lHalloween is on October 31st. Halloween has been a festival for more than 2000 years

now! The people of the Celts had a New Year’s party on November 1st. They said that the

Year has two parts: summer and winter. So when summer ended and winter started they

celebrated.

They thought that in the night before winter dead people, witches and ghosts come to the

world and play tricks. They wanted that the ghosts, witches and dead people go away. So

they had costumes to scare them. They also made fi res. They cut faces in pumpkins and

put candles inside. They said the name of the pumpkins with candles inside is “Jack-o’-

Lantern”.

Today on Halloween children wear costumes. They are ghosts, witches or skeletons. They

go from house to house and say “Trick or Treat”. When people don’t give them

a treat (sweets) they play a trick.

Teenagers often have Halloween parties. They wear costumes, too.

Normally the one with the best costume gets a prize. And there are

Witches

The moon was lost behind a cloud,

When something weird went by,

I tried to see it going,

It fl ew so fast and high,

I don‘t believe in witches,

But that is what I saw,

Sailing high up in the sky

On a broom stick made of straw.

The stars were gone,

The night was dark,

When something strange took place,

I could not quite believe it,

There was a gruesome face.

I don‘t believe in zombies,

But that is what I saw,

A skeleton with corpselike face,

I viewed it with awe.

Walk Into My Parlorby Mary Howitt

„Will you walk into my parlor?“

said the spider to the fl y;

„Tis the prettiest little parlor that you ever did spy.

The way into my parlor is up a winding stair,

And I have many curious things to show when you are there.“

„Oh no, no!“ said the little fl y,

„to ask me is in vain;

For who goes up your winding stair

can never come down again.“

lJack-o'-Lantern

1. Read the Story.

The story of Jack-o’-Lantern

Once there was a man. His name was Jack. Jack was not a

good man. One day the devil came to him to take him to hell.

“Oh, no”, said Jack. “Please, let me have one last drink.”

“Ok,” said the devil.

“I don’t have money”, said Jack. “Can you give me a sixpence?”

The devil had no money, but he turned himself into a coin.

Jack put the coin into his wallet. There was a silver cross and

the devil could not get out.

“Don’t come after me for another year”, Jack said, “if you agree, I’ll let you go.”

When the year was over the devil came again. Jack said: “Please devil, let me eat one last apple!

Can you pick one for me?”

But when the devil climbed on the tree, Jack cut a cross in the bark and the devil could not get

off. “If you agree never to take my soul, I’ll let you go.”

So the devil promised never to come to Jack again.

One day Jack died. He was a bad man all his life. So he could not go to heaven. And he could not

go to hell – because of the devil’s promise.

So his soul wandered lonely on earth at night. The devil felt sorry for him and gave him a burning

coal. Jack put this coal in a pumpkin to light his way.

An interview with Jack-o’-Lantern

“Good morning, Jack! The devil came to you twice, but he could not take you to hell. Can you tell

me the two tricks?”

“Good morning, the tricks were easy. When the devil fi rst came to me …

… I said that I wanted a drink. But I had no money. So the devil turned into a coin. I put

him in my wallet. There was a cross. The devil could not get out. He promised to let me

go for another year.

In the second year I asked him to give me an apple from the apple tree. When he was on

the tree, I cut a cross in the bark. The devil could not get off the tree. Then he promised

never to come after me again.”

“Now you are dead and you can’t go to heaven – why?

“Because I was not a good man in my life.”

“But you can’t go to hell, too. Why?”

“The devil promised not to take me in hell.”

“Why do you have a burning coal?”

“I cannot go to heaven and I cannot go to hell. Now I have to walk forever on earth

at night. The devil felt sorry for me and gave me the burning coal. I can put it into

my pumpkin. So I can light my way.”

“Thank you very much for the interview!”
