make your expectations clear; find the right spot; make time; monitor your

child's progress; encourage good habits; support and be available; look for

help; offer encouragement; keep organized; and communicate with your child's

teacher(s) . It concludes that parents' support and encouragement can make a

A Letter to Parents

Dear Parent,Homework is an important way for your child

to learn. Through homework your child prac-tices and reviews what is being taught by theteacher in the classroom. Homework offersopportunities to focus on areas of difficulty andto work on creative projects. When your childregularly completes homework assignments, heis better prepared to learn while at school.

Homework assignments can have other valueas well. Through homework children learn howto work independently, how to manage theirtime, how to exercise self-discipline, and how tofind information and solve problems. Homeworkalso promotes a lifelong love of learning inchildren.

As a parent, you are there to support yourchild, not do your child's homework. Help yourchild take responsibility for her own learning byhelping her establish good study habits, helpingher find answers to questions, and providing herwith encouragement and praise.

The ten ideas in this booklet will give

you easy ways to make homework asbeneficial for your child as possible. They

will also help your child develop a good

attitude about homework. This makes lifeeasier for both you and your child!

Make yourexpectations clean

Demonstrate in words and actions to yourchildren that you consider school and home-work to be important. Completing theirhomework will help them learn as much aspossible. Therefore, let your children knowthat you expect them to finish their home-work on time and to do their best with eachassignment.

rovide a quiet place for your child todo his homework. He will need space towork, good lighting, and basic supplieslike paper, pencils and pens, an eraser, aruler, and a dictionary. A desk is nice, buta table in the kitchen or living room isfine, too.

Make time.

t's important to set a iegular time forchildren to do their homework. Duringthis time distractions should be kept to aminimum, for example, no phone callsfrom friends and no music or TV untilhomework time is over.

heck in with your child periodicallyat least every 30 Minutes, more often withyounger children. You want to be sureyour child is keeping focused on his workand that you are available to help him ifneeded. Look over completed assignmentsbefore they are turned in and read theteacher's comments when assignmentsare returned.

Encouragegood habits.

Help your child manage her time andset goals. If she has a lengthy project,such as a research paper, discuss all thesteps she will have to take to complete itand ask her to estimate how much timeeach step will take. Help your child avoidlast minute cramming for tests by havingher review the material well in advanceand making up a practice test.When multiple assignmentscompete for her attention,help her set priorities.

Support andbe available.

Try to be available to your child, or haveanother adult available, while he is doinghis homework. If he is having difficulty,check to see that he understands thedirections. Ask him if he has done similarproblems before that could guide him.Make sure he has the supplies and bookshe needs to complete the assignment.

f your child has questions and problems withhomework that you cannot resolve, call some-one who can help: the homework hotline,another student in the class, your child'steacher, or a tutor. If she has repeated prob-lems, be sure to discuss them with her teacher.

Both praise and criticism are important.Be honest and specific. Praise your child'seffort and persistence, as well as achieve-ment. Offer constructive criticism whenit is warranted and suggest specific waysto improve.

Discuss your child's homework with herteacher, especially if there is a problem.Let her know if your child finds assign-ments too hard or too easy, or if sherefuses to do her work even with yoursupport. It is also helpful to let the teacherknow when assignments are particularlyinteresting or exciting for your child.

Periodicamente revise lo que sus hijosesten haciendo; pór lo menos hágalo cada30 minutos, y con los nilios más pequeiloshágalo más seguido. Usted debe estarseguro que sus hijos se están enfocandoen su trabajo, y usted debe estar al pen-diente por si necesitan ayuda. Antes deque sus hijos entreguen trabajos que leshayan asignado, reviselos, y lea loscomentarios del maestro cuando se loshayan devuelto.

Estimule losbuenos habitos.

Ayudeles a sus hijos a utilizar bien sutiempo y a establecer sus metas. Si uno de sus hijos tiene preguntas y problemascon su tarea que usted no puede resolver, llamepor telefono a alguien que pueda ayudar, porejemplo a otro estudiante de su clase, almaestro, o a un tutor. Si los mismos problemaspersisten, asegUrese de discutirlo con sumaestro.

Anime asus hijos.

Tanto el elogiar como el criticar sonimportantes. Sea' honesto y hable con sushijos con ejemplos especificos. Halaguesus esfuerzos y su persistencia, asi comosus logros. Ofrezcales critica constructivacuando sea apropiada, y sugiera ideasconcretas para mejorar el trabajo que sushijos le muestran.

Manténgaser anizado.

Tenga un lugar designado donde cada hijo desu familia puede guardar sus libros y sus tareaspara asi encontrarlos fácilmente cada mailana.Una mochila y unas carpetas mantienen juntaslas cosas durante los viajes de la casa a laescuela.

Comuniquesecon los maestrosde sus hijos.

Discuta la tarea de sus hijos con susmaestros, especialmente si hay proble-mas. Al hablar con los maestros, hágalessaber que la tarea la encuentran ya seamuy dificil o muy fácil, o aviseles si losnilios se niegan a hacerla aun con la ayudade Ud. También tiene mérito informarlesa los maestros cuando sus hijos encuen-tran interesante o muy emocionantealguna tarea.

Conclusion

El apoyo y el dnimo que los padres les dan asus hijos pueden tener consecuencias muypositivas en cuanto a su exito en la escuela. Silos padres crean un ambiente hogareno dondese le dé valor al aprendizaje y si se interesan enel trabajo de sus hijos, les ayudarán a tener unaactitud positiva hacia la tarea y hacia elaprendizaje en general.
