THE COLLEGE VACANCY SURVEY
Each May the office of Special Higher Education Programs at WICHE conducts'the College Vacancy Survey among institutions of postsecondary educationin the 13 western states.* WICHE polls the offices of Admissions andRecords in order to determine the location and number of freshmen andtransfer student vacancies for the following fall term.
The Survey is designed to provide a service to the public as well as to theInstitutions. By compiling, publishing, and distributing the informationreceived from the schools during the poll, WICHE enables students andwould-be-students seeking admission to locate and apply to institutionsstill having vacancies. Similarly, institutions are able to receive appli-cants in order to fill otherwise empty spaces in their student bodies.
In the current survey, 447 institutions were polled; of this number, 229schools responded (51.2%). Responding institutions reported 141,669 open-ings, in terms of actual numerical estimates. Please remember that thisfinal total, as well as the totals given for individual states will rep-resent minimum openings only. The trend toward "open admissions" poli-cies** is increasing among western colleges and universities. We wereable to assign numerical estimates toward arriving at state vacancy totalsonly when they were given by the institutions. But most open admissionspolicies did not allow for numerical estimates, hence state totals areminimums.
GUIDELINES FOR USING THE SURVEY
Please read the following information to facilitate your use of the Survey.
1. Categories: Colleges and universities are listed alphabetically bystate and are divided into two- and four-year categories within eachstate. Vacancies are reported for both freshmen and transfer students.Within each of these divisions, vacancies are specified for commuterraid dormitory students. Additional information, if any, is providedfollowing each institutional entry.
*WICHE states include Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii,Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.
**The definition of "open admissions" may vary slightly among insti-tutions. It does, however, most often refer to policies that expand accessin education, allowing anyone with a high school diploma or its equivalentto be admitted to the institution. (Yung-mei Tsai and Paul Wing, September,
1972).
4
2. Making Application for Admission: Persons wishing to make appli-cation to an institution listed in this Survey report are requiredto follow regular admission procedures for that institution. Thesepersons should make contact directly with Admissions offices at theinstitutions of their choice. Institutions will, in turn, makedecisions about admitting students on the basis of regular admissionscriteria. Prospective students are reminded that they should riotreapply to any institution that has already denied them admission.

THE GRADUATE SCHOOL VACANCY SURVEY
This year, the Office of Special Higher Education Programs at WICHEconducted a survey of vacancies in graduate and professional schools anddepartments. WICHE polled the graduate and professional school deans inthe thirteen western states* to determine the location and number ofgraduate vacancies at the master's and doctoral levels for the fall 1974term.
The Survey is designed to provide a service to the public as well asto the institutions. It enables students and would-be-students to locateand apply to institutions still having vacancies. Similarly, institutionsmay receive applicants to fill vacancies in their student bodies.
In the current survey, 135 graduate schools were polled; of these, 28responded (20.7%). Responding departments reported total vacancies of5474. This total, as well as the totals given for discipline categories, represents minimum openings only. Many graduate departments reported "nolimit set" for enrollment.
GUIDELINES FOR USING THE SURVEY
The following information will facilitate use of the Survey:
1. Organization: Graduate departments are organized under the REGISdiscipline categories (established by the U.S. Office of Education,Higher Education General Information Survey - see p. 31 ). Withineach category, departments are subdivided by discipline and furthersubdivided alphabetically by state and institution name. Vacanciesare specified for master's level (M) and doctoral level (D) students. Each graduate department requiring Graduate Record Examination (GRE)scores is noted with minimum acceptable scores, if any. Similarly, other examinations or entrance requirements are noted. A glossaryof frequently used standardized test abbreviations follows. Graduatedepartments were requested to report if research or teaching assistant-ships were available; many reported the possibilities for, rather thanthe availability of, financial aid for fall 1974.
2. Making Application for Admission: Persons wishing to make applicationto an institution listed in this Survey report must follow regularadmission procedures for that institution. They should directly con-tact Admissions offices at the institutions of their choice. Institu-tions, in turn, will make decisions about admitting students on thebasis of regular admissions criteria. Prospective students arereminded that they should not reapply to any institution that alreadyhas denied them admission.
