Do Guys Wear Engagement Rings ?

Depending on whom you ask the answer to that question will be different. Traditionally, men propose to women with an engagement ring. Once it is accepted, the ring becomes a symbol of their engagement.

In some instances, the woman would present a gift to the man – such as a wrist watch, cufflinks, or a wallet. The idea of a man’s engagement ring, especially in Western countries, was unheard of…until recently.

What is a man’s engagement ring?

Men’s engagement rings are not like a woman’s engagement ring. They are more modest looking, and are often simple bands with an engraving.

According to a recent study conducted by The Knot, 77 percent of men in 2011 proposed on bended knee, and 71 percent asked the bride’s parents

for permission before popping the question. This is an increase from 2008 and 2009 numbers, suggesting that men are returning to traditional norms.

In addition, this same study found that 5 percent of men have begun to wear engagement rings along with their bride. Time will tell whether or not this trend will become popular.

Response to Men’s Engagement Rings

There is often a negative response to men’s engagement rings. However, in many different countries and cultures it is common for both men and women to wear engagement rings. For example, in many Lutheran sects, the man wears an engagement ring, which resembles a plain wedding band. This ring often becomes the man’s wedding band after marriage.

In many Latin American countries, both the man and the woman wear a band on their right hand during the course of their engagement. On their wedding day, they take the band and switch it to their left hand, signifying that they are married.

As you can see, even though men’s engagement rings are a new trend in the United States, they have been an age-old tradition in other parts of the world.

Men’s Jewelry Market

According to Time.com the men’s jewelry market accounts for 20 percent of high-end jewelry expenditure. Since 5 percent of men do wear engagement rings along with their fiancés, it is plausible to assume that as men’s jewelry market increases, so would the demand for men’s engagement rings.

This, of course, does not mean that a man who does not normally wear jewelry would not want to do the same. However, when it comes to symbolism, practically anything can become a symbol. For example, a man might choose to engrave his wristwatch as a way to showcase his love.

There are many ways a man can express his love other than wearing an engagement ring. On the other hand, whether or not a man should wear an engagement ring is up to the couple.

What is your opinion on this topic? Should a man wear an engagement ring?
