1994 CONFERENCti BULLETINThis year, NMEA's annual conferenceis being held in conjunction with theAmerican Institute of Biological Sci-ences (AIRS). This has led to changes inour normal registration procedures.Registration materials have been sent toNMEA. members directly from AIBS.Conference chair Valerie Chase has pro-vided answers to questions you mayhave about the conference.

Where are my registrationmaterials?In late April, AIBS mailed a red, whiteand blue registration brochure to allNMEA members. NMEA's mane waslisted among those of several other so-cieties, so you may not have noticed it.If you need to receive another copy of theregistration packet, call Valerie Chase at(410) 576-3887 or fax your request to(410) 659-0116. Please be sure to pro-vide your name and address.

Why aren't any NMEA sessionslisted?NMEA sessions will be listed in a pro-gram mailed to folks who have regis-tered for the AIBS conference. Only twoNMEA events require F e-registration:the Auction and the Mr. and Mrs. FishShow ($6 for food) and the evening atthe Tennessee Aquarium ($43 with biride). They are field trips'No: 29 and 30in the brochure. Be sure to pre-register

for the auction and dinner at the aquar-ium. On-site is too late. You may alsosign up for other field trips. Sessions areopen to all. NMEA will have three days

"(Monday-Wednesday) of concurrent ses-sions ranging from 20-minute papers to4-houiworkshops. Thursday morningis free for you to go to other sessions orexplore local attractions like the zoo andscience center. Sea Grant folks have ameeting Thursday morning. Thursdayafternoon, we'll visit the Tennessee .

Aquarium in Chattanooga.

Why ride the bus to the aquarium?If you are heading home to the south,you may want to check-out of thedorms, drive to Chattanooga, then con-tinue on from there. Otherwise, take thebus, unless you are ready for a 2-hour,night drive back to the dorms on a roadthat may still be under construction.

Don't teachers pay half price?If you are a full-time K-12 classroomteacher, register as a graduate studentand include a note on school letterhead.giving your school name, district andsubject(s) taught. The half-price specialfor teachers and students means otherssubsidize their costs: please do notabuse this courtesy.

How were the talks scheduled?I tried to make sets of things which hadcommon themes. Some things did notfit easily together. I let the symposia setsome of the themes: Bridging the Gap(Monday), Achieving Diversity (Tues-day) and Global Change (Wednesday).

For the past 22 years the Discovery HallProgram has offered marine educationprograms to grades K-12. As a marineresearch institute, the Dauphin IslandSea Lab links current research programsto the K-12 curriculum. Scientists at theSea Lab give talks to all grade level stu-dents and help in developing curricu-lum for use in the program. The HallProgram is based around hands onlearning experiences. The Lab utilizes re-search vessel trips into the estuary aswell as salt marsh excursions to helpmake a lasting impression. The yearnfor knowledge about our oceans'crosses all age barriers, including an ac-tive elderhostel program. The growth inresearch and understanding of marineenvironments helps to stimulate stu-dents in science classes. Networking ma-rine education and research programswith other NMEA members helps tokeep this one of the best programs inthe nation.

Rick Tinnin. University of Texas, PortAransas. Marine Field Experiences forTeachers and Students On the Texas GulfCoast.

For the past 19 years, the Marine Educa-tion Services (MES) program at the UTMarine Sciences Institute has offeredfield experiences to an average of 9,500visiting school students each year. Thecore of the program is a 57' research ves-sel which serves as a floating classroom,providing hands-on experiences ib over5,000 students each year. The MES pro-gram also hosts 17 teacher workshopswhere over 800 classroom teachers inter-act with faculty and researchers at the

marine lab. The teachers are then pro-vided opportunities to incorporate cur-rent research into their classroomsthrough activities and curriculum devel-opment. The interdisciplinary nature ofmarine science crosses all subjectboundaries and provides the perfect ve-hicle for an interdisciplinary course ofstudy. The excitement and allure of theocean captures the imagination and at-tention of teachers and students alike.

Sharon H. Walker. Gulf Coast Re-search Lab/Mississippi-Alabama SeaGrant, Ocean Springs, MS. Project-Ma-rine Discovery A Series of ExemplaryEnvironmental Education Programs.

