1. INTRODUCTION

Information relating to the safety:

The motor starter uses high voltages and currents and serves, once integrated in a system, to control mechanical equipment which may cause grievous bodily harm.

An extreme attention is required during the electrical installation and the design of the system in order to avoid any risks, both under normal operation and in the event of a faulty operation of the motor starter.

The design of the system, the installation, the comissionning and the mainte-nance of the motor starter must be done exclusively by qualified staff.

The designer of the system is the sole person responsable for the safety, he/she must ensure that it is designed according to the current safety standards.

He/she must read carefully the information related to the safety marked in this manual by the following symboles:

All the instruments of the range DMS-2 and DMS-3 have integrated by-pass relays.

Thanks to these relays, the current moves through the thyristors only during the start or stop phases.Once the start up is completed the internal derivation will transfer the line current to the by-pass relays. This system allows to increase the life time of the motor starter, limit its size and its dissipated power.

The fuses F and the line contactor KM1 are optional.

The relay 1 must be programmed in mode MAIN POWER (see page 31)(1)

CAUTION:On the first use or after a mechanical shock or a brutal an-dling, the status of the bypass relays may be undeterminated before setting the product on tension. If the wiring diagram does not use a KM1 contactor the motor starter must be powered first, and then 30s later connected to the 3-phase network, to prevent it from starting directly on full tension (bypass relays tight).

WARNING:The STOP status of the motor starter does not insulate from dangerous voltages on the outputs T1, T2, T3 and the con-tact inputs START and STOP (terminals 7, 8 and 9).The line voltage must be interrupted by a conform electrical insulation system before the access to the electrical connec-tions is allowed.

CAUTION:The motor starter has on its radiator a terminal for connec-tion to the earth which has to be connected to the system GND.

NOTE:The range of motor starters DMS-2 and DMS-3 comply with the standard IEC609-47-4-2 relating to electronic soft motor starters. These starters include in standard an electronic protection againste motor overloads based on an algorythm of the type i²t.It will protect the motor, the starter and the supply wires from the overheating caused by an overintensity. The start up class in case of overload is programmable with the parameter TRIP CLASS page 28.An external motor protection system is therefore unnecessary.

Page 9: DMS2 / DMS3 - ARDETEM SFEREDMS2 DMS3 H 174.0 223.0 L 91.5 147.0 D 177.0 173.0 Weight (g) 2160 4450 Mounting Wall plate Wall plate Power connectors on terminals L1, L2, L3 and T1, T2,

If the installation has a power factor correction system, it must be connected before the motor starter (on the mains side).

Power factor correction

2. THE VARIOUS MOTOR CONTROL MODES

There are mainly 3 modes of control and stop/start of the motor:- local mode by using the µconsole- remote mode by closure of the contacts on the START/STOP logic inputs- remote mode by sending control sequences on the digital data link RS485 (if the option N is present).

Local mode:The local control mode can be accessed by way of the µconsole.A “LOCAL” led lights up to indicate that this mode is active.

CAUTION:In this case the remote mode controls (contact closure or RS485) will not be taken into account. The LOCAL mode takes precedence over the remote modes.

The local mode needs to be authorised in programming by the parameter CTRLE MODE (see page 15).

Remote mode:- On contact inputThe starter can be controlled indifferently with 1 or 2 external contacts.

WARNING:The contacts must absolutely be potential free. The insulation resistance between the phases L1, L2 and L3 is only 1MOhm, hence the potential of these contact inputs may in case of fault become DANGEROUS for the user.

0 tSTART UP TIME

I_INIT: initial start currentI_MAX: maximum current allowed during the start upI_NOM: nominal motor current obtained at the end of the cycle

The maximum current applied to the motor dur-ing a start ramp can be limited. This will slow down the opening process of the thyristors, to prevent the measured current from becoming greater than the maximum allowed current. The final start up time can hence be longer than the defined ramp time.CAUTION an excessive start up time can ex-ceed the motor thermic capacity and damage it.Therefore this parameter needs to be adjusted to a value a little greater than the normal total start up time to obtain an optimum protection of the motor.

