Use glue at every joint in this project. Attach the support rails to the headboard legs with 1-1/4” pocket hole screws. The top board is flush with the top. The bottom of the bottom board is 51-1/2” from the top of the legs and the center board is centered. Make sure the pocket hole side of the board is inset 1-1/2””

from the front of the legs.

Nail and glue in the horizontal pieces. The top of the top row should be 4-1/4” from the top and the top of the bottom row

should be 16-1/4” from the top.

Assemble the headboard vertical slats with wood glue and 1-1/4” pocket hole screws. Make sure the 2 x 6 boards are flush with the back

faces of the 1 x 6 boards with the pocket holes. Then attach the entire panel to the assembly in step 1 making sure the pocket hole faces

are touching each other. You can add screws through the back if you want.

Attach the detail boards to the sides. Either predrill and screw these in with a couple 2-1/2” wood screws or nail them in with a couple long finish nails. Make sure to use glue. If you want a bolder look you could

also double up these pieces.

The top trim cap can be added now. Glue and nail it on from the top. The horizontal beam can also be added. This should

overhang the detail pieces by 1” on both sides. To make this look like a thicker beam a matching 1x’ block can be added to the detail piece where the beam overhangs.

The footboard is assembled the same way. Start with the horizontal

rails and the leg posts. The rails should be inset by 1-1/2” on the

pocket hole side as well. The lower rail is 32” from the top of the legs and the center rail is centered.

Layout your slats and assemble with glue and pocket hole screws the same way as in step 2. Do not add any pocket

holes between 3-1/2” and 14-1/4” from the top of the panels as it will be seen

on the inside of the bed. Attach the panel with glue, nails, and screws if you prefer to the assembly in step 6. Make sure the

pocket holes faces are touching.

Add your top and bottom front rail boards. The top of the top rial pieces are 4-1/4” from the top and the bottom rail pieces are flush with the bottom of the slats.

Add your side detail pieces. Again, double these up for a bolder look.

Glue and nail down the top cap board from the top. Add the

horizontal beam the same way you did on the headbaord.

Start assembly of the bed rails. Make sure you assemble these rails with the pocket holes on

the other side. Just glue and nail these on from the back side.

The spacing isn’t too critical with the interior boards but this model shows a 17” gap between the

orange and purple boards.

Stack the rest of the boards. Glue and nail these on as well.

Glue and nail on the top cap or use more pocket hole screws to secure it. Also add the slat rail. Predrill and

secure this with 2-1/2” wood screws.

Before you attach the rails to the headboard and footboard fill any nail holes, sand, and finish as you wish. Take the bed where it is going to be used and attach the rails. The bottom of the rails should match the bottom of the footboard

which is 4” off of the ground. Cut a couple scrap blocks of wood to hold the rails at the appropriate height when you attach them.

Cut the slat supports to the appropriate height. Predrill and screw one to the

center of each mattress slat.