Since 1')87, Project Marine Discovery(PMD) has invited K-12 students to par-ticipate in interactive, hands-on experi-ences involving: horseshoe crabs;endangered species; marine and aquaticpollution; marshes, estuaries, and wet-lands; deep-sea vents and benthic com-munities; fish biology; habitat loss; plantand animal diversity; oceanic profiles;conservation and preservation; and en-vironmental stewardship. To further fa-cilitate "bridging the gap" betweenresearch and the classroom, workshopsand undergraduate/graduate coursesare offered for preservice and inserviceteachers. All of these programs occur atthelaboratory'sJ.L. Scott Marine Edu-cation Center and Aquarium in Bilo'i,MS. The center has about 75,1)00 guestsannually of which the PMD programscomprise 30,000 participants.

During this overview of the ChristaMcAuliffe Fellowship project entitled"Kids, Crabs, and Cockle Shells," partici-pants will see slides of developmentallyappropriate activities for young chil-dren, teachers and parents which intro-duce them to Alabama's coastal

habitats. The project indudes marshes,an estuary, Mobile Bay, seashores andthe maritime forest. Activities incorpo-rate math and science skills and con-cepts related to marine environments.Children count, group, graph, classify,measure, record, report, sort, label, ex-amine and identify animals and plantsthat inhabit the coastline. These activi-ties stimulate the understanding of sci-ence application anywhere. Discussionand handouts conclude the talk.

Brian Fong. Cape Cod Floating Class-room, Barnstable, MA. Whales andOther Marine Life: Translating Scienceand Interpreting Research.

This paper discusses the education fo-cus of a whale watch and marine sci-ence program on Cape Cod waters.Rather than simply watching whales,the participants are provided with pre-and post-trip materials that complementthe activities students engage in onboard. By studying landforms and ex-amining biological and water samples,students view the big picture, howwhales and other marine life interactwithin their ecosystem. Programs are de-signed by dynamic and experiencededucators in response to teacher needsand area curricular requirements. A fo-cus is on techniques to translate scienceinto English, interpreting research find-ings for visitors.

Steve IL Russell. Marine Option Pro-gram, University of Hawaii, Honolulu.Experiential Opportunities in MaritimeArcheology and History at the Universityof Hawaii.

The University of Hawaii's Marine Op-tion Program has, over the past sixyears, developed a field school trainingprogram in maritime archeology survey-ing techniques. The goals of the fieldschool are to teach a strong conserva-tion ethic in regards to submerged cul-

. tural resources and to provide basictraining in skills (scientific diving, un-derwater and shoreline mapping andsurveying and video and photo docu-mentation) necessary to conduct non-in-vasive surveys of these resources. Thispaper will discuss the mechanics and ac-complishments of the field school andthe importance of incorporating mari-time archeology and history into the ma-rine curriculum at all training levels. Itwill also briefly discuss post-secondary

academic opportunities and careers inmaritime archeology.

In most rural areas of our country, wellwater is the major source for a home-stead's drinking water. Thus, it makessense to prevent contaminated ground-water from entering well areas.Horce*A"Syst is a unique awareness-building tool that allows rural home-stead owners an opportunity to assesshow their homestead activities (wateruse, farm/home waste management,dangerous product storage, etc.) may beaffecting their groundwater/drinkingwater quality. The program uses easy,step by step worksheets that allow theowner to rank these activities. Rankingsidentify any high risk activities forgroundwater contamination and sug-gest action plans to correct the problems.

Informal institutions translate sciencefor the public. Get a "fresh" new per-spective on the freshwater habitats ofthe Tennessee River. Follow the riverfrom its origins as a small spring high inthe Appalachian Mountains as it flowsover hills and plains, creating habitatsfor various life forms. The Tennesseeand Ohio Rivers flow into the mightyMississippi River. Hundreds of milesdownstream, great swamps are formedin the low lying Mississippi delta. Asfresh water gives way to salt, the Gulf ofMexico is formed, teeming with life nur-tured by the freshwater veins of theland.

