Using both inductive and deductive methods, it approaches organizational processes at individual, group, and organization levels respectively. To develop students’ holistic knowledge in the field, it establishes an interdisciplinary framework within which subject matters are examined and concepts are reviewed from perspectives of organization, management, sociology, anthropology and social psychology. (1) The course analyzes individual behaviors in organization such as workplace adaptation, job satisfaction, organizational learning and behavioral modeling, self-actualization and motivation, role perceptions, positive/negative reinforcement, workplace emotion, values and ethics, and work-related stress, etc. It also looks into changes in today’s occupation, labor market and the nature of work, and their impacts on people at workplace. While its interdisciplinary study helps students develop a holistic understanding of individuals

(2)Thecourseexaminesgroupbehaviorsandtreatsthemassocialandorganizationalconstructsratherthanasimplecompositeofactivitiesofseparateindividuals.TheOBsubjectstobecoveredincludeinterpersonalrelationship,inter-groupcoordination,socialperceptions,perceptualerrorsandtheirsociologicalandsocio-psychologicalcauses,groupthinkandgroupconflict,sociallyconstructedstereotypes,prejudicesanddiscrimination,etc.Teamworkdynamics,taskforceconceptsandskills,andtheirrespectivefunctionsarealsoanalyzed.Toincorporatethispartofthestudyinto(1),thecourseexposeshowgroupasasocialforcecanalsoimpactindividuals’motivation,learning,valuesandethics,andregulateorchangetheirbehaviors.

(3)Thecourseexploresfunctionalissuesoforganizationincludingleadership,communication,motivation,staffing,organizationalcultureandsynergy,powerandpolitics,conflictandnegotiation,structureanddesign,andorganizationaldevelopment,andchange.Thesocial-economic-cultural-politicalforcesandtheirimpactsonorganizationareexamined,suchasdiversityatworkplace,socialattributionandcategorization,demographicchanges,divisionoflabor,changesinthemainstreamculture,equity/equalityissuesatworkplace,governmentfunctions,changingeconomicstructureandglobalization,etc.Thecoursealsointroducesstrategiesandmethodsthatorganizationsdevelopbyfactoringimpactsoftheseforcesintotheequationoftoday’sorganizationalprocesses.Whilerevealingsimilaritiesoftheseprocesses,thecoursedemonstratessomedistinctionsbycomparingprivateandpublic,largeandsmall,anddomesticandinternationalorganizations.

Throughavarietyofhands-onexercises,thecoursehelpsstudentsgaincomprehensiveknowledgeofOB,developcapabilitiesofanalyzingandsolvingvariousorganizationalissues,andbecomeeffectiveinachievingtheirindividualgoalsinanyorganizationprocessofwhichtheyarepart.

Specifically,studentsattheendofthetermareexpectedto:

Ø establishaknowledgebasewiththeoriesandconceptsinthefieldofOB,andbeabletoengageinbothacademicandpractioner’sanalysisofimportantsubjectmatters;

Ø developeducatedandprofessionalunderstandings(vs.theircommonsenses)ofcontemporaryorganizations,behavioralpatterns,andtheirimpactsonindividualsandgroups;

Ø becomecapableofidentifyingsocialforcesthatinteractwithtoday’sorganizations;Ø cultivateaholisticandmulticulturalmindsettowardsissuesoftoday’sorganizationandpeople

socializinginit;Ø acquireaskillsetofproblem-diagnosisandproblem-solvinginavarietyoforganizationalsettings;Ø increasetheirprofessionalabilityinusingeffectivemethodstoaccomplishorganizationaltasks,

CourseRequirements/KeyEvidencesThiscourserequiresstudentactivitiesinandoutofclass.Acombinationofstandardclassroommethods(lectureandgroupdiscussions)withadditionalapproacheswillbuildupstudents’professionalknowledgeandskills.

(1)Reading:Students’intensive(careful)readingconstitutesanimportantpartofthecourserequirements.Itincludesassignedchapters,cases,andselectedjournalpublications.Amajorpurposeoftests/examsexecuted,caseanalysesconducted,andprojectsundertakeninthisclassistoexaminetheoutcomesofstudents’readingefforts.Theemphasisisnotonthequantityofmaterialreadbutthecarewithwhichitisread.TheprofessorhasmanyyearsofexperienceteachinginChina,includingEnglish-languagefinanceclassesatDukeKunshanUniversity.Thequantityofmaterialwillprovetobechallengingbutnotunreasonable.

(2)CaseAnalysis:Studentswillbeassignedselectedcases,andeachstudentgroupisexpectedtoconductanalysesandprepareacasereportoutofclass.Thistrainingenhancesastudent’sabilitytoapplydisciplinaryconceptstoanalyzingpracticalissuesandsubjectmattersinthefieldofOB.Italsoservesasateamworkexercise,anexperimentoforganizationalprocesses,andanexperienceofgroupinteractions.Aworksheet(rubric)willbeprovidedforgroupmemberstoevaluateeachother’sparticipationandteamworkeffectiveness.Thisevaluationwillbeareferenceforinstructor’sfinalgrading.

