studbooks and world registers for rare species of wild animals in captivity

The following rare animal studbooks and world registers have been officially endorsed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). A number of studbook keepers have experienced great difficulty in eliciting response from owners of rare specics in captivity and regretfully some studbooks have been suspended. Studbooks whose keepers have failed repeatedly to report to the Yearbook have been treated likewise.

The figures for births, deaths and numbers registered for the various Studbook species are based on the studbook keepers’ annual reports to the Yearbook Editor, who i s the official Studbook Co-ordinator; unless otherwise stated, figures this year relate to 31.12.1972. They may not in all cases correspond to information recorded in the preceding pages of census and breeding data. Studbook and Yearbook surveys are conducted independently and in many instances studbooks include animals in private collections, circuses and other institutions falling outside the scope of the Yearbook. Zoos reporting to the studbook keeper may fail to report to the Yearbook, and vice oersa, and sometimes, particularly where subspecific distinctions are concerned, discrepancies may occur. The longer a studbook has been established, and the more con- versant the animal owners are with studbook procedure, so the margin of error will fall. New studbooks or studbook keepers are indicated by an asterisk(*).