Note:The effective duration (T1 + T2 + T3) of the start up is indicated in the measure screen n°7 (LAST START p47).The parameter LIMIT TIME must be greater than this total duration T1 + T2 + T3.

(1) The access to the simulation functions can be protected by the same ac-cess code as the one used for the modification of the parameters. For this purpose the code must be specific (see the menu CODE page 18).Once this code has been entered correctly it will no more be requested as long as the user presses a key at least every 10 minutes and does not re-move the µconsole.

At the delivery of the product, the access to the simulation functions is not protected.(2) Simulation of the measures:In order to test the reaction of the product and its output options (analog, relay and digital outputs) the value of a measure can be enforced even if the product is not connected to an electrical network.

CAUTION:In the case of the simulation each measure is no more linked with the others. For instance a current value increased by 50% in simulation will not increase the active power by 50%.When you enter the simulation of the measures, all the measures will remain fixed at their value preceding the moment where this mode has been validated, and only the selected measure will be able to be modified by the keyboard.

IMPORTANT NOTE:The fact that you are in simulation of the measures will prevent any exter-nal START or STOP action. It is therfore impossible to command the motor when you are in mode simulation.

However, the motor may react and enter in alarm (see ALARM page 54) if the simulated measure values provoque an error. For example, a too high simulated line current value may trigger the thermic overload error.

CAUTION:The simulation of the power will modify the value of the active energy coun-ter (counter ENERGY page 48).

The active simulation mode is indicated by the blinking of the red LOCAL led.The product may be leaved in mode simulation without necessarily having a µconsole connected.

List of the simulatable measures:Umoy Average line voltageImoy Average line currentImax Maximum line currentPtot Total active powerQtot Total reactive powerStot Total apparent powerCOS Power factorFREQ Frequency%mot estimated thermic overload for the motorTscr maximum estimated temperature for the thyristors(3) Simulation of the errors:The appearing of an internal error can be enforced in order to test the reac-tion of the product and its output options (analog, relay and digital outputs) even if the product is not connected to an electrical network.

On the contrary of the mode measure simulation, the product will not be blocked. The corresponding error will be simulated furtively at each validation of an error selected in the list.

NOTE:Most of the simulated errors will be recorded and will need to be acknowl-edged the same way as if they had really happened. If an error is simulated while the motor is running at full speed, the motor starter will instantly cut the motor power supply.List of the simulatable errors:RUPT rupture of 1 or several phasesPHASE error in the phase ranks (the motor is running the reverse way to the programmed direction)TIME time allowed for the start up endedMEAS error sent by a relay assigned to a measure parameter (see page 37)TEMP the estimated junction T° of a thyristor has exceeded the critical pointTHERM the calculated thermic overload has been reachedPROG programming error detected on the motor starterCAL internal calibration error (dedicated factory parameters) detected on the motor starterThe 3 last errors are unrecorded system errors. NOTEAll the errors which can be acknowledged will be recorded and remain visible and blocking for the next start up, even if the event which triggered the error disappears.Likewise, if the error still exists when it is acknowledged it will immediately be reactivated (measure still out of range, thermic pattern still outside the limits etc...).In this case you must wait for the concerned measure to come back below the defined setpoint. The list of the errors in the table defines a priority rank (from 0 for POWER LINE ERROR to 8 for CALIB ERROR).In case of multiple errors, only the highest priority error will be shown.

(1) CAUTION:This error can not be acknowledged as long as the calculated capacity is greater than the defined setpoint. When the motor is stopped, this thermic capacity decreases slowly in an exponential way. After an error simulation you have the possibility to accelerate the revert to 0 of this value via the menu RESET/THERM (see page 50).Once the value of the motor thermic capacity is below the defined setpoint the error can be acknowledged.
