can live over 40 years, and the orca

    can live to be 70

Are dolphins mammals & where did they evolve from?

    - Yes dolphins are mammals. Dolphins evolved from land animals. The land ancestor of the

dolphin lived about 50 million years ago and looked a little likes a wolf. This animal hunted in

shallow waters and by and by adapted itself to life in water: the forelegs became flippers, the

hind legs disappeared and the fluke evolved, the fur disappeared and the nostrils moved to the

    top of the head.

    What are cetaceans?

    - Dolphins, porpoises, and whales are called cetaceans. A cetacean is a creature belonging to a

group of water living mammals that have no hind limbs and a blowhole for breathing.

What is a group of dolphins called?

    - A group of dolphins is called a pod. Pods can be as small as two dolphins and as large as

    hundreds of dolphins.

What are male, female & baby dolphins called?

    - A female dolphin is called a cow, a male a bull and a baby a calf.

    How do dolphins communicate?

    - Dolphins use 'echolocation' to navigate. Dolphins emit high-pitched clicks then use the echos

that bounce-back from objects in the water to determine the location of those objects. With their

'echolocation', dolphins can distinguish between types of fish the same size, between aluminum

and brass, and between a steel ball that is 2 in diameter and one that is 2 in diameter

What size do dolphins grow to?

    - Most dolphins are about 6 feet long, but the bottle-nose dolphin can be over 9 feet long. The

smallest dolphin is a bufeo, which is about 3 feet 9 inches. The smallest dolphin is the Hector or

    Maui Dolphin

    Can dolphins smell?

  • - Dolphins dont have a sense of smell, but they do have a sense of taste and can distinguish between sweet, sour, bitter, and salty tastes.

How fast can a dolphin swim?

    - Dolphins normally travel at speeds of between 6 and 8 km/hr, as their motion is most efficient

at these speeds. At higher speeds, dolphins tend to jump clear out of the water. This actually

helps the Dolphin save energy, as the air provides a lot less resistance than the water. It is

estimated that dolphins can reach speed of up to 30 km/hr, but that is only in short bursts.

How long can dolphins stay under water?

    - Dolphins can stay up to 15 minutes under water although they usually stay only a few minutes

diving before they go up to breathe.
