E73 Choosing a Safe Vehicle

• What factors other than safety do people consider when buying a car?– People typically consider looks (color, style),

price, cargo size, how many passengers it can fit, and fuel economy. It is likely that some people will say the looks of the car are the most important feature, although some may feel the performance or price are the most important.

E73 Choosing a Safe Vehicle

• 4. Do you think car features can:• a. reduce damage, injuries, and fatalities in car

accidents? Explain.– Most students will think that such features as seat belts or

airbags reduce the effects of accidents by padding the impact.• b. prevent accidents? Explain.

– Most students think such features as brakes that function well or mirrors and visors that improve the driver’s ability to see can prevent accidents. Depending on the class discussion, others may also mention that less height can prevent rollovers and that better handling (or even greater acceleration) can help drivers avoid accidents.
