This should be pure fun and enjoyment with no conflict. If you are always taking things from your dog and never giving them back or playing with him, he is going to learn to despise the “drop it” or “give” or “out” command. Instead we teach him that 90% of the time we will be rewarding him and replacing the item.

1

Show the puppy the toy by bouncing it near and letting the puppy grab onto it then immediately let go and begin playing with the second toy.

#1 Mistake at this point would be to let the dog run away from you and play with the toy far away. Instead use the leash or long line to keep him close so that he can see you when you begin to play with the second toy.

Get two of your dog’s favorite toys, put your dog on a leash and work in a safe fenced environment.

#1 Mistake at this stage would be having similar but different toys so that the dog forms a favorite, or toys that your dog has not played with or shown interest in.

Continue kneeling on the ground and playing this game making sure to add the “Drop It’ command as the puppy is already spitting out the toy. Soon, the puppy will almost immediately drop what he has as soon as you add movement and excitement to what you have, tell him what he is doing “Drop It” as you being to fling the toy a bit farther away so he has to give chase. #1 Mistake at this point would be to inadvertently grab the other toy too quickly, which will pull the puppy off of the toy you just threw.

Again bounce the ball and pretend that you are playing with the toy, your puppy should show interest and want the toy you are playing with as he drops the first toy to grab the toy that you have, add your cue “Drop It”.

#1 Mistake at this stage is to add any kind of punishment, yelling or control at all; simply let your puppy snatch the toys that you have while adding your cue over and over and over again.

5Begin throwing the toy farther and waiting to reveal the second toy when the dog brings the first closer.

#1 Mistake at this point would be to reveal the toy that you have too soon which will keep the puppy from bringing back the toy he has in his mouth.

Continue playing this game while adding the cue. Soon he will automatically begin to drop the toy on command in apprehension of the second toy being revealed.

This takes away all of the conflict of the usual “Drop It” command where owners just take things away from their dogs without giving them any reward in return. This conditions the dog that “Drop It” is rewarding in and of itself so he will be much more likely to drop something that he grabs that you don’t want him to have.

This also teaches your dog to retrieve which is a great way to exercise your dog!!!
