WELCOME Welcome to our Winter Groups and Education Guide. We have an exciting line-up over the next few months featuring some fantastic new shows that are perfect for your group or school bookings in 2018.
Michael Grandage Company return with two new productions, directed by Artistic Director Michael Grandage. Award-winning stage and screen actor Alfred Molina reprises his critically acclaimed performance in Red as the American abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko at Wyndham’s Theatre from 4 May.
Aidan Turner, best known for playing the title role in the BBC hit series Poldark, returns to the West End to play Padraic in a rare revival of Martin McDonagh’s critically acclaimed, brilliant satire on terrorism, The Lieutenant of Inishmore at the Noël Coward Theatre from 23 June.
After rapturous critical acclaim and a sell-out season at The Old Vic, Girl from the North Country now transfers to the West End for a strictly limited season. Award-winning playwright Conor McPherson beautifully weaves the iconic songbook of Bob Dylan into this powerful new show full of hope, heartbreak and soul.
We also offer a wide range of educational activities and resources for schools including practical workshops, post show talks and backstage tours. Our dedicated team will guide you through the booking process, making the whole experience as smooth and efficient as possible.
We look forward to welcoming you to a Delfont Mackintosh Theatre very soon.
ROSALIE CRAIG CHATS TO OUR GROUP SALES TEAM AHEAD OF STARRING IN MARIANNE ELLIOTT’S UPCOMING PRODUCTION OF COMPANY
Is Company a show you know well? What attracted you to it?
I feel lucky to be able to say I do know Company well after having played Marta in the Sheffield Crucible production. However, I knew it before I was part of that production as its one of Sondheim’s most celebrated and beautiful pieces. It is an exquisite musical and I think it really is Sondheim at his best.
Who came up with the idea of making the central role of male Bobby into female Bobbi?
I was approached by the director Marianne Elliott in the canteen of The National whilst I was on a dinner break when I was performing in The Threepenny Opera. She was in the middle of casting her amazing production of Angels in America. She asked me what I thought of the idea of Bobby being a female as I’d done the production before. We had various conversations about it but at no point did I dream she would ask me to play Bobbi. I thought I just had inside knowledge of the piece having worked on it before so presumed she just wanted to pick my brains. But I believe the idea of the gender swap came from producer Chris Harper - who then suggested it Marianne and the rest is history!
How much will change from the original? Will other characters also change gender this time?
I think making Bobbi a female means the entire identity of the piece will inevitably change but not remotely to the detriment of the show. In fact it modernises it beautifully. Other characters will switch gender too and it just feels like it casts a
new perspective on the piece and brings it right into the here and now.
Have you met and/or worked with Stephen Sondheim himself yet?
I have met Sondheim - but only from afar. I was in the ENO’s production of Sweeney Todd and he came to watch and support us in that. In fact, this will be my 4th Sondheim production and I can’t wait!
How differently do you prepare for a play in comparison to a musical? And what is your career highlight to-date?
The preparation is no different. Text is text - whether spoken or sung. I absolutely believe there is no distinction between the two. In fact you have to work a lot harder in a musical to make the spoken word feel believable and part of the same thought - as if you were doing a long monologue or scene. My career highlight is hard to choose - all of the shows at the National Theatre I’ve done have been highlights for me.
Are there any other Sondheim roles on your ‘I want to play….’ wish list?
Yes - All of them!
You worked with your husband, Hadley Fraser, on the musical City of Angels was it fun to work together? Do you plan to do so again?
It was wonderful to work together - I admire him so much and think he’s astonishing so it was a joy to work alongside him and his brilliance. And we had a hoot over Christmas time too so it was win win! It was a joy from start to finish that show, I absolutely love the Donmar. I’d love to work with him again - I hope we get the opportunity to.
Starring alongside you in Company is Broadway Legend Patti LuPone! Have you seen her perform on stage before? Have you met her yet?
I mean - this is too exciting for words! She is dynamite. I haven’t been fortunate enough to see her live. I have listened to her and watched her on YouTube forever. I can’t wait to meet her, although I will probably faint when I do.
What was the last West End show you saw and what would you recommend for our readers to see?
I just saw Beginning at The National. It was utterly compelling and theatre at its absolute best. I’ve just seen Elliott & Harper’s first West End production - Heisenberg: The Uncertainty Principle at the Wyndham’s Theatre. Everyone should see that - directed by Marianne Elliott and written by Simon Stephens, a cast to die for - Kenneth Cranham and Anne-Marie Duff - now that’s something you don’t want to miss.
Tell us why our group bookers MUST come and see Company.
Because it’s Sondheim at his absolute BEST. The music, the story, Patti LuPone, seeing this production re-imagined to bring it right into 2018 - the genius direction of Marianne Elliott and designs from the brilliant Bunny Christie. I can’t find a single reason not to see it. If I wasn’t in it I would have bought 100 tickets already.

The Phantom of the Opera
Seen by over 100 million people worldwide, this multi-award-winning musical continues to captivate audiences at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End.
Far beneath the majesty and splendour of the Paris Opera House, hides the Phantom in a shadowy existence. Shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all, the love he holds for his beautiful protégée Christine Daaé is so strong that even her heart cannot resist.
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s mesmerising score magically combines with jaw-dropping scenery and breathtaking special effects to bring this tragic love story to life each night.
