Driving forces for biotic evolution

• “Press” (glacials) vs. “pulse” (tephra deposition) events can cause regime shifts

• Each ecosystem has different resilience/resistance strength

• Reservoir function: Evolutionary refugia assuring the survival of outside species

• Relatively stable environments allow accumulation of lineages due to reduced extinction rates (phyletic gradualism)
