It gives me great pleasure to present the annual report for the academic year 2016/2017. I accepted my appointment by the Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton T.D. as Chairperson of the Governing Body in October 2016.

During this 2016/2017 year, the Institute achieved a Category 1 in its performance evaluation under a Compact with the HEA for the third year running. This achievement again recognises the quality of the higher education and student experience provided by the Institute and its staff.

On 1st April 2017, the Institute celebrated the 20th anniversary of its establishment. An event was held with staff, students and all of my predecessors as Chairpersons of the Governing Body, along with the Institute President and her predecessors to mark the occasion.

The Governing Body approved a new Campus Master Plan for the Institute to provide for the future growth of the student population. When implemented, this ambitious Plan will provide for the growth of the student population to approximately 3,700 students.

I wish to thank my colleagues on the Governing Body for their commitment to the Institute during the year.

Finally, I wish to thank the staff of the Institute for their commitment and dedication to the Institute and I wish to congratulate them on their achievements.

The academic year 2016/17 was another successful one for IADT. It was a great achievement for the Governing Body, staff and students for the Institute to be awarded Category 1 status for the third year running in our annual HEA Compact, particularly in a climate of continued national financial and resource constraints.

IADT’s focus on internationalisation developed in 2016/17 with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with George Brown College, Toronto and the validation of a joint MA degree in Interdisciplinary Design Strategies with George Brown College in November 2016. IADT was also successful in achieving Erasmus+ funding for international partnerships in Europe, Canada and Russia. IADT also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the French Embassy in Dublin around future collaborations. In 2017, IADT was the official production partner of ‘Tremble Tremble’, Ireland’s entry at the Venice Biennale.

The Institute’s links with Further Education continue to grow with 2016/17 seeing the signing of formal Memoranda of Understanding around course development and progression opportunities with Sallynoggin College of Further Education, Stillorgan College of Further Education and the Dún Laoghaire Institute of Further Education. Our relationship with Sound Training College in Temple Bar took a further step forward with the introduction of a Level 8 programme in Creative Music Production.

Our staff and students continue to win awards and participate in industry and media projects, including IADT students designing costumes for the RTÉ Late Late Toy Show aired in December 2016.

The Honorary Fellow Awards entered their third year, with awards presented to Lenny Abrahamson (Film Director) and Niall Breslin (Musician).

The Plan highlights the importance of strengthening links between further education and higher education to widen access opportunities and support for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, mature students and those with learning difficulties and disabilities. The Strategic Priorities include enhancing the profile and position of the National Film School (NFS) as the primary centre of film education and practice-based research nationally, and to build recognition for the NFS internationally.

The Higher Education Authority (HEA) has recommended that all higher education institutions should achieve an Athena SWAN award within 3 years and that research-funding agencies should require HEIs to have attained a bronze Athena SWAN award within 3 years and a silver award within 7 years in order to be eligible for funding.

IADT is strongly commited to advancing and prioritising equality and diversity across all areas of IADT and will take proactive steps to achieve this.
