New Funding Opportunities

Funding for Digital Projects with a Social Impact (UK)

The Nominet Trust which provides funding and support to imaginative social technology ventures has announced that the next funding round of its Social Tech Seed Investment Programme will open for applications on the 22nd September 2014. 

Social Tech Seed is an investment programme that offers early-stage investment of between £15,000 and £50,000 to entrepreneurs who are looking to develop new ventures using digital for social impact. This programme provides funding and support to help entrepreneurs nurture, develop and test their ideas. The Trust is looking for applications that demonstrate the potential of technology to tackle some of the big social issues in sectors including education, employability, healthcare and the environment.

Similar projects funded in the past include:

Playlab London a game, controlled by breathing, designed to ameliorate the effect of panic attacks, providing practical support to those who experience anxiety related conditions and REyooz a community-driven, social gifting platform to encourage re-use of items otherwise destined for landfill. 

The Trust are hosting a series of pre-application events and web chats to give potential applicants the opportunity to find out more about what the Trust are looking for in a social tech venture and ask any questions about their project.

Royal Bank of Scotland Inspiring Women in Enterprise (UK)

The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) has announced that the next funding round of its Inspiring Women in Enterprise programme will re-open for applications on the 6th October 2014.

Through the programme organisations that support women setting up their own business can apply for grants of up to £50,000. Funding is available to:

Deliver enterprise education Innovative networking events Developing entrepreneurial knowledge and skills, etc.

The total fund available each year is £500,000.

Previous projects supported include:

Dungannon Enterprise Centre in Northern Ireland which received funding to pay for master classes and experiential learning experiences through ‘off-site' best practice visits to role-model entrepreneurs.

Flying Start which provides inner-city women in Birmingham with the skills, confidence and support to set up social enterprises.

The closing date for applications will be noon on the 17th October 2014.

Funding for Young People and Youth Workers (UK)

Young people and youth organisations in the UK can receive funding for projects that promote youth exchanges, volunteering and the training and networking of youth workers.

The funding is being made available through the European Commission's Erasmus+ programme. The funding is available to UK public bodies, NGOs (not for profit organisations and registered charities), unincorporated youth groups, and informal groups of young people (one member of the group must be aged 18-30). Private limited companies can also apply for funding but there are some restrictions in place. The funding can be used to cover travel and organisational costs as well as special and linguistic needs, etc.

The deadline for applications is 11am on the 1st October 2014.

The Leche Trust (UK)

The Leche Trust has announced that the next closing date for applications is the 20th December 2014.

The Trust makes grants:

Towards the furtherance of education or academic research To support the National Trust and the preservation of rural England To help finance the visits of teachers and students abroad.

The main focuses of the Trusts grant making activities are the:

Promotion of good relations between Britain and third world countries Assistance to academic, educational or other organisations concerned with music, drama,

dance and the arts Preservation of buildings and their contents and the repair and conservation of church

furniture Preservation of the nation's countryside, towns, villages and historic landscapes.

Funding for European Strategic Youth Partnerships (UK)

The European Commission has announced that grants are available to youth groups and informal groups of young people to develop strategic partnerships.

The funding which is part of the Eurasmus + programme aims to support collaborative projects that improve youth work practices. Strategic Partnerships in Youth should last between 6 months and 2 years and are a flexible way of working with partners from different countries. Projects must focus on activities designed to improve youth provision across the participating countries, such as developing, testing and implementing innovative youth work practices; etc. Strategic Partnerships in the youth field must include a minimum of two partners from two different Programme Countries, including the applicant organisation. The number of partners and funding will vary depending on the project's aims and activities and a maximum of €150,000 in funding is available per year.

Power to Change Short Film Competition (UK)

UnLtd, the social enterprise charity, has announced that people wishing to start a enterprise in their community can enter the Power to Change Film Competition to win some funding.

The first prize is an award of £1,000 with two runner up prizes of £500 each. Ideas could include transforming an empty shop into a technology hub, or a disused pub which could be the centre of the community. The competition is open to anyone over the age of 18 living in the UK. To enter the competition, applicants need to upload a short film of their idea.

The closing date is the 30th September 2014. Films will be judged by a panel of judges on their creativity and their potential social impact.

Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund (UK)

Esmée Fairbairn has announced its £ Collections Fund is currently open for applications.

The Fund provides grants totalling £1 million per year to broaden access to, and use of, museum collections and focuses on time-limited collections work outside the scope of an organisation's core resources. Eligible applications include:

Research into Collections Conservation Collections review Initiatives to develop the use of collections.