Monday, August 8, afternoonWORKSHOP: MARE: A School-Wide,Interdisciplinary Ocean Studies Program,Using Marine Habitats to Bring to Life theThemes of Science. Roberta Dean,MARE, Lawrence Hall of Science, Univer-sity of California, Berkeley, CA 94720 ,

MARE is a school-wide, inbvdiscipli-nary ocean studies program which usesmarine habitats to bririg tc 'ife thethemes of science described in Project2061 and the California Science Frame-work.The program is appropriate forany school, inland or coastal and is currently being used system wide in Reno,NV. The MARE curriculum and inserv-ices provide access to challenging sci-ence instruction for all students,including language minority studentsthrough hands-on sheltered instructionand cooperative learning techniques.MARE helps schools implement a year-long science curriculum which is articu-lated across subjectsond grade levels.The year is highlighted at each schoolwith a week-long Ocean Week celebra-tion which includes special projects,guest speakers, field trips, and crossgrade student peer teaching. MARE of-fers a residential Summer Institute,whole faculty inservices, and on-sitesupport during Ocean Week. This work-shop will include hands-on activities de-signed for use in ethnically andlinguistically diverse classrooms.

We are desperately attempting to meet.the outcry of equipping our scienceteachers while staying within the budg-etary limits. One must ask "What makesa successful inservice teacher field studycourse?" The University of Georgia'sMarine Extension Service at SkidawayIsland has provided an Eisenhower sup-ported two-week inservice teacher fieldcourse for the past six years. Analysis ofpre-and post-test data, interviews of par-ticipants and course creators and vari-ous site visits resulted in the emergenceof recurrent key components pointing tothe success of this program.

This presentation will focus on variouselements of Live from Monterey Canyon,a cooperative educational program sup-ported by the Monterey Bay Aquariumand the Monterey Bay quarium Re-search Institute (MBARI). Live videofrom a remotely operated unmannedsubmersible operating deep in the Mon-terey submarine canyon is beamed viamicrowave from a research.ship to theauditorium at the Monterey Bay Aquar-ium. Visitors have the opportunity tosee these live images in addition to sam-ples selected on request from over 180still and video images cataloged on la-ser discs. An interpreter standing at thepodium in front of an 8' by 10 ' screenselects images and fields questions fromthe audience. Real time radio communi-cations with the scientists on board theresearch ship may also be incorporatedinto the program. Live from MontereyCanyon offers visitors firsthand experi-ence with on going deep sea research be-ing conducted by MBARI and theMonterey Bay Aquarium.

Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consor-tium, in cooperation with Auburn Uni-versity and the Alabama Sea GrantExtension Service, piloted a project toenhance the fourth grade science pro-gram in Mobile County's inner-cityschools through field excursions. Stu-dents and teachers engaged in a "mini-course" on wetlands and marine lifeusing the Environmental Studies Cen-ter's wetlands areas, wildlife exhibitsand.marine teaching aquarium. Teacherinservice, learning objectives, pre/posttrip planning, field trip activities, re-source materials and overall prograrhevaluation will be discussed.

At age 13, this presenter and his youngfriends were introduced to SCUBA div-ing by a member of the National Asso-ciation of Black SCUBA Divers. Thatexperience provided positive role mod-els who became extended family, rein-forcing values learned at home. Thatexperience also provided the founda-tion for a continuing quest to broadenminorities' knowledge of potential ca-reers in the sciences. This presentationprovides an overview of experiences inorganizing programsthrough bothprofessional and personal supportthat foster marine and environmentalscience education foy children.

Looking west from coastal Oregon, thePacific.Ocean conceals the nature of thecontinental shelf. Most visualize it as aflat slope, eventually dropping off to thedeep ocean. But, if the water is removed,a myriad of rocky reefs and pinnaclesfills the "landscape." The significance ofthese reefs to the public and the msearchsurrounding them is communicated toOregonians through education efforts atmany levels. This session looks at the re-search and how it is being used in Ore-gon schools.

John Dindo. Dauphin Island Sea Lab,Dauphin Island, AL. Hard Bottom Com-munities off Alabama With A Deep Diveto the Methane Seeps.

