1 What is The Episcopal Church?

As The Episcopal Church, we are followers of Jesus committed to prayer, community, service, and peace. We believe that Christ has risen from the dead, and through him all people are reconciled with God. We want to follow Jesus’ example and teachings and share with everyone his message of love and hope.

The Episcopal Church was born from the Church of England, which has had a distinctive form of faith and worship since the 1500s. Many churches around the world also share a special connection with the Church of England and have similar beliefs and practices. All these churches form the Anglican Communion. The Episcopal Church is established not only in the United States but also in countries such as the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela. In other parts of Latin America, including Mexico and some countries of Central and South America, you will find other churches that are also part of the Anglican Communion.

Somos un grupo de seguidores de Jesús dedicados a la oración, la vida en comunidad, el servicio y la paz. 2 How is The Episcopal Church different from the Roman Catholic Church?

If you come from a Roman Catholic background and attend an Episcopal worship service, you will notice many similarities in the way we pray, use the Bible, and share the bread and the wine. However, there are some important differences, especially in the way the church is organized. The Episcopal Church is basically a democratic organization. Lay members, along with clergy, participate and make decisions that affect the whole church. The Episcopal Church is also different from the Roman Catholic Church in the radical way it welcomes all people, including many who have been traditionally rejected by the church, those who may have doubts, or those who question traditions.

3 Why do you emphasize that “All Are Welcome”?

We believe that a radical welcome is at the core of Jesus’ teachings. For Episcopalians, a radical welcome means that all of God’s children can participate in the sacraments of the church no matter their race, marital status, or sexual orientation. In our church, you will find people who are white, black, Asian, and Latino; people who are married, single, and divorced; people who are straight, gay, and transgender. In The Episcopal Church, every baptized person is invited to receive communion, including

children, independently of whether they have had a private confession with a priest or whether they give money to the church. Everyone who wants to experience God in their life is invited to the participate.

4 Can my children be baptized or receive communion in The Episcopal Church?

The answer is a resounding yes! Traditionally in The Episcopal Church, children are baptized, and teenagers are confirmed (although we welcome people making these commitments at any stage of their lives!). Although all children are invited to take communion, many Latino congregations offer special classes to help children and young people learn more about the meaning of communion (the equivalent of First Communion preparation classes) and become more knowledgeable and committed Christians.

Episcopalians see these rites not only as important for individuals and their families but also for the life of the congregation—a sign of its strength and mission. Because of this, before performing a baptism or a confirmation, Episcopal priests typically will ask children and their parents to attend church on a regular basis and become active members in the life of that congregation.

5 What happens during an Episcopal worship service?

Episcopal congregations come together at least once a week to celebrate a eucharistic service (i.e., “the mass”): we sing hymns, hear scriptures and sermons, and share our concerns and thanksgivings through prayer. During the Holy Eucharist, all baptized Christians are invited to partake of the bread and wine, which are sanctified by the Holy Spirit to be for us the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. We do this in remembrance of the Last Supper. We believe that this coming together symbolizes not only our togetherness as a congregation but also the unity of all Christians.

6 What does The Episcopal Church say about the Virgin Mary and the saints?

Although many Episcopalians do not have the custom of praying to the Virgin Mary, we celebrate her as the person chosen to give birth to our Lord Jesus Christ. She is a model of maternal love and grace who courageously embraced God’s plan. As you visit Episcopal congregations, you will find many

7 What is The Book of Common Prayer?

The Book of Common Prayer is a manual that guides the way we pray and worship together. It contains the basic text of our eucharistic service and other sacraments of the church as well as a catechism or summary of our shared beliefs. The Book of Common Prayer has been the basis of our worship since the 1500s. Versions of The Book of Common Prayer are used by Anglicans across the world, making this book an important part

8 Can priests in The Episcopal Church be married? Can women be priests?

The answer to both questions is yes. We do not believe that being married or being a woman are impediments to being a priest. God calls women as well as men to the priesthood. As you attend The Episcopal Church, you will see women functioning as deacons, priests, and bishops along with men. We believe that having married people and women priests adds diversity and strength to the church.

9 How is a parish or congregation organized?

Although congregations are typically led by one or more priests, lay members play a crucial role in every congregation, participating in the eucharistic services and helping create a faith community where all members know, love, and support each other. Some lay members have a special role as members of the vestry, which is equivalent to a board of directors. Vestry members work closely with the deacons and priests and participate in the important decisions made by the congregation.

10 How much money does the church expect me to give?

During the eucharistic service, a plate is passed, and worshipers are invited to give offerings. No specific amount of money is required. However, we believe that everything we have, including our material possessions, comes from God. Rather than owners, we are the managers or “stewards” of these possessions. This stewardship includes giving part of our time, talents, and material resources to the church. We are all called by God to be ministers, to serve the church, and to help create a better world.

9 ¿Cómo está organizada una parroquia o congregación?

11 What good works does The Episcopal Church do in the world?

The Episcopal Church believes in engaging with the world. Many congregations are dedicated to serving their local communities, helping the poor and the needy, and developing initiatives that create better communities. The Episcopal Church supports programs that improve the lives of millions of people living in different parts of the world, especially in developing countries. We believe that Jesus’ message challenges us to speak in favor of the poor, the migrant, the sick, and the oppressed and we often make statements on issues relating to peace and justice.

12 How can I become a member of The Episcopal Church?

If you regularly attend an Episcopal church, you already are a part of the church. However, we understand participation in the church as more than merely attending Sunday services. We urge

you to participate in your congregation not only to worship with others but also to learn from others, support others, and serve the community around your church. If you have never been baptized, we invite you to talk with your priest and prepare to do so; if you have been baptized, we invite you to be confirmed in The Episcopal Church and to participate fully in helping sustain and direct its mission.
