Does the word “Emmaus” ring a bell? It is the name of a village seven miles from Jerusalem to which some disciples were walking on the first Easter morning. This resurrection story is recounted in Luke 24 and is a powerful narrative about how Jesus was recognized in the breaking of the bread after he interpreted the Scriptures for them. You may not have heard this gospel proclaimed unless you went to an Easter Mass later in the day or to Mass last Wednesday. There are many fascinating details to this story as the disciples go from being downcast to coming to recognize the Risen Lord, but my favorite line is what the two disciples said to each other: “Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?” As the Octave (8 Days) of Easter ends today and we celebrate First Communion/Eucharist, it might be good to remember how our hearts have been touched since the beginning of Holy Week.

Some “heartwarming” experiences that come to mind for me include: A few lines from the proclamation of the Passion on Palm Sunday and Good Friday, especially the denials by Peter and the dialogue between Jesus and Pilate. Heartfelt confessions made during our Communal Reconciliation Service and individual times during Holy Week. Processing in to the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday and seeing the faith-filled participation from a great mix of parishioners from both SJW & HF. Preparing and giving the homilies for Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter. Observing and praying for parishioners as they venerated the cross at the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday. Suspending any concern about time as we celebrated the Easter Vigil and entering into each of the four parts – fire/light, Word, water and Eucharist. Discovering plastic Easter eggs, filled with notes and candy, in the flower garden by my back door (thanks unknown Easter bunny!). Spending time with my family on Easter afternoon/evening.

You may also enjoy this story about recognizing Christ in daily life from Take Five for Faith: “It had been a long day and the first-graders were running their teacher ragged. The dismissal bell rang and the children sped out the door. The teacher shepherded them out, then sat wearily on a bench watching them go. A child waiting for her big brother to walk her home watched the teacher, then wandered over. She sat beside her and carefully opened her lunch bag. She unwrapped the sandwich and, with her small hands, broke it in two. She looked up at the teacher and handed her half, saying, ‘I get tired and hungry after school, too. Here.’” What are your Easter Emmaus experiences?

Sincerely in Christ,

P.S. Great news: As of Easter Sunday, we collected $14,177.45 for St. Lucie’s School in Haiti, our sister parish; this goes well beyond the goal and should be a big help for Father Harold. Thank you very much!!

P.P.S. Yes, I am an authorized seller for the “Lucky 20” Raffle … hint, hint.
