The funeral was for the father of a family, and I can remember saying in my brief homily that, “as you have lost your father, so I have lost my father just a few minutes ago.” John Paul became Pope when I was 17 years old, and most of my adult faith and vocation came through him. “Pope” comes from the Italian word “Papa,” and he was truly a father to many of us priests ordained in the last 25 years. Some generous friends paid for my trip to Rome in 2005 to attend his funeral, and clearly, oh so clearly, do I remember [then Cardinal] Joseph Ratzinger’s homily. The future Pope looked up at the previous Pope’s window (soon to be his own, though he did not know it) and said “We can be sure our beloved pope is standing today at the window of the father's house, that he sees us and blesses us. Bless us, Holy Father, from the window of the Father’s House.” I remember how empty Rome looked without the light on in his rooms overlooking St. Peter’s Square, even though 3 million people flooded in for the funeral. Today we expect another 3 million for his beatification. I will remember all of you at the Mass, and at the tombs of the martyrs here in Rome. A few years ago Mary Mullins and her daughter Caroline made our John Paul II stained-glass window, which is behind the choir. She wrote “Blessed John Paul II” on the window, but put a piece of white tape over the word “Blessed.” Next Sunday (May 8th) at the 10:30 Mass, I will joyously remove that white strip of tape, rejoicing to call our beloved Pope “blessed.” Blessed indeed to be safely in the Father’s House. Today we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday, the feast instituted by Pope John Paul II during the Jubilee Year 2000. Today is also the day that John Paul is beatified by the current Pope, Benedict XVI. I am in Rome today, attending the beatification with some parishioners, and with Fr. Sam West and his mother. We will return this Wednesday. Beatification of the Venerable Servant of God John Paul II, Sunday 01 May 2011

“1 May I shall have the joy of beatifying my beloved Predecessor, Venerable Pope John Paul II. The date chosen is deeply

meaningful: it will in fact be the Second Sunday of Easter, which he himself entitled Divine Mercy Sunday, on the eve of which his

life on earth ended. Those who knew him, those who esteemed and loved him, cannot but rejoice with the Church in this event. We

Divine Mercy Sunday by Maria F. Delgado-Braun Today we celebrate the feast of Divine Mercy, instituted by Pope John Paul II on May 5, 2000 in response to the command given by Jesus to St. Faustina. During this Second Sunday of Easter, we receive special graces stemming from the bountiful mercy of God. St. Faustina recorded in a series of four diaries the words that Jesus spoke to her about His mercy. “I desire trust from My creatures. Encourage souls to place great trust in My fathomless mercy. Let the weak, sinful soul have no fear to approach Me, for even if it had more sins than there are grains of sand in the world, all would be drowned in the immeasurable depths of My mercy.” (Diary of St. Faustina, #1059) Jesus Christ is the revelation of the Father’s love for us, it is in Him that the invisible nature of God becomes visible. Christ brings the meaning of mercy through His teaching, and most of all, “He Himself makes it (mercy) incarnate and personifies it.”(Dives in Misericordia, #2) The Paschal Mystery shows us the love and mercy of a God that humbles Himself to die and bear our sins so we can be redeemed and brought into eternal life. To believe in God’s mercy is to believe in His love for us. Jesus said to St. Faustina, “I want to grant a complete pardon to the souls that will go to confession and receive Holy Communion on the Feast of My mercy (8 days before or after)” (Diary, 1109). Jesus told St. Faustina to commission a painting of Him, with promises attached to all who venerate it. The image shows Him with rays of red (blood) and white light (water) stemming from His heart pierced by a lance on the Cross, with the words “Jesus I trust in You,” inscribed below. On this Sunday, the soul that approaches His mercy receives Confession and Holy Communion, “shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment.” (Diary 999). Jesus I trust in You!

Faith & Finances with Phil Lenahan-Divine Mercy and Being a Steward of Providence Today we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday, which Pope Benedict has chosen as the day of Pope John Paul II’s beatification. John Paul II’s writings have been an impor-tant part of my faith journey. I vividly recall the time of his passing on the eve of this feast day. I’m not a person easily brought to tears, but they flowed during the cover-age of his funeral, not unlike they did for my father at his funeral. I remember being surprised by the strength of those feelings. When I shared that experience with a friend, he told me that I had lost a “spiritual” father. He was right. Divine Mercy Sunday is a great gift. It’s a reminder of God’s plan of salvation, a call to conversion. The Catechism says, “To do its work grace must uncover sin so as to convert our hearts and bestow on us ‘righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ’”(1848). These are keys to fulfilling your role as a steward of Providence. While sin causes us to have misguided financial priorities, grace moves us to properly use the resources God has entrusted to us: we grow our talents and put them to good use; live within our means; are a generous people; save prudently to meet future responsibilities; avoid unproductive debt; spend on things that make an eternal difference; and grow in unity in our marriages. A steward of Providence gratefully accepts God’s Mercy, applies it, and shares it with others. God love you! —Call Nickie Miranda (526-4704)

Tim and Janice Keating

Profiles in Stewardship by Tammy Menezes

Tim and Janice Keating have always “Responded to God’s Blessings” by giving back to him their very best. Janice’s father, the late Norm Boucher, always understood this need to give back and Pat Boucher and family continue this tradition. Tim is a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and has helped to lead many of their efforts over the years. While many of us were home, preparing for Easter Sunday, Tim and family were busy preparing a meal for our St. Joseph’s Catechumens on Holy Saturday after they were welcomed into the Church. Tim was also instrumental in our parking lot construction process and offered his professional experience serving on our Building Committee. Janice has followed the family tradition by offering her gifts of Stewardship in many ways. Some include helping as a St. Joseph’s Bread volunteer, serving a leadership role on the Church for Tomorrow Campaign and currently serving as Vice-Chair of the Development Committee. She and Tim are committed to the mission of our church, and welcome you to consider offering your talents in some way. Join them both at our free parish breakfast on Saturday, May 21 as we all celebrate the many ways God has blessed us personally and through the good works at St. Joseph’s.
