PREFACE
Ihe exercises included in this book wero'pre'paiud to make mathematic:,
both Interesting and easy to understand. N
Teachers and mathematicians with the Southwest Cducational Development
Laboratory adapted these materials. They were guided by the following
beilefs:
or
11
Children are interested in mathematics.
Learning is enhanced by emphasis on understanding of concepts
rather than on memorization of rules, and understanding
results from being actively involved in experiences froitg_
which concepts are to be abstractedo.
Alternative sequences of mathematical pncepts can be
followed, and yet the stcucture.of Mathematics can be
preserved.
Children can learn more mathematics than they are now
learning.
