Millersville University Nursing Student Wins Student Loan Hero AwardFall 2017 Recipients: Matthew Blanke Lock Haven University, Physician Assistant (MHS)Matthew notes that the option to study at DUC is one of the reasons he chose to attend Lock Haven’s PA prorgram. Originally from New Jersey, Matthew says that he has fallen in love with central PA and plans to stay in the area upon graduation. He has spent several years working with the medically underserved population, and his goal is to continue this work as a fully fledged Physician Assistant upon gradutation in May 2019.

Lock Haven University Physician Assistant Student Mission TripThis March, Lock Haven Physician Assistant students embarked on a mission trip to Harmons, Jamaica, and they stayed there for one week to assist communities in need. The trip was hosted by the organization Won by One to Jamaica and Lock Haven University. Won by One is an organization that helps the small community of Hammons Valley in Jamaica. As stated on their website, www.wonbyonetojamaica.com/, their goal is to help the community by “working to meet the physical and spiritual needs of the people.” Won by One brings people from organizations including schools, churches, sports teams, and more from Jamaica and the United States. Founded in 1989, the organization assists members of the community by offering services such as: House Construction and Repair, Life Groups, School Visits, a Medical Clinic, Clarendon Infirmary Outreach, Intentional Interaction, and Economic Development.

Collin O’Neil, a Lock Haven University Physician Assistant student taking the program at Dixon University Center, was one of the students who participated in this mission trip. Once he applied to go and received approval, he and his fellow students raised funds to go on the trip, and students were asked to bring two full suitcases of donated items to share with the people in need in the area. During the trip, each day

Collin was involved with a variety of services including build-ing a house, which was dedicated to a family in Jamaica upon completion. The dedication included a ceremony in the family’s honor. When he and his fellow students were not helping build houses, they set up a clinic to give out fluoride treatments to kids, practiced physical exam skills, dispensed vitamins and supplements, and provided citizens access to over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol and Ibuprofen and various items that are not readily available to them.

Part of the mission trip included visiting elementary schools to interact with the children and to administer fluoride treat-ments. They also made visits to an infirmary inside a parish. He explained that the parishes in the community set up these infirmaries to take care of their underserved populations. Collin notes that the people in the community are very welcoming and appreciative of the assistance and services that the volun-teers provide. He found the trip to be quite rewarding and was excited to meet people in different types of communities

and cultures and to to help underserved residents.

Mariia Anosova is a graduate student in Millersville University’s Master of Science in Nursing - Family Nurse Practitioner program at Dixon University Center. Recently she was awarded with the Student Loan Hero Scholarship. Student Loan Hero is an organization that helps re-cent college graduates better understand their financial situation upon entering the workforce. Their goal is to empower young professionals by providing them with necessary tools including refinancing calculators and income-driven repayment plans. Mariia discovered the scholarship and found that the organization offered an opportunity to students who have experienced finan-cial struggles. She says she feels very fortunate to have received this award.

Upon completion of Millersville’s FNP program, Mariia’s goals are extensive. Mariia further explains, “one of them includes finding a position that would truly fulfill my desire to educate and empower patients, to change their lifestyles through simple non-pharmacological means. It is high time to turn healthcare from an expensive pill pushing machine to the source of long last-ing change in the lives of the people. Millersville University will help me to accomplish this goal through various clinical experiences and culture where critical thought, curiosity, and drive for academic excellence are highly valued.”

She notes that she is also interested in law, “I enjoy learning tremendously and have always had a passion for law. One of my other goals upon graduation is enrollment into a law school. A background in health care and knowledge of legal processes will allow me to make informed decisions and see the world through a different perspective. Finally, increased knowledge and financial stability upon graduation from the FNP program will allow me to establish a charitable organization in Ukraine, where I come from. As the medical system is extremely corrupted and outdated, there is an absolute need for quality medical care affordable to the citizens of the coun-try. With the skills and insight into my future profession I hope to gain from Millersville University, I could see myself coordinating efforts with Ukrainian healthcare providers in my city of Dnepr to implement better care strategies for a wide variety of patient populations.”

Mariia adds that the ability to attend the Millersville University, Master of Science in Nursing - Family Nurse Practitioner program at Dixon University Center has helped her accomplish her goals while also working full time. “The proximity of classes and accessibility of professors nourishes the hope that anything is achievable.” For more information about the Student Loan Hero Scholarship, and the award recipients, visit: https://studentloanhero.com/featured/meet-amazing-winners-spring-student-loan-hero-scholarship/. Congratulations Mariia!
