Who is Doc Maynard Doc Maynard, one of Seattle’s

founding fathers, was born in Castleton, Vermont in 1808. His name was David Swinson Maynard. He entered medical school at the age of 17. He was an exciting, enthusiastic person who had great personality. Doc Maynard died in Seattle in 1873.

What did he do to help Seattle

Maynard traveled from Ohio to California in a wagon train. On the way Doc Maynard saved the Broshears party and married a widow from the party named Cathrine Broshears. Then he went to Olympia and on March 31, 1852 he arrived on duamps in a canoe paddled by Chief Seattle.At that time it was called Duwamps.

At duwamps he made his first homestead which became pioneer sqare. He earned money by salting salmon and chopping down trees. He also named Seattle after his friend chief seattle , gave Yesler AVEnue to him for his sawmill when he arrived in duamps. And he founded the first general store. He was a surveyor and he and denny could not reach agreement and filled conflicting plats on may 23 the legacy survives in the tangle of mismatched roads along yesler way.
