MOTTAINAI / A Journey inSearch of the Zero Waste Life

Virginia Aronson“Mottainai feels like sacrifice at first. Then it feels like the only way to live.”

Mottainai means waste. Popular with the Japanese forgenerations, mottainai (pronounced moe-tie-nye) is the Buddhistterm for essence. One can say mottainai and mean “wastenothing.” Or, if something appears wasteful, one might remark,“mottainai.”

A kind of modern day fairy tale, MOTTAINAI: A JOURNEY INSEARCH OF THE ZERO WASTE LIFE is the story of a young manwho has everything and feels nothing but frustration. Until hemeets an unusual stranger and learns how little we reallyneed - and why living differently is important for each of us,and for the planet.

A typical American Millennial, Greer Grassi stumbles on agrassroots movement to change the world. More interested inmaterial accumulation and boosting his bank account, he puts hislifestyle of comfort on hold after he falls for a charming activist. Towoo the girl, he takes a job at her nonprofit organization andembarks on the wacky but required training program in ruralJapan. There, he lives off the grid with a cranky guru who talkstrash and drinks too much. Yet, mottainai is the journey that willchange the young man’s outlook - and his life.

An ancient Japanese philosophy popularized worldwide by thelate African activist Wangari Maathai, mottainai is both anindividual consciousness and a global movement toward zerowaste. To support this important worldview, MOTTAINAI: AJOURNEY IN SEARCH OF THE ZERO WASTE LIFE provides anentertaining story, an allegory about what it takes for us to changeour comfortable, wasteful lifestyle in order to save our beautiful, beleaguered planet. Includes tips for cutting back on waste and helpfulresources/references.

Linguizismus

“Language” is not only a means of communication, but also an instrument of over- and subordination, of inclusion and exclusion. This problem dates back to a long tradition, namely (at least) the colonial period. In the colonial era not only physiognomic features such as the so-called “skin color” were used to legitimize the subjugation of humans. Linguistic differences have also been used to justify people’s superiority and inferiority - the technical term for excluding people from their languages is linguizism. The colonial era is long gone, but even today people are categorized and hierarchized with reference to differences between languages, dialects, sociolects, accents, and other linguistic features.

This anthology is based on two international Erasmus projects carried out in 2013 and 2014 in Vienna and Oldenburg. Lecturers and students dealt intensively with the problem of linguizism and analyzed the education systems of their countries under linguistic-critical perspectives. The anthology contains the results of these discussions in the form of articles on contemporary linguistic phenomena. Readers are offered a versatile impression of the phenomenon of linguizism, with which they can grasp and understand their own observations and experiences.

Nuclear Disasters

Nuclear power plant disasters threaten the entire planet. From so-called ‘developed’ Russia to Japan, USA to France; in the aftermath of an accident, thousands of people are deprived of their basic human right to health and subjected to lies and suppression of information. Workers of the nuclear powerplant, people who live in that region as well as in other parts of that country, residents of close countries and even consumers from distant places who have to buy the contaminated products; every single one of them is affected.

Nuclear Disasters: Chernobyl and Fukushima covers the impacts of accidents in these two nuclear power plants with more clarity since a reasonable amount of time has passed for data accuracy. Even a country as developed as Japan failed to take the first measure after a nuclear power plant accident, iodine tablet distribution, and it has already led to great consequences.

Did the Chernobyl experience serve as a lesson to Japan in Fukushima, a success-driven country and a firm believer in technology? In addition to this comparison, this book examines the importance of the tendencies of power holders, the effectiveness of the civil society, the politically organized structure of the medical community, the independence of scientists and the courage of journalists. There is a thin line between treason and devotion for one’s country and it is usually left to the discretion of governments. People harmed in both accidents do not need suppressed information or manipulated reports, research financed by the nuclear lobby or false hopes, but they need reliable information and support. After all, these are the taxpayers whose money is used to eliminate the effects of an accident which may take up to 300 years.

The type of the nuclear fallout, it’s half-life and its effects on plants, animals and ecosystem in general are at such a catastrophic level that even human-centered people have to take into account since radioactive particles contaminate the food cycle of humans. For those who are able to see the world from a different perspective though, the effects on blue butterflies, which already have a very short life, are also momentous. Apart from the lifetime of butterflies getting shorter or the length of their wings decreasing, mutations seen in new generations are highly worrisome for the future.

It is ironic to note that Japan, a country so dependent on technology and electricity, idled all of its nuclear power plants after the accident and has survived just well enough by restarting only five of them, despite the claims of the nuclear lobby that life would stop without nuclear energy. A significant lesson learned from all these accidents is that, just like the global climatechange, nuclear power plants concern an area larger than the jurisdiction of the state that they are built in, namely they concern every living organism on this planet. Therefore, all the people who will suffer from the negative effects have the right to resist nuclear energy regardless of whichever country a reactor is built in.

Solen KipozMainstream fashion system is experienced in an unsustainable loop with the global supply chain. It is an unsustainable system not only because of its effects on the environment and ecology, but also because of theunfair working conditions which put a social distance between the employer and the employees. This structure, which has greedy characteristics with its production and consumption rates, thanks to its ‘fast’ loop in global scale, is recreating a ‘throwaway’ consumption culture every day which causes a waste problem that cannot be solved by the linear production model. Together with this, the non-transparent global supply chain builds the modern slavery system in the third world countries by applying hard labor conditions and human rights violations.

The Slow Fashion movement, which is born as an alternative to this course, builds an ecological, sustainable and ethical sense of fashion for design, production and consumption relations. Slow Fashion promises a hope for the search of a more humane and ethical future, for the production of long-lasting, enduring, unique, and eco-friendly goods that have been made with care for local values and respect for craftwork. Slow Fashion promises these by also making the relationships between the designer, producer and consumer transparent. Hereby, ‘slowness’ passes beyond being just an ethical and activist approach which is critical to the mainstream fashion system, it also prepares a base for the circular and collaborative economic model that has a potential of challenging linear moving power balances. In this framework, the transparent and cooperative character of slowness is prioritizing the design process rather than the end product, and the ethics of the slow movement conjoins novelty, style and aesthetics that are intrinsic to fashion with social awareness and responsibility.

This book consists of eleven chapters which discuss the following issues within the critical ‘temporality’ of fashion, in the context of dialectics of speed and slowness and the socio-politics of slowness. These issues are the social justice system of fashion, the social and environmental effects of supply chain, the probability of creating a cyclical economic system rather than the linear cycle of production and consumption, the creative waste management strategies, the role of slowness in togetherness of design and artisanship, the responsible consumption understanding created by slowness as opposed to the illusion of hedonic sense of consumption and happiness, our emotional and sensual relationship with clothes, and the role of education for the creation of a sustainable fashion system.

In this book, authors from Turkey, Britain, Australia, USA, Sweden, and South Africa, who have a deep understanding of this subject, present the reflections of slow fashion from their own cultures. The book becomes even more colorful by the slow fashion examples from Turkey.