Each individual grant is within the range of £20,000- £100,000.

Previous awards include:

A grant of £53,000 to Glenside Hospital Museum to research items from Beaufort War Hospital.

£65,000 to the Harris Museum and Art Gallery for a project to relate the museum's coin collection to contemporary audiences.

Grantees are expected to join an MA run network which encourages shared learning and training.

The closing date for applications for this funding round is the 12th September 2014.

Whitley Fund for Nature – Call for Applications for the Whitley Awards 2014 (International)

The Whitley Fund for Nature (WFN) has announced that the Whitley Awards 2015 are now open for applications. WFN is a UK registered charity and offers the "Whitley Awards" to outstanding biodiversity conservation leaders around the world.

Whitley Awards are both an international profile prize and a form of project funding (currently £35,000 over one year) that can be used for wildlife and nature conservation focused projects. The Whitley Awards are open to biodiversity conservation leaders working in countries or regions of which they are nationals and that are NOT defined as a high-income economy by the World Bank (with exceptions). Applicants will need to ensure community involvement in their conservation project, and show evidence of proven success and likelihood of future project sustainability.

The deadline for the 2015 Whitley Awards is the 31st October 2014.

Youth Football Goalposts Grant Scheme Opens for Applications (England)

The Football Association ( FA) has announced that the 9 v 9 Goalpost Funding Scheme has re-opened for applications.

The Foundation's Youth Football Goalposts grants are available to schools to cover 50% (up to a maximum of £500) towards the total cost of purchasing the new smaller goals recommended by the FA for Under-11 and Under-12 matches, which became mandatory for season 2013-14. The grant scheme is only open to English Schools' Football Association (ESFA) affiliated schools, who agree to open their facilities for community use, at hire charges which are both reasonable and commensurate with normal local authority rates for the use of such facilities.

The closing date for applications is the 30th October 2014. However, there is a limited budget for this scheme so the window for applications may close early, depending on demand for the scheme.

Interactive Health Care Fund Opens for Applications (England)

Creative England has announced a new £1million fund for regional based Small and medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs), designed to stimulate creative and digital innovation in UK healthcare.

The fund aims to encourage small creative and digital businesses in the North, Midlands and South West regions to develop innovative concepts or prototypes using digital technology to improve patient care and health services. The first of four programmes to open as part of this fund is the West Midlands Interactive Healthcare Fund. This is a £250,000 fund that will offer five £50,000 investments to support projects that focus on:

Improving quality of care Caring for people with dementia Supporting people with long-term conditions Data visualisation.

Applications will be assessed on a rolling basis and the fund will close on 31 October 2014.

Funding for Artists and Bands (England)

PRS for Music Foundation and Arts Council England have announced that the next application deadline for the Momentum Music Fund is the 28th October 2014.

The Momentum Music Fund is a £500,000 fund to develop the careers of talented artists and bands. It is anticipated that grants of between £5,000 and £15,000 will be awarded to between 50 and 75 artists/bands over the next 2 years. Applications can be submitted by the artists themselves or those who are working on their behalf, e.g. a manager, an independent label or publisher. Priority will be given to those that haven't been funded by PRS for Music Foundation in the previous 12 months. The funding can support:

The purchase of a van or car International touring Shortfall/deficit funding not linked to development of a specific artist; etc.

New Community Pharmacy Partnership Fund (Northern Ireland)

The Community Development and Health Network (CDHN) has announced that a new funding stream is available through the Building the Community-Pharmacy Partnership (BCPP).

The aim of the fund is to promote and support local communities to work in partnership with community pharmacists to address local health and social wellbeing needs using a community development approach. Pharmacists who have commitment and support from a pharmacy contractor or a constituted community group or voluntary organisation can apply for either a:

Level 1 funding (up to £2,000 for projects lasting up to 9 months) Level 2 funding (up to £10,000 for projects lasting up to 2 years) Level 3 funding (up to £10,000 per year for projects lasting up to 3 years).

The deadline for Level 1 Funding applications is the 18th September 2014.

The deadline for Level 2 and Level 3 applications is the 13th November 2014.

Access Broadband Cymru Scheme Extended (Wales)

More businesses across Wales can now benefit from the Welsh Government Access Broadband Cymru scheme following changes to the scheme's rules.

Funding is available towards the delivery of faster broadband connections for businesses, residents and communities across Wales. It is targeted specifically at premises that currently receive slow broadband with a consistent download speed of less than 2Mbps. Prior to the changes, only areas not in the published Superfast Cymru roll-out were eligible. However, those based in an area which will eventually be covered by the roll-out but are currently unable to access broadband above a speed of 2MB, can now make an application. A Welsh Government funded grant to the value of 90 per cent of the cost of the proposed installation can be applied for, with a maximum grant of £900 available to eligible premises in Wales.

