INTRODUCTION
During the 1974-75 academic year, the Science and Environmental
Education Area in the Department'of Curriculum and Instruction at The
University of TAnnessee, Knoxville, Tennessee; conducted a nation-wide
survey analysis of public elementary and secondary school environmental
education program and project curricula. The central focus of this re-
search effort was directed at identifying and describing selected cur-,
ricular characteristics of such programs and projects, and analyzing
these characteristics as they related to specified criterion variables.
(A report summarifing the study findings is in preparation and will be
available for general dissemination.)
A fundamental c.-:moonent of the total research effort was the identi-
fication of those programs and projects, and their directors/coordinators,
which were to constitute the study population. The final study population,
consisting of 536 program and project directors/coordinators, was established
using the following procedures:
1. A direct-mail survey was conducted of all state education'agencycoordinators for environmental education. These individuals wererequested to identify those public school environmental educationprograms and projects within their respective states which. wereapplicable as members of the study population. Only one stateagency representative did not respond to this survey request.(See Appendix I.)
2. The ERIC Information Analysis Center for Science, Mathematics, andEnvironmental Education publication, A Directory of Projects andPrograms in Environmental Education for Fl-mentary and SecondarySchools (1974-75), was analyzed ai'd those programs and projectswhich were applicable to the study were identified.
3. A direct-mail request for assistance in identifying appropriateprograms and projects for inclusion in the study population was sentto 33 organizations, agencies and persons known to be working inthe field of environmental education. More than two-thirds of thosecontacted responded. (See Appendix II.)
iii
The purpose of this directory is to compile a listing of public_
school program and project directors/coordinators that can be utilized to
facilitate the formation'of a national communication and information de-
livery system among operational programs and projects. In no way, however,
does this publication purport to list all existing programs and projects.
The compilation of programs and projects is presenteein two sections.'
Section I lists those programs and projects which responded to the actual
survey instrument administered in the research study. Section II contains
a listing of those programs and projects whith did not respond to the research
instrument, but were identified as appropriate programs/and projects for
40 inclusion in the study pOpulation. In both sections, all programs and
projects are listed by state.
