SERIES NOTE

This is one of a series of Specialized Bibliographies prepared and distributed by the Public ServicesDivision of the National Library of Medicine (NLM). These bibliographies are usually the result of acombination of manual and computerized searching, utilizing databases produced by NLM andothers. Specialized Bibliographies are generally more selective in content than those bibliographiesproduced under NLM's Current Bibliographies in Medicine series. The only criterion for inclusion of apublished work in a Specialized Bibliography is its relevance to the topic being presented; the format, ownership, or location of the materials are not considered.

Publications in this series are not copyright.d and may be freely reproduced. A single copy may beobtained by sending a self-addressed, gurnmeL !abed to the address given below.

CD-ROM: COMPACT DISC - READ ONLY MEMORY

This bibliography was prepared expressly for the Evaluation Forum: MEDLINE on CD-ROM held atthe National Library of Medicine on September 23, 1988. The Forum was organized by the Library, and featured representatives of biomedical library and clinical sites that participated in the evaluationof seven commercial!) -available CD-ROM products containing subsets of the MEDLINE database.MEDLINE is the N ational Library of Medicine's bibliographic database covering the fields ofmedicine, nursing, deltistry, veterinary medicine, and the preclinical sciences; it contains about sixmillion records from 1)66 forward.

CD-ROM ;,;i., vnerged as an important alternative access medium for scientific, technical, business, and a host of other informational databases. The subjects in this publication, therefore, are broaderthan the specific theme of the Forum and are intended to address the needs of various user groupswith an interest in this technology and its apilications. In addition to MEDLINE on CD-ROM, forexample, it contains citations to articles about public access library catalogs, economic issues, specificdatabases, and standards. In gathering references, the MEDLINE and Health Planning &Administration databases of the National Library of Medicine were searched as well as ERIC,Information Science Abstracts, INSPEC, and LISA. The majority of the material comes from thenon-NLM databases, and is not available in the National Library of Medicine's collection.

This bibliography is not intended to be exhaustive, and the exclusion of a particular item is noreflection on its quality or usefulness. The purpose is to indicate to the audience the type and rangeof materials available and to provide a starting point for further investigation.

This bibliography has been divided into four sections. The first section includes journal articlessubdivided by topical area. Citations may appear under more than one topic. The second and thirdsections contain citations for monographs and serial titles. An author index comprises the finalsection, in which each author's name is followed by the page number on which his or her citationappears.
