INTRODUCTION
This directory contains information about organizationsthat offer support, information and ether services toparents of seriously eme'onally handicapped childrenand adolescents in the U.S. The directory listingshave been compiled from information obtained through a1985-86 survey of parent organizations conducted by theFamilies as Allies project of the Portland Research andTraining Center.
Organizations included in the survey were those thatindicated that they provided one or more of the follow-ing services to parents: (1) education and information;(2) parent training; (3) advocacy, either at the case orsystems level; (4) support groups, or; (5) direct assis-tance such as respite care, transportation, or child-care.
The organizations listed in this directory represent awide range of organizational types. They include self-help organizations organized by and for parents with noprofessional assistance, groups started by staff membersof service-providing agencies, and groups sponsored byother organizations such as Mental Health Associationsor affiliates of the National Alliance for the MentallyIll, among others. We did not include organizationswhose services are only available to parents when theirchildren are also receiving services from the organi-zation.
The groups included in this director; also reflect avariety of different goals and populations. A few arespecifically and exclusively targeted to families ofseriously emotionally handicapped children. The major-ity of the organizations included in this directory, how-ever, serve parents of emotionally handicapped childrenalong with other populations such as relatives of men-tally ill adults or families of children with a varietyof p;ysical, emotional and educational handicaps.
e-J
Funding for the survey of parent organizations and forthe preparation of this directory was provided by theNational Institute for Handicapped Research in collab -ration with the National Institute of Mental Health.Assistance in planning and monitoring the study wasprovided by the Technical Assistance to Parent Programs(TAPP) project in Boston. In addition, staff from thefour Regional TAPP Centers across the country partici-pated in the telephone data collection process. Thanksto TAPP!
This directory is designed to fit in a standard three-hole notebook taking 5 3/8" by 8 3/8" paper. The parentorganizations in this directory are listed alphabeti-cally within states. We have done our best to insurethat the listings are accurate, up-to-date and compre-hensive. Recognizing that a work such as this is ne tercomplete, however, we have included forms that may beused to update or add directory listings. Forms thatmay be used to order additional copies of this director.are also located at the end of the listings.
We hope that this directory will be useful to parents, service providers and others interested in improvingservices to seriously emotionally handicapped childrenand adolescents throughout the country.
