INTRODUCTION

EVEN PAST FIFTY - SHANTA SHELKE

Even past fifty portrays a woman who fights the odds of life in the midst of all troubles and tribulations. She trifles with and negates all her acute problems and the horrifying realities of life.

ABOUT THE POET

Shanta shelke(1922-2002)

Born in pune, Maharashtra, is a poet , journalist, teacher, translator and composer. Her poems deal with the problems that Indian women face.

EVEN PAST FIFTY

She’s past fifty ;

yet she’s still

a little girl at heart,

for whom the house is a doll’s house,

and running the household

a childhood game.

She has travelled a long road; but her little feet

Are not yet fatigued.

Catastrophes to her

Are still like the evil spirits

In children’s stories

Whom she fights with blades

Of grass; wipes the sweat

From her brow; hits hard;

Sometimes wins, sometimes loses,

Her sword broken.

BRIEF SUMMARY

‘Even past fifty’ is a poem about a women who faces the hardships of life with a smiling face and a cheerful heart. She can be any middle/lower class woman in India whose life is nothing but an incessant toil, ceaseless struggle and tiresome journey. Yet she is not ready to admit defeat and she rises again smiling and singing to herself. Her house which demands a great deal of service and scarifies from her part, looks like a doll’s house for her. She continuous her fight with the catastrophes of life with a broken sword.