New Fund Launched to fight Litter and Flytipping (Scotland)

Scottish community groups have the opportunity to apply for grants of between £500 and £10,000 to help tackle flytipping within their communities. Project ideas could include:

Community clean up and prevention measures Adopt a street projects or localised awareness raising and behaviour change campaigns to

reduce some of Scotland's most commonly-littered and flytipped items.

A total of £100,000 is available through the Litter and Flytipping Community Action Fund. The fund is being delivered by Zero Waste Scotland, as part of the delivery of the Scottish Government's ambitious national litter strategy, Towards a Litter-Free Scotland.

The closing date for applications is 5pm on the 19th September 2014.

People and Communities Fund Opens for Applications (Scotland)

The Scottish Government has announced that its £9.4 million People and Communities Fund is now open for applications.

The fund promotes and supports community-led regeneration initiatives across Scotland a focus on the promotion of social inclusion and tackling poverty, including the mitigation of welfare reform. The Fund will continue to invest in community anchor organisations that deliver local regeneration activity and promote change in our most disadvantaged communities. The Fund will also support a wide range of initiatives including:

Improving financial capability Reducing the number of workless households Increasing the range of services delivered from local facilities Increasing the number of people taking up volunteering opportunities Healthy eating initiatives.

Alt-w Funding for Scottish Digital Arts (Scotland)

Artists and technologists based in Scotland can apply for grants of up to £10,000 through the Alt-w Fund.

The aim of the fund is to support the development of new artworks, devices and creative applications that challenge the notions of what new media creativity can be. The fund strongly encourages applicants to explore experimental and interactive practice, make use of technology as both platform and medium, and recognise the changing role that digital culture has in our society.

The deadline for applications is 5pm on Thursday 2nd October 2014.

Legacy 2014: Sustainable Sport for Communities Fund (Scotland)

Social Enterprises active in the field of sport have the opportunity to apply for up to £30,000 towards the direct costs of employing a Business Development Officer, or similar post.

The aim is to develop the social enterprise, its services and its financial sustainability. The funding is available for up to two years. Applications are invited from sports social enterprises that are at an early stage of considering how to make their community facility and/or services more sustainable. As well as delivering sporting activities, applicants must demonstrate that they are trying to make a wider difference in their community around health and well-being, employment and education. Successful applicants will also benefit from a range of development support which will include including mentoring, coaching, training and networking opportunities.

CashBack for Creativity: Open Arts Fund (Scotland)

YouthLink Scotland has announced the launch of the CashBack for Creativity: Open Arts Fund for 2014/15.

The Open Arts Fund is a strand of Creative Scotland's CashBack for Creativity programme which is being delivered in partnership with YouthLink Scotland. It is a part of the Scottish Government's CashBack for Communities programme which reinvests the proceeds of crime back into communities to benefit Scotland's young people. A total of £200,000 will be invested in community based arts programmes with individual proposals being able to access awards of up to £10,000. Applications are invited from organisations within the youth work sector and/or those working with young people to support the delivery of free arts activities.

The closing date for all submissions is the 19th September 2014.

Funding Reminders

EU Announces New Fostering Integration through Culture Funding Scheme (UK)

The European Commission has announced a new call for proposals to foster European integration through culture by providing new subtitled versions of selected TV programmes across all Europe.

The objective of this call for proposals is to try out innovative strategies for the provision of subtitled versions of European cultural programming to facilitate cross-border online dissemination of cultural content. Specifically, the expected outcome of this pilot is the provision of a minimum of 600 hours of diverse, European-subtitled factual audiovisual content, online, in several territories, as well as assessing the subsequent impact of this content. Proposals must be submitted by applicants providing a non-linear audiovisual media or web service with a critical mass of audiovisual content. The budget of the scheme is €1.5 million and it is expected that one to three proposals will be selected.

The deadline for applications is 12 noon on the 24th September 2014 (Brussels time).

Funding to Enable Disadvantaged Young People Reach their Potential (UK)

Registered charities that work with disadvantaged children under the age of 25 can apply for funding of up to £10,000 through the Ironmongers Company’s grants programme. In particular the company wants to support projects that provide opportunities for disadvantaged children and young people to fulfil their potential and educational activities that develop learning, motivation and skills.

Projects could, for example:

Support special educational needs Address behavioural problems Promote citizenship, parenting or life skills.

