The Dolphin Club...20 years and still going strong!

FINAL NOTICE Thanks to all who have already submitted

their dues for 2010. This is the last month the

dues renewal form will be printed in the

Splash.

Remember, Membership Dues are due by

January 1, 2010

Please see Page 3 for the 2010

application.

F irst, I hope you all had a

wonderful Thanksgiving

with your families. Those

turkey sandwiches from left-

overs are great! Also, on

behalf of the Dolphin Board of

Officers, both Elected and

Appointed, we wish you all a

very Merry Christmas, Happy

Hanukkah and a Healthy,

Happy New Year!

As you are reading this, we are days away from the

last Dolphin Club Rally of the year. The Annual

Dolphin Holiday Rally has traditionally been one of

the best attended of our rallies. However, this year

we saw a significant decline in those numbers. There

are several factors at play here:

1. Gasoline costs are hovering in the $3.00 range

and many are not traveling as much.

2. The economy has had an effect on our spending

habit, causing many of us to pick and choose the

events we attend.

3. With the holidays near, we have to choose

between many activities. The Happy Campers

Holiday Rally at Chula Vista the very next week

has some making that very choice!

4. Our membership numbers are shrinking. Fewer

members mean fewer attending rallies.

Why didn’t YOU attend the Holiday Rally? Are you

attending fewer Dolphin Rallies? Are you only going

to those close to home? What can we, as a club, do to

encourage attendance at our rallies?

Please stay in contact with your Board of Officers.

Let us know what you want. Our contact information

is on the website (www.dolphinclub.com). At 271

member rigs, we are still strong and vibrant. With your

help, we will remain that way.

Speaking of the Board, the elections are coming to a

close; and the results will be announced at the General

Membership Meeting at Emerald Desert. Although

most officers are running unopposed, we have six in

contention for the job of Treasurer! Hopefully, the

elections of 2010-2011 will have multiple choices for

all offices. It is good to see more folks willing to take

part in the operation of our wonderful club.

Again, enjoy a Healthy, Happy Holiday Season. I Hope

to see YOU at the next Dolphin Club Rally!

I want to thank everyone who attended the 2009 Chula Vista Rally. You made it a success once again. The weather

was wonderful, and so was the company.

Early arrivals began checking in on Wednesday, and by Friday, we had 49 coaches. Who can not want to spend 5

days in a spectacular campground right on the bay. This remains a somewhat closely guarded secret, and we don't plan

to tell anyone.

Pat Hubbard hosted the Bocce Ball contest. There were about 20 teams competing, and after a hard fought battle

between Don & Martha Beckman and Steve Justice & Syd Byford, Syd and Steve brought home the bacon.....err wine.

On Friday night we held the traditional Friday night happy hour. Everyone brought food to share, and needless to

say we didn't go out to dinner after that. Darryl and Carole Sobelman got the award for the longest drive, and Carlyle

Sherman would have gotten the mention for the shortest drive, but since he always has the shortest drive, we awarded it

to Al and Donna Larranaga at 18.67 miles. Chuck and Judy Stuart were the recipients of the annual "Old Fart" award

for having the oldest FMCA number at the rally. After a number of other awards and mentions, Suzanne Justice

literally brought down the house by sharing some candid photos of some of our members and their husbands participat-

ing in a belly dancing contest.

On Saturday morning we had our potluck breakfast and green sausage. Not all the sausage was green, of course,

just those left over from previous years. It was a virtual feast and enjoyed by all. We then had our second annual

running of the Chula Vista Derby. Everyone seemed to have a great time. We seem to have some real "handicappers"

in our midst, and Paul Speaker had a "photo finish."

We finished up the activities with "The Putting Tournament". Tournament Director, Syd Byford, outdid himself

with the course design. It was difficult, to say the least. Well, not for everyone; Martha Beckman aced the same hole

3 times and had the overall low score for first place. Jo Smith took second and Phil Statham took third.

We ended the day with the park's annual steak dinner and country western night, featuring Calico Ridge. Many of

our group took a turn around the dance floor, including our Vice President, Bob Frauenzimmer and wife Nubby.

On Sunday, after a brief breakfast, we said our good-bye's, except for those staying over. Hope to see you all again

next year.

STORAGE OF SPARE SERVICE PARTS The following is information derived from the

Freightliner Chassis Owner’s Club. For those of

you that carry spare fuel, oil filters and belts in

your motorhome, keeping them fresh and clean

can be done by enclosing them in a vacuum bag

using a household vacuum sealing machine.

Vacuum sealing those parts in plastic will pull the

air out of the bag protecting the parts from dust

and moisture.