(3)FinalProject:EachstudentgroupwillconductacomprehensiveresearchprojectonatopicofOB,andstudentsarerequiredtodemonstrationaneffectiveapplicationoftheknowledge,concepts,andmethodslearnedinthisclass.Thisassignmenttogetherwiththecaseanalysisintendstodevelopstudents’hands-on

capabilitiesasmanagementprofessionals.Aworksheet(rubric)willalsobeprovidedforteamworkevaluations.

(4)Documentaries:Theclassusesreal-casedocumentaries(similartocasestudiesbutinvideoformandusuallydepictingbriefepisodes)toillustrateconceptsandtheoriesofOB,andtofamiliarizestudentswithproblemsandissuesthatoftenposechallengestoorganizationsandmanagement.Classdiscussionswillbeheldandwrittenassignmentsgivenfollowingthesedocumentariesinclass.

(5)In-classexercises:Theclasswillassigntostudentsspecificcasesrelatedtotheconceptsandknowledgebeingcovered,andeachstudentgroupswilldiscussrelatedOBissues,diagnoseproblemsanddevelopsolutionplans.

(6)Presentations:Eachworkinggroupwillmakepresentationsforthecaseassignedandfinalprojectconducted.Theprojectpresentationwillbevideotapedandprofessionaletiquettesarerequired.Inadditiontoexchangingknowledgelearnedamongstudents,thistrainingimprovestheirskillsofcommunicationbyengagingtheminquestion-and-answerinteractionsfollowingeachpresentation.

(7)Quizzes:Twoquizzesgivenwillevaluatestudents’masteryofbasicknowledgeandconceptslearnedinthisclass.Eachwillcovercertaindesignatedchaptersandreadings.Theyserveasameanstocheckonstudents’readingcomprehensionandclassparticipation.Somequestionsarealsodesignedtosolicitstudents’criticalthinkingandintegrativeapplicationofknowledgeandconceptslearned.

(8)ClassParticipation:Theclassusesavarietyofinteractiveapproachestoengagestudentsinclassparticipation.Besidesaspontaneousquestions-and-answersformat,therewillbecaseanalysis,projectpresentationsandsubjectmatterdiscussionsthatbecomemeasurementforone’sin-classparticipation.Theoutcomeoftheseactivitieswillbeassessedinacomparativemanner.Onlythosewhoactivelyparticipateinactivitieswillgetfullcreditsforclassparticipation.

(9)ClassAttendance:Studentsarerequiredtoattendallclasses.Absencewithoutpre-arrangementwillleadtopointdeductionautomatically.Whileabsencesaregrantedfordealingwithemergencysituations,anyonewhohasmorethan2absenceswillhavehis/herfinalgradeloweredaccordingly.Morethan3absenceswillresultinthefailureofthisclass.

Thecourseaddressesdiversityandinterculturallearning(D&IL)notonlyasasocialissuebutalsoasageneralprinciplefororganizationandmanagementsuccesstoday.Alargepartofthecourseisdevotedtointensivestudiesoftheorganiationalissuesofdiversitywhosesocial-economic-cultural-demographicattributesaredifferentfromthoseonwhichthetraditionalmanagementtheories,principles,wisdom,approaches,oreven“commonsense”tenetswereestablished.Basedonthis“warm-up,”theclasswilldiscussissuesofperceptualjudgmentanderrors,raceandethnicity,genderandage,interpersonalandgroupconflicts,stereotypesandbiases,ethnocentrismanddiscrimination,etc.Theeducationdemonstratesthataneffectivemanagementofthesediversityissues,orthelackthereof,willgeneratesignificantorevendecisiveimpactsononorganization/managementissuessuchassynergy,cohesion,reinforcement,workplaceemotion,groupthinkandgroupconflict,communication,violenceintheworkplace,teamworkandmotivation,etc.InsteadoftreatingD&ILaspartofcontingencyissueoforganization,thecourseapproachesitasaprerequisiteformanagement/organizationsuccesstoday.Therefore,theawarenessthatthiscoursetriestodevelopisnotabouttoleranceoracceptanceofthedifferent.Ratheritisaboutrespecting,appreciating,andembracingdiversityasastrengthandacompetitiveadvantagefortoday’sorganization.Whetherincasestudiesorprojectundertakings,studentsareexpectedtodemonstratethattheyareabletoconsciouslyapproachissuesofD&IL.Inotherwords,theyaretrainedinthedirectionofbecomingmostconstructive,productiveandeffectiveorganizationalmembers,managererandforceswithcorrespondingD&ILskillsandoutlooks.