In 1' 3 local shrimpers were curiousabout rocks that they were catching intheir trawls. They brought them to theDauphin Island Sea Lab and, from thatinitial contact, a research investigationled us to the examination of low profilehardbottom areas off the Alabamacoast. Oxygen and carbon dating re-vealed the rocks to range from 18,000 -30,000 years old. This corresponded tochanges in sea level and depicted the ex-tent of the Florida Panhandle and Ala-bama coasts. Associated with thesehardbottoms are soft corals (gorgoni-ans) which enhance the reef type com-munity. Our research efforts extendedout onto the shelf in deeper water andrequired the use of a manned submers-ible. With this capability, we were ableto examine reef structures and dive toan offshore methane seep at 2,000 ft.

Students were identified as at-risk for dropping out of school based onthe Beaufort County school district pro-file for potential drop outs. Participants

It allows teachers toevaluate students through performancecriteria designed beforehand andshared with the students who are doingindependent study/research, not a regu-larly scheduled class, the ten parameterswill be discussed and compared with amore traditional grading system, and ex-amples will be given to show stumblingblocks as well as effectiveness in this ap-proach to learning.

Use of instruments, equipment andmeasurements: Chemical analysis ofwater using a spectrophotometer, con-ductivity meter, digital titrator and pHmeter. Velocity measurements and bio-logical sampling. Determination of lan-duse of the watershed of the creek byuse of a grid and aerial photographs.

Data collection, storage, manipulationand interpretation: use of computersand special programs to manipulatedata. The annual report, emphasizinggraphs that will compare and contrastdata based on season, temperature,water volume (especially before and af-ter the Flocid of '93) and site differences.

Advertising creeks to the public: discus-sions on conveying earth wise messagesto the community: elementary studentsto adults. Water conservation, respect ofriparian habitat, riparian biology, effectsof human development on creeks, theFlood of 1993s impact on creeks of theKansas prairie, and other creek-relatedtopics. The Gulf Coast Research Laboratory im-plements a number of nationally recog-nized educational programs in marineand global science. Efforts have been un-dertaken to more fully assess the shortand long-term impact of these pro-grams, utilizing qualitative datasources. Quantitative data have beenutilized substantially in program evalu-ation, monitoring, and planning since1987, but it is believed that a comple-mentary picture of program impact canbe developed from qualitative sources,particularly in a multiple-program edu-cation center.

Thissession will present curriculum materi-als designed to introduce students ingrades 8-12 to the zebra mussel andother exotic species. Problem solving ac-tivities using current scientific researchdata will be demonstrated. Participantswill receive a copy of the teacher re-source packet.

Although green plants utilize the sun'senergy, most organisms depend on acontinuous external supply of energy-rich organic molecules. Chemosynthesismight have been a major pathway forsupplying that organic richness in theearly days of life on earth. The compari-son of photosynthesis and chemosynthe-sis provides a conceptual linkage forhigh school biology students to under-stand that energy is a primary require-ment of life. A slide presentation andhands-on activity will contrast energy-fixing cycles of these very different pro-ducers. This paper will focus onphotosynthesis, chemosynthesis, energycapture and transfer, and the cycling ofmatter.

Marine debris is not only an aestheticproblem for recreational beaches, butcan be a lethal issue for marine animals.December, 1992, a juvenile femalesperm whale washed ashore onWrightsville Beach, NC. During the ne-cropsy, the stomach contents revealed

an assortment of plastics from a bleachbottle to 30 feet of polypropylene line.The death of this marine mammal wasattributed to malnutrition. While zoolo-gists have proposed some new ideasabout the eating habitats of youngsperm whales from this death, educa-tors decided to use the incident to pro-vide some lessons in conservation. Thissession will show the 1994 17-minutevideo with footage from the necropsyand interviews with educators and theMarine Mammal Stranding Network

and provide an educational strategy forusing this in the classroom.

Mark Shilling reported on the wide--spread use of WOW' Wonders of Wet-lands, but I neglected to mention that"WOW!" is the wonderful work of BrittSlattery of the US Fish and WildlifeService. Britt had her second child, Pat-rick Henry Slattery on April 8, 1994.

