Documen$ng Mul$beam System Parameters in SIS
Mul$beam Advisory Commi3ee 2012-‐03-‐21
SIS 3.8.3
Mul$beam Advisory Commi3ee – March 21, 2012 2
Outline
• Expor$ng system configura$on parameters • Screen grabs – Installa$on parameters
• I/O configura$on of sensors • Installa$on geometry
– Run$me parameters • Preferred sounder mode of opera$on
– External Sensors • Communica$on configura$on for other sensors
– Datagram Distribu$on • Distribu$ng data to other soNware
Mul$beam Advisory Commi3ee – March 21, 2012 3
1. Expor$ng Parameter Files • Much of the system configura$on can be exported as readable text
configura$on files which can later be imported. This is useful in quickly reconstruc$ng a working system aNer a SIS re-‐installa$on.
• There are expor$ng op$ons under the SIS “File” menu. – Export PU parameters: saves “Installa$on Parameters” and “Run$me
Parameters” – Export User SeXngs: saves user preferences, datagram distribu$on list, etc.
• Do – store the configura$on files off the SIS machine in a write protected, yet easily
accessible, loca$on on the ship’s network – prepare some metadata for the files describing the date/$me and hardware/
soNware/firmware versions of the system they pertain to – Setup a naming conven$on that that captures the date, pla[orm, sonar type
and file contents, e.g. 2012_081_Kilo_Moana_EM122_PU_parameters.txt • Don’t
– edit the configura$on files, they are easily corrupted by wayward keystrokes

Choose the path first, then enter a filename prefix that follows your naming conven$on.

2. Screen Grabs • Screen grabs allow for a safer, if more labor intensive, reconstruc$on of
the last known good opera$ng state of the system and can help deal with – SIS database corrup$on: it may be inadvisable to re-‐import configura$on
files that might be causing the corrup$on. – SIS upgrades: the migra$on of these types of seXngs is not always
successful • Do
– Tag screen grabs with date/$me and organize in a meaningful manner – Store some metadata along with the screen grabs that clearly indicate the
mul$beam hardware/firmware/soNware versions that they pertain to – Collect screen grabs from soNware of other sensors that are associated
with the mul$beam (e.g. mo$on sensor), this will allow for reconstruc$on of the mapping system as a whole

Open an “Installa$on Parameters” tear-‐off window and complete screen grabs for all tabs (View menu, the select “Tear off”).
Installa$on Parameters
There are several tabs in the Installa$on Parameters dialog.
Many of the tabs have several sub tabs.

Installa$on Parameters
There are mul$ple entries in this selec$on menu, make sure you get a screenshot for each one (COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, UDP2, UDP5).

Run$me Parameters
There are many tabs in the “Run$me Parameters” dialog menu. Most of the important parameters that affect sounding coverage and density are on the first tab. It is a good idea to document each of these tabs to help get the system back to a safe default mode prior to the beginning of each cruise.

Under the “Tools” menu, select “External Sensors”.
External Sensors
A single screen grab will document the sensor configura$on. If you have mul$ple sensors and mul$ple COM ports defined, then you will need to get a screen grab for each COM port.

Under the “Tools” menu, select “Custom” then select “Datagram Distribu$on”.
Datagram Distribu$on
Note the scrolling bar on the right, you may need to get several screen shots to capture all the datagrams.
