DOCkSIDE PERSPECTIVE A look back on 2010 shows the community of SGBoating customers growing larger while at the same time becom-ing ever more closely-knitted. The year-long series of events hosted by SGBoating was a resounding success in many ways. Each brought seasoned boaters together and introduced plenty of newcomers into the fold.

Leisure time is a personal thing. For some, a five star, all-inclusive is being on your own boat, and the very best way to enjoy the freedom of boating is to anchor up in a tranquil bay. Most of us appreciate the creature comforts in our own house, of course, but every one of us should experience the secluded romance of boating in a quiet cove. It is an experience that will allow you to escape and discover the beauty of boating.

What you hold in your hands now – the second issue of DocksideNews magazine – is a taste of our boating exhila-ration, bottled for future use. This issue gathers stories of SGBoating customers whose time on the water bring them closer to nature, closer to family and achieving their boating dreams.

Fairline Boats, a luxury motor yacht manufacturer, was rewarded the esteemed ‘Motor Boat of the Year’ Award 2011 in the ‘Sportscruiser Above 45ft’ category for the Targa 58 GRAN TURISMO

This is the third consecutive year that Fairline has won a Motor Boat of the Year Award.

The Motor Boat of the Year Awards is judged by a panel of boat testers from UK marine titles Motor Boats Monthly and Motor Boat & Yachting. Hugo Andréa, Editor of Motor Boat & Yachting presented the award and said: “This category nearly caused a riot in the judges’ meeting originally because we struggled to agree on what actually constituted a sports cruiser now that some of the larger ones have started sprouting fly bridges, and of that because there’s a very good case for any one of these boats scooping the

big prize.“Our winner is a boat

that doesn’t just deliver on the water but also moves the game on with a raft of clever new innovations that bring real benefits to the end user. It is the Fairline Targa 58.”

The award was accepted by Adam Greenwood, Technical Director at Fairline Boats, who comments: “We are absolutely delighted that the design of this model has been recognised. The Targa 58 GRAN TURISMO was the launch pad for new concepts such as the Tender Launch System, which we designed in-house to assist owners in launching and retrieving their tender. We also introduced an entirely new Fairline interior layout with the master cabin and en-suite forward to maximise space onboard whilst still creating a luxurious living space.”

While 2009/10 brought a sea of change for much of the marine industry, Meridian Yachts’ position as the top builder of bridge boats in the U.S. remained unchanged. According to the latest results by Statistical Surveys Incorporated, using reported state vessel registration data, Meridian Yachts was the best-selling brand of bridge boats in the country for the fifth consecutive year in 2010.

In fact, 2010 marked the highest market share ever for Meridian in the 35-60 foot bridge boat category, as the brand captured nearly 20 percent of the market. The gap between Brunswick’s offerings and the competition also grew, as Meridian alone sold nearly three times as many boats in 2009 & 2010 as the Number 3 competitor in the category.

For years, fiberglass remained the go-to material for sport fishing boat manufacturers and although it will likely never be phased out, times are changing.

All it took was a spin on the water at a boat show with his family four years ago. With no prior boating experience, Bryan Lim plunged in and bought his first boat, a 37-foot Chaparral Signature 350. The clincher for him at the time was the obvious excitement of his children when they went

Bryan says going on boating trips makes the family closer. “We spend a lot of time together on the boat, playing games and having barbecues.”

He jokes: “After all, there’s nowhere to escape when you’re out at sea.” It also made Josephine understand her husband’s love for fishing. The housewife said: “I didn’t like it before, but when we went out with the boat and I tried to fish, I found it quite exciting. Every moment on the boat brings us new surprises or activities to do and

spend with my family. The bonding is so much stronger.” They make regular trips to neighboring islands and have also travelled to Tioman, which is five hours away, for a holiday.

One of the perks of having their own boat is being able to set sail for hard-to-reach places. Bryan says: “Everyone talks about Raffles Lighthouse (which is named after Singapore’s founder and is 14km south of the mainland), but how many people actually get to see it?”

Island-hopping after work is a regular activity for Dr Goh Seng Heng, a resident of Sentosa Cove. After driving home from his Orchard Road clinic, the medical director of an aesthetic practice parks his car in his driveway and walks over to his backyard, where his 42-foot Meridian 391 Yacht is berthed.