Preference will be given to projects piloting new approaches where the outcomes will be disseminated to a wider audience. Although the grants are available within the UK preference is given to projects in inner London.

Free Trees for School, Community and Youth Groups (UK)

The Woodland Trust has 4000 free tree packs to give away to schools, community and youth groups this autumn. The free tree packs are available for planting on one publicly accessible site.

The packs available are:

Small (30 saplings) Medium (105 saplings) Large (420 saplings).

Packs will be awarded on a first come first serve basis. All applicants need to do is find a suitable site and supply the volunteer planters and tree protection. This August marks the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War. The Trust would like organisations, schools and groups to take part in a once-in-a-generation tribute to all those who gave their lives by creating a growing legacy that will stand tall for centuries to come. Over the next four years the Trust are offering three million free trees to help communities, schools and youth groups remember their local heroes. Register now to receive your free trees and create special, living memorials.

The Ernest Cook Trust Grants Programme (UK)

Schools, charities and not for profit organisations wishing to encourage young people's interest in the countryside and the environment, the arts or aiming to raise levels of literacy and numeracy can apply for funding to the Ernest Cook Trust (ECT).

The Trust operates two grant making programmes. The small grants programme (under £4,000) supports state schools and small registered charities which would like to undertake projects which meet the Trust's objectives and require a small amount of pump-priming in order for such projects to take place and a larger grants programme for grants in excess of £4,000. Meetings to consider applications for the small grants programme take place bi-monthly throughout the year. The full board of Trustees meets twice a year, in April and September, to consider grants in excess of £4,000. Commission Announces €100 Million Fast Track to Innovation Grants Programme and Five Innovation Prizes (UK)

The European Commission has announced details of a new €100 million "Fast Track to Innovation" (FTI) pilot action and five innovation prizes under Horizon 2020, the European Union's €80 billion research and innovation programme.

The FTI aims to support Europe's economy by offering innovative businesses and organisations grants to give a final push to get great ideas to market. The prizes offer a reward for technological breakthroughs of high societal relevance. The Fast Track to Innovation scheme will be open to applications from January 2015. It will support small consortia of three to five organisations with strong business participation to give promising ideas the last push before entering the market. It is open to ideas in any area of technology or application and to any legal entity established in the EU or in a country associated to Horizon 2020.The contests for the five innovation prizes will start in late 2014 and early 2015. The prizes, worth €6 million in 2015, cover three different thematic areas of research: health ("Reduction of the Use of Antibiotics Prize", "Food-Scanner Prize"), the environment ("Reduction of Air Pollution Prize") and ICT ("Collaborative Sharing of Spectrum", "Optical Transmission Prize").

Funding to Enhance Community Facilities (England, Scotland and Wales)

Under the Sita Trust's Enhancing Communities Programme Core Fund, grants of up to £60,000 are available to not for profit organisations, community groups, schools, parish councils, local authorities and charities for projects that make physical improvements to community facilities and historic buildings / structures.

SITA will accept applications from projects which are within 3 miles of qualifying SITA UK waste processing sites. Grants of up to £20,000 are also available through their Fast Track Fund for projects with an overall cost of no more than £40,000. Projects on school or pre-school sites where the facilities will primarily benefit the school are not eligible. However, an application may be considered from a school if it can be clearly demonstrated that the wider community has significant opportunities to use the facility and the facility is run by an organisation that is separate from the school (although the school may be represented); and access to the facility for community use must be via an entrance that is separate from the school.

Funding for the Commercialisation of Research (UK)

The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) has announced that it is seeking applications through its follow-on Fund.

The aim of the Fund is to support the commercialisation of ideas arising from previous research. The fund is open to researchers with current or past BBSRC funding. Applications for follow-on support must build on the outputs of previous BBSRC-funded research activity. There are two schemes to apply for:

The Follow-on Fund Pathfinder which is available to carry out work that will help develop a greater understanding of the commercial potential and possibilities of research. Pathfinder Grants are usually up to £20,000 and supports projects up to 6 months in duration.

The Standard Follow-on Fund scheme where applications must demonstrate a sound understanding of the market opportunity. Grants can be up to £250,000 for projects lasting between 12 and 18 months.

There is also the Super Follow-on scheme. However, applications are by invitation only. The closing date for applications is the 23rd September 2014.

Biochemical Society Scientific Outreach Grants (UK)

The Biochemical Society has announced that grants of up to £1,000 are available to support scientific outreach events that communicate the excitement of molecular bioscience to young people and the community.

