Does technology have an effect upon children? Maryán Zepeda Nowadays, technology is changing the way we live because of the variety of devices that modern science has given us. This first generation of technology has been influenced by the comfort and rapidity that these inventions provide. In the case of children, they have been immersed in technology from their early childhood. Furthermore, in an opposite perspective Ms. Strauss stated that she concluded kids need first-hand engagement to manipulate objects physically, engaging all the senses, and moving and interacting with the 3-dimensional world. She said that this is what maximizes their learning and brain development, and the time children spend with screens takes time away from the activities we know they need for optimal growth. In addition, researchers argued that those who had tracked children’s creativity for 50 years are seeing a significant decrease in creativity among children for the first time, especially younger children from kindergarten through to sixth grade, and this decline in creativity is thought to be due at least in part to the decline of play. We have to be aware about technology when teaching children because generations change. As teachers we have to provide instances to include technology to encourage children’s attention and play to provide the abilities that are essential in children’s development. In my opinion, teachers must be able to use technology in order to increase children’s motivation because virtual tools belongs to this generation, so we cannot deny what technology facilities could give us in classroom. However we have to be aware of the indispensable skills that children must develop through playing because they must interact with the real world. There are some aspects that technology doesn’t provide such as emotional, social and moral dimensions and these aspects are crucial in children’s growth. Finally, in teaching we must consider technology’s weaknesses and strengths in order to bring to the children the best way to learn, and we must be aware of the imperative skills which are developed through playing.
