Exercising with your dog

All dogs require exercise to keep them fit and healthy. Exercising dogs also

keeps them bright and alert, w

hich prevents excessive barking from boredom

. W

alking your dog on a leash can be an ideal way to exercise your dog.

It is an offence under the Companion Anim

als Act to take a dog on to a public place (ie. street or park, etc.) w

ithout a leash.So as to allow

a greater freedom for the exercise of dogs, O

range City Council has established a num

ber of areas where you can exercise your dog off-leash.

This brochure has been produced to show the location of those off-leash areas

and outline guidelines about how to use them

.The exercising of greyhounds is prohibited in off-leash areas.

Your responsibilities at off-leash areas

There is one basic responsibility in using off-leash areas and this is to :show

consideration for other users of the park and nearby residents.

All dogs are prohibited from being:

ithin 10 metres of any playing apparatus for the use of children.

• w

ithin 10 metres of any apparatus provided for the preparation of food

for human consum

ption or for the consumption of food by hum

ans. (BBQ

areas, outdoor picnic tables).•

Pick up after your poochYou m

ust pick up and dispose of your dog’s faeces. If you do not, you may be

fined. Orange City Council has provided special dog litter bins next to off-leash

areas. Use a pooper scooper or an old plastic bag.

Always under control

Even when your dog if off its leash, your dog m

ust be under your effective control at all tim

es. This means the dogs m

ust respond imm

ediately to com

mands such as ‘Stop’ and ‘Stay’. These com

mands are particularly

important w

hen other dogs or children are using the off-leash area. Even in off-leash areas, the person in charge of the dog has responsibilities under the Com

panion Animals Act regarding dogs attacking other anim

als or persons or if the dog strays outside these areas.

Other Parks &

ReservesYou can exercise your dog in other parks and reserves around the city including Lake Canobolas (via Cargo Road) as long as they are on a lead at all tim

es.
