Production & Process :

• 75 bunches are harvested and loaded onto the cable system andthey are carried to the packing plant through the farm.

•  As the bunches arrived at the packing station, protective pads are

removed from the hand and sent back to the fields to be used again.

• For quality control each tray of banana is numbered and the locationof the harvester and the harvesting team is recorded.

• The cable system encompasses all the fields are on the farm and isabout 80 miles in total length.

• Bananas are washed with chlorinated water and thoroughlyinspected.

• If the bananas do not meet Dole’s stringent quality standards

harvesting is immediately halted in the field from which they

originated.• Banana hands are cut from the stem and put in the water to removeexcess latex which is found naturally in bananas.

•  A gentle water current in the tank moves the banana hands to thenext station where they receive an another quality inspection and

are cut into clusters of five to seven fingers.• The clusters float to the next workstation where they are removed

from the water tank and placed on trays.

• The trays are then transported by conveyor to the next workstationwhere they receive the worldwide symbol of exceptional quality theDole Sticker.

• The bananas are now ready to be packed into boxes specifically

designed for long distance transport.• Bananas cluster are carefully placed in the box using methods tominimize damage to its shipment.

• The bananas are wrapped into specially perforated material whichallows the fruit to ripe while in boxes.

• The entire process from harvest to box takes only 2-3 hours.• The boxes are then staked on pallets in preparation for transport.

• For quality control and traceability throughout the shipping processeach pallet is given its own unique identification code

• COPDEBAN-Dole, investing in the preparation of small bananafarmers and their organisations, and providing them with theinfrastructure for packaging of their product. COPDEBAN suppliesthe product to Dole, who is responsible for the transport and trading

in destination markets.• Small-holder producers of organic banana, who improve their

production and take charge of harvest and post-harvesting process,up to delivering the packaged product Free-on-Board.

• DALE-Peru Foundation (CSR foundation that receives funding from

Dole), supporting the Inclusive Business initiative and helpingproducers’ associations to develop investment profiles for the

community and providing advice to help the associations attractinvestment. Dale Foundation channels the US$1 received throughCOPDEBAN-Dole for each box sold on the fair-trade market (part of

normal Fair Trade regulations, in this case channelled through Dale)and makes sure it is invested in line with the farmers’ interests.

• SNV, provider of technical expertise and assistance, facilitating theinclusion of small producers into the COPDEBAN-Dole supply chain.

•  Inter-American Development Bank through its Multilateral

Investment Fund (MIF), co-financing the activities of the InclusiveBusiness model.
