Welcome to Denver!

Welcome to Denver and SCP/Division 12!!!Welcome to the Mile High State of Colorado and the wonderful city of Denver! On behalf of the leadership of the Society of Clinical Psychology (SCP; Division 12 of the American Psychological Association), I would like to wish you a memorable and rewarding time at the APA Convention and throughout your time in the “foothills” of the Rocky Mountains. This brochure presents the details of the SCP program, including sessions for our many sections. We have an amazing series of sessions scheduled, including both submitted presentations and a number of invited presentations (including Pat Areán, Dave Barlow, Lisa Brenner, Les Morey, Joe Ruzek, and Antonette Zeiss, Bob Zeiss).

I am very grateful for the amazing and tireless work of this year’s (two!) APA Convention Chairs: Dr. Claire Collie and Dr. Kristine Day. Along with a terrific planning committee, Claire and Kristine have put together a phenomenal program that we hope you enjoy. Presentations in this year’s program cover a broad array of significant and timely issues and developments, appropriately reflecting the diverse and impactful work of SCP members and throughout the field of clinical psychology.

I would also like to personally extend to you an invitation to our new SCP Social Networking Event and Awards Ceremony, which will be held on Friday, August 5, from 6:00-8:00 pm (Hyatt Regency Denver Hotel, Centennial Ballroom F), during which we will be featuring a Speed Mentoring event to kickoff a new SCP Mentorship Program. The Mentorship Program will be available to all SCP members and will cover a wide variety of topic areas related to clinical work and professional practice, research, administration, and policy. Please spread the word about the Social Networking Event and about the exciting new developments within SCP! We warmly welcome both members and non-members of SCP and hope to see many new faces at the event – and please come up and say hello! This event will also provide an opportunity to meet a number of wonderful leaders within clinical psychology who we will be honoring for their incredible work and impact to the field.

If you’re not currently a member of SCP, I hope that this year’s convention and exciting new and planned developments designed to provide significant membership value will encourage you to be part of the SCP community. If you are a member, I hope you will let others know that it is an exciting time to be part of SCP!

Best wishes for a wonderful convention. I hope you see you in Denver!

BradBRADLEY E. KARLIN, PH.D., ABPPPresident

Dear Society for Clinical Psychology Members,

We’d like to invite you to join your colleagues for what promises to be a very exciting APA Convention in Denver! We are thrilled that the SCP (Division 12) program has so much to offer this year for all SCP members. We have an extensive and diverse range of invited speakers and special sessions covering a wide range of topics including dissemination and implementa-tion, novel treatment approaches, translational research, ethics, meeting the needs of older adults, integrated care, and working with diverse populations. There are also sessions that may be of special interest for graduate students and early career psycholo-gists including sessions on mastering the internship and postdoc application process, licensure, promoting opportunities for leadership, boosting productivity in academic writing, and challenges for first year supervisors. The Division 12 program was created to offer diverse and broad opportunities to learn from experts and engage with your colleagues. We look forward to seeing you all in Denver!

Division 12 is proud to host twoFull-Day Pre-Convention Workshops

“Cognitive Therapy for Suicide Prevention”8:00 - 3:50pmGregory K. Brown, Ph.D. University of PennsylvaniaGovernors Square 11/Plaza Building Concourse Level

Cognitive therapy for suicide prevention (CT-SP) is a type of psychotherapy based primarily on the assumption that individuals who attempt suicide lack specific cognitive or behavioral skills for coping effectively with suicidal crises. CT-SP has been recognized as one of the few evidence-based psychotherapy interventions to reduce suicide risk. In a landmark, randomized controlled trial (Brown et al., 2005), high-risk patients who received CT-SP were 50% less likely to make a repeat suicide attempt than those who did not receive CT-SP. Despite this research, there are limited training opportunities in this approach. This intermediate workshop intends to fill the gap.

“Contemporary Problem-Solving Therapy: A Transdiagnostic Approach to Enhance Resilience”8:00 -3:50pmArthur M. NezuGovernor’s Square 12/Plaza Building Concourse Level

This intermediate workshop presents an updated version of problem-solving therapy (PST), an evidence-based intervention shown to be effective for a wide range of psychological disorders and problems, age groups, and diverse populations. In addition to learning the conceptual and empirical background of this approach, participants learn, via demonstrations and role plays, how to conduct PST as a means of fostering resilience and coping ability to overcome the negative effects of various types of stressors. The three populations of special focus for this workshop are depressed medical patients, recently returning veterans/military service members, and individuals at high risk for suicide.