Applications for funding are invited to assist with the direct costs associated with an event and expenses incurred (e.g. transport and/or teacher cover). The Biochemical Society must be acknowledged at the event and in the resources produced. The Wellcome Trust is inviting organisations and individuals to apply for funding through its Arts Awards.

The Arts Awards support projects that engage the public with biomedical science through the arts including:

Shale Gas Extraction Feasibility Studies Fund (UK)

The Technology Strategy Board has launched a £2 million Shale Gas Extraction Feasibility Studies Fund to develop innovative technologies for the safe and responsible exploitation of the UK's shale gas.

The fund is looking to support projects in a number of key technology areas, which will help to develop a UK shale gas supply chain to serve both a UK and global market in a safe and sustainable manner. Projects must be business-led, and the competition is open to companies of any size, although SMEs are particularly encouraged to apply. Projects can be collaborative or developed by a single business and ideally should involve technology transfer from other sectors, for example from the ICT, digital, space and high value manufacturing sectors. Feasibility studies (pre-industrial research projects) in which a business partner will generally attract up to 65% public funding for their project costs (75% for SMEs) are expected to be funded. Research organisations can participate as partners, but cannot lead a project. Projects should last between six and 12 months costs from £50,000 to £150,000.

Community Food Fund (Scotland)

Scotland's Rural College has announced that the next round of the Community Food Fund is open for applications.

The Fund aims to promote local food and drink through supporting activities that focus on two main outcomes. These are:

The Forest Education Initiative Project Grants specifically to support the work of local groups known as Forest Education Initiative (FEI) clusters.

Through the scheme, grants of up to £5,000 are available . The aim of the scheme is to support the work of FEI Cluster Groups working in local communities to promote the overall objectives of FEI. These are to increase the understanding and appreciation, particularly among young people, of the environmental, social, and economic potential of trees, woodlands and forests and of the link between the tree and everyday wood products. These aim to help develop among young people a greater understanding of trees, woodlands, forest management, forest products and wood as a sustainable resource. There will be two or three bidding rounds each year depending on availability of funding. Only FEI Cluster Groups that are accredited can apply to the fund.

The RGF will provide £34million of recoverable grants to help higher education institutions (HEIs) in England reduce carbon emissions and save money. The round will be run in partnership with Salix Finance, a company specialising in providing interest free loans to public sector organisations for energy efficiency. HEIs can apply for funding to implement both small and large scale carbon saving projects and, for the first time, water reduction projects. Funding for small scale projects will be between £50,000 and £750,000 and around £2 million for large scale projects.

The Lloyds Bank Foundation for England & Wales has announced the launch of two new grants programmes to replace its flagship "Communities Programme". The aim is to support projects that help people over the age of 17 who are experiencing multiple disadvantage at one of the critical points in their life.

The new funding programmes are:

"Invest" which is a flexible, long term core funding programme for charities helping disadvantaged people. Grants are up to £25,000 per year for two or three years, with the opportunity for continuation funding for up to six years in total.

"Enable" which is a smaller and shorter grants programme for charities that have identified clear development needs. This funding aims to help the organisations deliver their mission more effectively. These grants are up to a total £15,000 over two years. The funding is available to registered charities and charitable incorporated organisations (CIOs) with an income of between £25,000 and £1 million.

To be eligible, organisations are expected to be working with people 17 years or older, experiencing multiple disadvantage at one of the critical points in their life. The only exceptions are young people who are under 17 years of age and young parents or looked after children and disabled young people moving into independent living.

There are no closing dates and applications can be submitted at any time.

Near Neighbours Programme Re-Opens for Applications (England)

The Department for Communities & Local Government has re-opened its Near Neighbours small grants programme.

Launched in 2011 in partnership with the Church Urban Fund, Near Neighbours provides small grants of between £250 and £5,000 to grassroots groups and multi-faith communities. Funding will be available to communities with significant religious diversity to help them run projects which will bring about lasting benefits to their neighbourhoods. Charities, religious organisations, Community Interest Companies, social enterprises and groups of individuals focusing on community benefit will be eligible to apply.

Fair Trade Wales – Small Grants Scheme (Wales)

Fair Trade Wales has announced that thanks to renewed funding by the Welsh Government, they are now able to award a total of £11,000 in small grants of up to £500 for Fair Trade projects or events in Wales. There are three different themes to apply for. These are:

Fair Trade and Young People Try Something New Campaigns and Events. Fair Trade groups are the backbone of the movement and it is

important that applicants demonstrate how they might work with one locally.

Applications can range from funding for a local Fair Trade stall or a campaign to help local businesses switch, to involving local Youth Groups in Fairtrade.