El Centro Rally

T here were only thirteen coaches at the rally but it made it a very friendly and close rally. By Friday afternoon we

declared it ―a no badge rally‖ since by then we all knew each other. The first coaches started to arrive Wednesday

afternoon. That night we went to a small Mexican restaurant in Holtville. By Thursday

afternoon all but two coaches had arrived. As typical for the Dolphins, not to miss a

meal, the early birds got together Thursday evening and went to Imperial Valley Mall

for dinner at Burgers and Beer.

Friday was a free day. Some people went sightsee-

ing around Imperial Valley, some went into El

Centro and others just sat around and visited. Din-

ner Friday night was in the club house with wine

and fried chicken furnished and great side dishes and desserts provided by the

women, including homemade warm muffins made by Ann Schwartz.

Saturday was a busy day starting with the Cattle Call Parade at 9:45 in Brawley.

We all enjoyed the small town atmosphere and parade of school bands, fire en-

gines and various clubs. Of course, as in

most parades, the Shriners' were present with

their little cars! We were amazed at how many groups came all the way from San

Diego and Chula Vista. After the Parade most of us went to the Brawley Elks

Lodge for a barbecue lunch before going to the Rodeo. The Rodeo is the last

qualifying rodeo before the National Finals in Las Vegas and some of the best

performers in the circuit were contestants.

It is a big event and a kind of homecoming

in Brawley. One of the highlights was the

―mutton busters‖ where little kids up to

eight years old try to ride a sheep. They are

funny to watch as some of them hang on underneath the sheep trying to finish

their ride. After the Rodeo we went back to the club house for the famous

―Dolphin Margaritas‖ and a delicious taco dinner catered by Fernando ―The Taco

Man.‖

Sunday morning was a continental break-

fast and we said our goodbyes. Nine of us decided to stay over until Monday

and enjoyed left over tacos for dinner Sunday night. The Weils’ children and

grandchildren, who many of us have gotten to know, are moving to Northern

Virginia and joined us for dinner so they could say goodbye.

National Director

My wife Marilyn and I have been

enjoying RVing since 1985 and

purchased our first National RV 32’ Dolphin Diesel in

1993. We joined the Dolphin Club shortly thereafter and

have truly enjoyed the many friends we have made in the

Club. We attend as many rallies as possible and we have

served as Trail boss at several rallies since 1995, namely

at East Shore in Pomona and at several of our past

Christmas rallies. I served as President of the Dolphins

from 2002 – 2004 and am current National Director. We

live in Walnut, Ca. and also enjoy our cabin in the local

mountains and our home on the Colorado River in

Bullhead City, Az. We’ve also enjoyed several years

traveling with our horses, knowing that those Diesel

Pushers will effortlessly get us over that next hill. Our

doggie boys Ralph, then Hobo and now our cutest little

girl Ruffles have always traveled with us, usually sitting

on the dashboard, enjoying the scenery. In total we

have owned 7 RVs. After our 1993 Dolphin Diesel we

purchased a Tradewinds, then moved to an Islander and

currently we drive a 2006 Tradewinds. This past sum-

mer we took a two-month trip, starting at Bass Lake,

Ca., then down to Mexico and onward across the country

to Bowling Green, Ohio where we attended the FMCA

convention. From there we went to the Canadian side of

Niagara Falls.

We cherish the many Dolphin Club friends we have

made throughout the years. Our Club is filled with

members who are quick to volunteer their services,

whether to serve as an officer or to put on a rally or to

assist Trail bosses with their rallies. We look forward to

the upcoming rallies and to more fun with our friends in

our Club.

N ext to the well known Napa Valley, is the county of Sonoma. Sonoma is the home of many great

wines, one being the home of Kendall-Jackson Winery. Kendall-Jackson is known and sold though

out the world. Jim Stanley, a Dolphin member, retired from Kendall-Jackson after many years will be

conducting a wine seminar.

Jim was a senior executive in the wine industry for almost 20 years before retiring from Kendall-Jackson,

having held the titles of Vice President of Marketing and Executive Director of Education. He has

conducted seminars and tastings at the White House for Congressmen and Spouses, the NASA-Ames

Research Center, Disney’s Epcot Center, Harvard, Yale, MIT, Stanford, UCB, UCLA, Michigan, Northwestern, Chi-

cago, Notre Dame, George Washington, Duke and dozens of other universities and corporations. I’m sure you will find

the tasting both educational and enjoyable.

On Saturday, March 27, 2010, 4:00pm, Jim Stanley will conduct a wine tasting and education seminar featuring

Kendall-Jackson wines. The cost will be $8.00 per person to offset the cost of the wines and materials. The emphasis

is on understanding what characteristics YOU like in a wine, without all the ―wine speak‖ and jargon that is so often

confusing. Normally this seminar would cost well over $40.00. Take advantage of this one time offer. Attendance is

limited to 40.
