Operation
PacketExpert™ - IPLinkSim™ can be installed between two LAN segments as shown in the diagram.
PacketExpert™ can be configured as a Bridge to forward frames between the connected networks/end points.

Bypass Emulation
Bridge Mode Configuration
• Emulation Bypass option allows the ARP/Multicast frames to either bypass the emulation (and sent directly to the output port of the link) or to be included as part of the WAN traffic emulated.
ARP/Multicast frames are bypassing emulation

12
Link Emulation
• PacketExpert™ IPLinkSim emulates a bi-directional WAN link between the ports 2 and 3. Each direction acts as a separate and independent WAN Link.
• Each link (P2 -> P3) and (P3 -> P2) can be configured independently for all the link emulation characteristics.

Bandwidth
Link Emulation
• Emulate various WAN link speeds (Modem, DLS, T1, E1, T3, E3, Oc3/STM1, Oc12/STM4 etc).
• Link rate in units of bps, Kbps, and Mbps.
• Range is from 10 Kbps up to 1000 Mbps

LatencyLink Emulation
Latency: To simulate propagation delay and jitter due to various links (Satellite, Wireless, Wire etc) and
network elements (Routers, Switches, Firewalls, etc). Delay 0 ms to 8 sec (8000 ms)
Constant: Set a constant delay, in milliseconds.
Uniform: Set a uniform delay within a range of delay values (varies uniformly between the set
minimum and maximum values, in milliseconds).
Normal: Internal algorithm generates normally distributed delays between the minimum and
maximum configured values, in milliseconds.

Packet Loss
Link Emulation
Packet Loss - are configured to simulate overload network or underperforming network devices.
Packet Loss Rate - Random (% of total packets (0–100%)
For example, if a 1 Mbps link is specified to have a 10% packet loss rate, the maximum
possible average throughput is 900 Kbps.

17
Packet Reordering
Link Emulation
Packet Reordering -specifies the probability that each frame is reordered and the amount of time
that reordered frames are delayed from their original position. Emulate packet routing in various
possible paths. This behavior is controlled by two parameters:
Probability - 0 to 100%
Delay – 0 milliseconds to 8 seconds
Document Number PXE200-3.10.10-08
18
Packet Duplication
Link Emulation
• Packet Duplication - specifies the probability that a frame will be duplicated. Emulates
misconfigured routers.
• Packet Duplication - Duplication range – 0 to 100%
• Duplicate frames are then subjected to rate control, delay, loss, and reordering
independently of the original frame.

19
Logic Error Insertion
Link Emulation
• Logic Error Insertion - are configured to emulate faulty network devices or interference. This
allows user to introduce errors into the outgoing traffic.
Error Rate - The error rate ranges from 10^-1 to 10^-9
Offset Start – specify the offset bytes from the start of the frame
Offset End - specify the offset bytes from the end of the frame

20
FCS Error Insertion
Link Emulation
• FCS Error Insertion - Frame Check Sequence (FCS) is the extra checksum characters added to
a frame for error detection. Normally caused by interference or incompatible device.
FCS Error rate range 10^-1 to 10^-9.

21
Background Traffic
Link Emulation
• Background Traffic -Background traffic is specified as a link utilization rate and a burst size.
Emulate competing traffic in the network with traffic under test.
Link Utilization Rate – 0 to 100%;
Burst Size - 0 to 1,000,000 bytes

22
Link Statistics
IPLinkSim
• It provides real-time transmission statistics of the traffic over the emulated link (P2-P3)/(P3-P2) for each direction.
• The statistics parameters include Dropped Frames, No. of errored Packets, Dropped Packets, Duplicate Packets, Reordered Packets, and Average Throughput of the link, for varying durations.

Throughput Graph
IPLinkSim
• A real time display of Throughput of the link, plotted as the rate against time, in the form of a line graph. The Graph can be viewed for a single link or both the links together.
