junior high teachers with a list of up-to-date social studiestextbook materials. The texts are arranged topically according to 95social studies categories and include works published from 1962through 1974. Each annotation includes the text title, source ofpublication, subject matter emphasized, and grade or reading level.The teacher is cautioned about actual readability of the material,since no formula for readability was applied; rather, publisherdesignation as to grade level appears in the bibliography. Some ofthe major social studies topics of the bibliography include Africa,India, the city, Indians, economics, Japan, Latin America, learning,regions of the United States, United States history, and values.(JR)

INTRODUCTION

This annotated bibliography is designed to help teachersof Elementary and Junior High Social Studies classesdevelop curriculum.

The bibliography is topically arranged and focuses oncurrent textual materials. Grade level designation areprovided to assist the teacher in choosing materials for"below" and "above" grade-level students. The teacheris cautioned regarding actual readability of the material.No readability formulas were applied to determine theprecise reading level--the publishers designation as tograde level is what appears in this bibliography.

The materials listed can be found only in the SocialStudies Consultant area and not in the Educational ResourceCenter (ERC) Area, thus check out procedures should behandled via a written or telephone request to Roger Mangan,Social Studies Consultant.

The intent of this guide is to acquaint teachers withmaterials. The intent is not to have teachers checkout these books for classroom use. Why? In most casesonly single copies exist and many teachers requestswould go unmet if classroom use is made of these books.The value of this bibliography is in knowiag whetherthe units, topics and information in a particular bookfit your program. If so, then your district can order themfor student use.

The check out period for these books is two (2) weeks.However, it is suggested that utilization of thesematerials take place at Area IX, ERC.
