Preliminary Stage

Support
Send initial email to SME, with attached Course Development Guidelines, reference to ESW, etc.
Contract Admin. draft new contact and mails it to SME
Work with Deans to Determine Course Development Needs
Work with Deans to select SME and establish a Development Advisory Committee
Update databases on SharePoint
Inform Contract Admin. regarding new contract
Contract Admin. scan signed contract; upload electronic copy to database on SharePoint; place paper copy in file
D2L Admin. create course shell in dev. area (including course template)
D2L Admin. send login information to SME via email; CCs ID
Attend training workshop
Meet with ID and
Development Advisory
Committee
Inform Faculty Trainer that SME is developing a new course
Contacts D2L Admin. to have a course shell created in development area
Meet with ID team regarding development assignment
Inform IDS regarding Development Advisory Committee
Development Advisory Committee provide assistance as needed
Contact SME via telephone to establish timeline for course development
Faculty Trainer assess what training is required and make the appropriate arrangements
Work with ID to establish timeline for course development
Facilitate meeting between SME and Dev. Advisory Committee via teleconference or videoconference
Contact the Instructional Design Specialist (IDS) regarding development assignment
Sign development contract and return it to DL center

ID use Course Matrix to set up file structure. This is also used to determine what learning tools may be needed.

Following PIRS, the
overall structure of the
course is laid out prior
to development.
Update Development Log and report progress to IDS via email

Meet with IDs for regular updates on development progress
Support
Convert course content to online format
Work with ID to provide images, graphs, audio, video, etc., as deemed appropriate for course.
Address any problems with
production
Work with SME to provide images, graphs, audio, video, etc., as deemed appropriate for course.
Prepare course content in MS-Word format (Proofread for spelling and grammar)
Send content to ID via email (i.e., one unit at a time, as it is completed).
Review content in D2L and
provided feedback/
suggestions as per schedule
Meets with ID a minimum
of one session per week via
telephone as per
development agreement
Upload content to D2L (i.e., one unit at a time, as it is completed).
Report any problems with production to Chair
Inform SME via email that unit has been uploaded
Make any necessary edits
Helpdesk Personnel provide support for SME as needed
Meet with SME a minimum of one session per week via telephone (Note: sessions are to be logged).
Review content to ensure it follows PIRS, the objective is addressed, etc.
Development Advisory Committee review content at appropriate intervals (see timeline)
Log development progress and provide report at monthly ID meeting
Contact media specialist as needed
Media Specialist provide support as needed
Report any problems with production to IDS

Inform D2L Admin. course has been signed off and requests it be moved from the development area to the Master Course List.
Support
Inform IDS that production on course is completed and ready for QA/QC review
Address any outstanding issues, if necessary
If possible, teach course first time it is offered and suggest any necessary revisions in consultation with ID
Create course backup on Shared Network Drive and CD (place CD in paper file)
Do QA/QC review and provide feedback to ID
Sign off course and inform ID that it has been signed off
D2L Admin. move course from development area to Master Course list.
Update databases on SharePoint
Inform Bookstore of textbook requirements
Bookstore contact SME/instructor to confirm textbook requirements and place order
Work with SME to “fine tune” course
Showcase course in quarterly ID meeting
Report course development
completion to Dean
Send thank-you letter to
Development Advisory
Committee members
Create acknowledgements page in D2L (SME and Advisory Committee)
Identify show case items for upcoming quarterly ID meeting
Inform Chair that course development is completed

Provide ongoing support and make any necessary revisions to course