Steven A. Melcher writes to say he hascompleted. the Water Quality Manualfor the state of Delaware. He retiredfrom teed- ng (an indefinite sabbatical)and moveu from Delaware to...brr 27 de-grees...upstate New York. He spent lastsummer exploring Lake Ontario in hisnew sailboat and was active with theGreat Lakes Initiative. A computer net-work was set up linking everyone in-volved. Steven is also on the educationboard of the Senaca Park Zoo where thetheme for the new Children's Zoo is"Rivers of the World." Between trips toEngland, Belize, Guatemala, Russia andLindyhurst, NJ Steven has been teach-ing an oceanography course, lookinginto adopting a child from Russia, tak-ing African drumming, ballroom danc-ing and putting together a new tape,too! Leaving the position of Presi-dent to Donna Stewart of the Jekyll Is-land 4H Center who recently traveled toupstate New York to accept the "Alum-nus of the Year" award from the Conser-vation Department of the Finger LakesCommunity College.

Peg Collins of MME reports that DavidDonna (MME) of Milton High School inMilton, MA took his students on Enviro-Lab out into Boston Harbor. They didan otter trawl during which Davidwarned them that they would unfortu-nately see no codguess whatTWOGREAT BIG CODS! Boston Harbor isalive and well but don't ask about thewater and sewer bills!

Peg also reports that Linda Macintosh(MME) of the Dana Hall School inWellesley, MA has a new baby boy andthat George Duane (MME) has been in-ducted into the Massachusetts ScienceEducators Hall of Famean honorgreatly deserved. (I had the chance tospeak to students in George's marine sci-ence class in the fall and I must agree!DC)

Cathi DeLisle of SENEME and theMystic Marinelife Aquarium wrote that,in collaboration with three other muse-ums in Connecticut, they are workingon an exciting and challenging programcalled "The Connecticut Museum Col-laborative for Science Education." Thisthree year program for teachers and

middle schcol students is funded byNSF. Also...in June a new exhibit, "Con-servation Information Center" openedat the Mystic Marinelife Aquarium. Vol-unteer's present programs and provideinformation about Lang Island Sound toaquarium visitors.

Several resources reported on the mediablitz involving Bill Hastie of OregonFish and Wildlife...Bill, while in Victo-ria, BC last summer was in front of theParliament Building as part of a protestover logging. A news team saw Billwith an Oregon NMEA sweatshirt (theywere very hot items at the Oregon meet-ing in 1992!) and ran to ask him his opin-ion of logging in the US. Bill, being themedia-shy guy we all know him to be,grabbed the mike and gave them a fullreview of US logging and how it hasdevastated the Oregon mountains.Hopefully the state of Oregon was r,tuned to Canadian TV that weekend.Photographs will be available. Ginger Hinchcliff, Education Coordi-nator at Rookery Bay National Estu-arine Research Reserve in Naples, FL.was selected as the educator to serve onthe external review committee for theNational Sea Grant College Program.Findings of the committee are expectedout sometime this summer. Ginger andTom Fish, Information Specialist atRookery Bay, recently attended the Gov-ernor's Environmental EducationAwards ceremoily in Orlando, FL.There they learned that Rookery BayN.E.R.R. had won the award for overallexcellence in the Government category.Congratulations!

Seacamp Association, lnc.iof Big PineKey, FL (which includes NMEA mem-bers Irene Hooper and John Booker)will be leading the first Russian Sea-camp Expedition in July. Fourteen for-mer campers and several Seacamp staff,accompanied by Russian camp staff,

teachers and scientists, will explore theculture, history and ecology of the coun-try through a boat tour on the VolgaRiver and a stay at a Russian summercamp.

Jeff Sandler, (the Mr. half of Mr. andMrs. Fish) called with news that he hadjust returned from a fabulous trip to Ja-pan where he was the guest of the gov-ernor of the northern Japanese state ofAomori. The purpose was to help Ao-mori and Maine become sister states.Jeff has been studying Japanese for fiveyears and is the President of the JapanAmerica Society of America. His Japa-nese came in handy in Shinagawa, Ja-pan (Portland, Maine's sister city) when

he gave a speech in JAPANESE(!!!) be-fore the legislature. When asked if theaudience looked perplexed or intrigued,Jeff replied at people came up to himafterward and wanted to know moreabout the "warthog in the bathroom!"Those that did understand the speechgave him a standing ovation! To see Mr.Fish for yourself, in English, be sure toattend the auction at our summer confer-ence in Tennessee. Jeff, once again, willbe the auctioneer. Thanks, Jeff!
